Batman v Superman Spoiler Thread: Don't believe everything you read, Son

I -really- liked how they ended the big fight between Batman and Superman. It's a really emotional thing that really just came up out of total coincidence, spanning back like 80 years. That was a real good touch.

You're kidding right.

Tell me you're kidding.

that dream sequence, i tell ya.

You know how spoilerphobia works round this way, though. Hell no you didn't spoil anyone with your quick-fast impressions post, but people are so scared that every possible moment of their pristine first-viewing could possibly be sullied that even the thought of you scuffing up their shoes like that has them kicking out like Triple H.

haha. indeed.

He's posted up on the spire of some building holding a rifle on his hip in one of the trailers.

I think the third trailer ends with him toting a gun, too.

In fact, I can't think of too many promotional pieces for this film that didn't feature him either holding a gun, or firing one.

So that emotional beat actually works, then! Good.

What about his death & the funeral? I know the music is trying to work overtime on it (you can hear it on the soundtrack) but does it actually come through? Or does the relatively reserved manner in which they've got Cavill playing Clark make it harder to feel like "no, not him! Not yet! No!" when he does what he has to do?

Also another reason why I hated that entire sequence.

Kryptonite grenade launcher and sniper that shoots tracking beacons

I'm going to wait for the context of the movie before criticizing Batman killing, even as someone pretty staunchly against the death penalty and the current American prison complex in general.

Self-defense, heat of the battle stuff doesn't get me, executions would.

Now if I watch the movie and feel that Batman could've approached a situation differently to minimize the possibility that there would be deaths, then that's something I will call out.

Yeah pretty much this. Though I don't like him using lethal munitions at all on his batmobile/wing. If people get killed while fighting (batman deflects a grenade, friendly fire from goons, etc) then ok that sucks but shit happens and it's not in Batman's control, if people surrender or you knock them unconscious and then kill them, then yeah I have an issue with that.

I felt like that all worked honestly. When he says his final things to Lois, makes his move towards Doomsday, his death, the dual funerals. I liked all that.

He certainly isn't executing people. He murders people in every movie. It's the same here. It's just the brutal nature of the character in this movie that has people questioning it. It's literally nothing.

Liked the death, funeral was ok. They took way too much time talking before Supes went to go finish it though, but that's just a movie thing.

Yes, I'm sure there are members of KGBeast's hit squad who die as a result of Batman's actions but people in here are talking like he's walking the streets executing perps in cold blood Punisher style. There is a sequence where he actively uses guns, but it's the Knightmare sequence which is a whole ball of crazy in and of itself.

There was a neat bit later in the movie I haven't seen anyone comment on. After the goon squad captures Ma Kent, there is a Killing Joke style scene where Lex throws a bunch of polariods at Supes showing her all tied up and in distress with "witch" written on her head, only unlike the Killing Joke there is no implications of rape or sexual assault/violence.

It's really starting to sound like the Knightmare was a cool concept that probably worked way better in Goyer's shithouse script, and the visuals of it were too appealing to let go, but could have gotten cut from this film with zero problem.

When did Batman kill people in TDK and Rises? (Actual question, I haven't seen either in a while.)

The Dark Knight: He tackles Harvey off the building, which kills him. There might be one or two others I'm not thinking of right now, but that's the big one.

The Dark Knight Rises: He kills the truck driver and Talia. Again, I think there's maybe one or two others.

That entire confrontation between the two was a highlight of the movie for me

Fuck it, let's just get to Booster Gold ripping out Blue Beetle's spine. If you wanna have a DGAF attitude when it comes to the core parts of these characters, you might as well go all the way.

I will say however that the concept of the Bat-Brand is decidedly not ok with me, and even if it's something the movie treats as not ok I will still have a problem with it.

OH and Snyder literally pulls some Inception/X-Men 3 bullshit at the end

I agree completely. I'm almost embarrassed to admit that even as someone who has been reading comics most of my life I never made that connection with the names. Affleck did a great job during that.

Yep, I don't think it can be said enough how good Eisenberg is as Lex. Although I'm still bummed by how he did Mercy.

Shut up Static!

It's such an obvious thing that it turning out like that is just perfect.

Mercy got hooooosed

My wife, who has never read a comic in her life, actually brought that to my attention the other day. She was watching the Walking Dead and I pointed out that Lauren Cohan plays Martha Wayne in BvS and she goes, "I thought Martha was Superman's mom?"

I went

It means fuck you!

Lois throws dirt on Superman's coffin, slow shot of the coffin, dirt starts to rise up a bit, BATMAN V SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE

In a dream world, where they didn't have to throw Batman's name into the title to sell tickets, this film would be called:

"The Man of Steel Returns"

All that Justice League / Darkseid / dream / Flash stuff is probably going way over the heads of the general audience. Into the realm of nonsense or "what in the hell was that!?" It nearly went over my head and I definitely know a lot more than the average person.

Here's a start, in order of general screentime:

Superman / Batman / Lex Luthor
Lois Lane
Alfred / Wonder Woman / KGBeast
Doomsday
Mercy Graves / Martha Kent / Perry White
Jonathan Kent (believe it or not) / Carrie Ferris
Flash / Cyborg / Aquaman /Silas Stone
Martha Wayne / Thomas Wayne / parademons
Steve Trevor (photo) / Zod (body)

edit: added some of them in based on tim 1138s list

Yeah the dream stuff felt shoehorned in there. I can only imagine how confusing it would be if you didn't know anything about comics. Like I didn't realize that the red thing was the flash or that the dream was a possible future. I was just sitting there like wtf just happened!?.

As a Supes fan this is sounding way better then MoS. Hope it doesnt feel too claustrophobic in a rush to expand the universe.

It's so funny... I'm a lifelong comic nerd too and I have NEVER made that connection until this movie... but the funny thing is it finally clicked for me while I was watching but before that moment actually happened.

I don't remember hearing any heartbeat at the end with the coffin. The dirt started to levitate though, for some reason. Didn't really get that. Does Superman make dirt fly? Is that a new power that he acquired in his brief time in Hell?

Remember the scene where the takes flight for the first time in MoS and the snow starts swirling around him?

In MoS the first time he flies the dirt and rocks and stuff around him start to levitate. So there's precedent.

We need a comic where all the black "Johns" form their own club. Steel, GL, Martian Manhunter... Cyborg tries to join and they just laugh. "Go away, Vic."
