Quantum Break Gamersyde preview. HQ gameplay inside.

The effects are truly mesmerizing; they must have been a nightmare to code!
I like the overall look despite the noticeable shortcuts, and I am eager to hear more impressions on how the story plays out -without being spoiled-...

Gorgeous lighting and effects. The character models are sometimes outstanding too.

For their next game I'd like to see Remedy really push their animation tech.

I'll probably watch a stream tonight.

I do feel like Remedy has really improved from Alan Wake to Quantum Break. I liked Alan Wake, but it became quite repetitive at points due to the very samey scenery. You were always making your way towards specific locales but the journey there was often very long and drawn out.

In comparison, based on what I've played, Quantum Break feels crafted with each area being carefully tuned for the player. Every combat scenario feels unique and these encounters are broken up by alternative gameplay bits or story beats. I never felt that same feeling I got from Alan Wake where it just drags on.

I would love to listen to a podcast with top Naughty Dog and Remedy guys talking about their respective games. The insight would be quite fascinating.
That sounds good. I had the exact same reaction to Alan Wake where it became a slog in the more extended sequences getting from A to B. Probably the biggest issue for me that left the game repetitive and robbed the narrative of pace and flow.

If QB is much better paced with good variety it sounds much more appealing.

It wasn't. You said you were sad that you can't play it on Xbox or PC. I agreed.

Oh sry for the misunderstanding.
Maybe i will grab it in a sale at some point if the port is good but i also don't want to support UWP games.

I'm hesitant to support UWP/W10 store. I feel like I got burned by Gears already so I may just go for the XB1 version.

It also seems that IQ on XB1 is not that bad for a 720p game, it is not ideal obviously but not as bad as i thought it would be.

I haven't played QB, but I feel the same just by looking at footage and reading impressions. AW didn't do much for me aside from the atmosphere and episode like style. I felt it was a step back from Max Payne when it came to gameplay. QB, however, feels like it's the proper evolution from MP. Hopefully the game is a success for them since they have put a lot of work on it, and it definitely shows.

Can you skip or disable the live action stuff?
I doubt they'd force you to sit through 20 minutes of TV every time you finish an act in-game.
Agreed. Some of the best, if not the best post processing effects I've ever seen, at least with respect to all the time shift effects and glitches.
Dark10x said the rest of the post-processing is very good as well, makes for a smooth 720p resolution akin to watching a Blu-ray movie.

Whilst I do think it looks really soft and a touch blurry, at least it doesn't have the harsh jaggies and pixel stepping or crawl that many other 720p games have. In that sense I do sort of see where he's coming from.

Remedy said:
Quantum Break’s 1080p output is a temporal reconstruction from four previous 720p 4xMSAA frames. This approach gets us high pixel quality in combination with complex shading and effects, allowing us to achieve a cinematic look. However, varying sample counts between passes and temporal upscaling makes talking about resolution, as it is traditionally understood, complicated in the case of Quantum Break. Since the start of “Quantum Break’s” development, the most important thing for Remedy and Microsoft has been delivering a compelling gaming experience with superior artistic quality. This is what Remedy is renowned for. We’re confident that we have achieved this, and can’t wait to hear what fans think on April 5 when they play the game.
Errr, sooooo 1280x1080p? Or 1920x720p? 640x1080p?
KZ SF was 960x1080p, right?

It's 720p, but the upscaling to 1080p (for the final output) is not straightforward, they use the previous frames to consturct the added pixels from upscaling.

Yeah. The distortions are so believable that it's difficult to imagine how they achieved it in post processing.

My most anticipated game of the year, it really has chances to become my game of this gen, after Alan Wake which was my favorite game of last gen...Keep it coming Remedy, and Alan Wake 2 announcement at E3

Is anyone who is pretty good at shooters have video of them playing the game? Most of the people playing this game play it pretty conservatively.

If you get Xbox ver you get the PC ver also for free.
Only with digital preorder*
To be clear, is pre-ordering the digital version of Quantum Break from Microsoft the only way to get all of the other content?

I've seen third-party vendors, such as Amazon, mention Alan Wake’s American Nightmare as a pre-order bonus and nothing else.

Also, has there ever been any official comment on why the pre-order bonuses don't apply to physical copies of the game?

The image quality is pretty impressive for '720p'. The games various effects are stellar too.

I'm finally coming round to this game. Hopefully the PC version is top notch.

I can't stand this anymore, why is it not April 5th yet? Just a couple of weeks left to wait and it's killing me, been waiting since it was announced :(.

Sooooooooooooo instead of letting the upscaler upscale the pixels with random, new information it upscales the pixels with old information, using real pixels?
Hmmmmmm, sounds interesting.

Even DF doesn't even know. Whatever the case it looks fantastic.

These temporal re-projection techniques REALLY muddy the waters when it comes to technical breakdowns.

It's the same reason Digital Foundry broke the news about the reprojection in Killzone: Shadow Fall 4 months after the game launched; they couldn't even really tell themselves.

Maybe this has been answered or the question's a bit out of the blue but has it been discussed if this game is going to be unskippable-cutscene-central like Max Payne 3?

It looks really cool and fun actually but don't want to get my hopes up if it's as obnoxious about its story as Max Payne 3.
You can skip every single cutscene in the game, no exception, they don't even hide loading with them, if you skip a cutscene while the next is loading, you just see a loading screen.

Ya. Reading it it seems if you move one pixel to the right the game can track that and basically recreate the same pixel now one over by knowing its movement, color, and so forth and though there is that calculation its still less than completely recreating a new one. Shadow used 2 samples and it looks like QB uses 4.
It is NOT without its issues though and QB has other effects and post processing going on as well and some are acting on that lower resolution data which seems to be the cause for a number of the issues people have noticed. It also seems to be a caveat mentioned in a couple articles of this. Pretty interesting idea regardless really.
That paper I posted a couple posts above covers it pretty well.

I was watching videos of this from my cell phone all day, and now that I'm finally seeing it on my HDTV I'm blown away. No game that I've ever seen looks as insane as this game does during gameplay. And the better the player, the more insane and next gen it all looks. It has that softness that people have referred to, sure, but it looks so damn good. It looks like a pre-rendered movie a lot of times. The combat, I mean let's be real, there's nothing out there right now that is comparable to this. It's not just another cover based third person shooter. It's something very different. If people were thinking that this was just, for example, gears of war cover based shooting with time powers, we see that the game, with someone who is actually skilled enough, is so much more, and I still get the feeling like we're just scratching the surface.

This is only the first act, so I can't wait to see what else Remedy has up their sleeves for this game as we get further along. Remedy are easily one of my all time favorite devs ever since the first Max Payne, right behind my favorite period, which is Hironobu Sakaguchi. Max Payne was the game that made me purchase my first ever pc upgrade, which was a geforce 3 ti500. April 5th can't get here fast enough.

Correct. Only from Microsoft.

Read Official Q&A

Remedy said:
For a limited time, anyone who pre-orders the digital version of “Quantum Break” for Xbox One through the Xbox Store will receive the Windows 10 version of the game for free, downloadable at the Windows Store via redemption code. The pre-order offer also applies for those who redeem a digital code purchased from participating retailers or from the Xbox One Special Edition Quantum Break Bundle by April 4th, 2016.

So I may be incorrect. It may be from participating retailers as well. I would check with the retailer to be sure. The only way that I did it was through Xbox Store just so I wouldn't have any issues.

I also did the same through the xbox store to be safe. That was a tough decision to make since I wanted a physical copy of this game, but I'd feel like an idiot passing up all that free stuff.

Really hope they get the PC codes out for the Xbox preorders on/before April 5th.

I know it says "the week of April 5th" but please Phil

so i just recently got an xbox and have been looking into this game this past week, it looks amazing (only sucks i got the xbox before getting this bundle... then again i was able to get it for $50) so my question is "Windows 10 code for the game is only for digital pre-orders correct?" I know alan wake and stuff come regardless (which i havent played and am looking forward to that)

Moving away from the special effects for a second I think one of the things people will really enjoy are the splits in the story.

Do you think that this gives motivation for replaying the game? How many difficulty settings are there? Thanks.

I am so excited for QB. It's one of those games that I can tell I'll love. It seems like it will get better and better as you learn to chain the powers together and really unleash hell. WOOOOHOOO

5 acts and 3 difficulty settings. Iif you care about the story you definitely should replay on other branches and collect story elements.

Nice! I was hoping for some variation on Easy, Normal, Hard, Very Hard, but this will do. I'll be playing the shit out of this either way.
