That's because there was an enemy somewhere in the boss room. You can't light bonfires when that happens.

Is it fair to say that initial impressions are lukewarm to disappointing? Was going to jump in with the JPN PS4 version but not so sure after reading this thread.

Just won a 3-on-1 at the High Wall.

You run and jump. There's a hint on the ground near it.
To be fair everything there does look samey, the change in enemies depending on which direction you go in helps, not sure how well you can see the smokestacks from the ground.

I need to revisit that area. I was tired last night and didnt realise you could jump. I kept rolling when trying to jump so I'm obviously doing something stupid.
Even the environments are full of story if you pay close attention.. it's a lore whores wet dream for sure

Yes so far in my opinion, the second area is amazing despite looking a bit too Bloodborne-y. The main complaint i have so far is that the bosses are easy (i've beaten the tutorial, first and optional second).

The bosses (I've only beaten 2 so far) are KINDA easy. I've died 3-4 times tho but compared to The Old Hunters it's on the easier side.

Boss 6 will give you trouble, and it looks to get much worse from here on out.
It's not fair to compare the beginning of the base game to the arguably hardest DLC in the series.
I have no doubt that dlc will be OH hard.
also let's not forget that BB's base game wasn't that hard either.

Bruh... TOH was endgame based and by far the hardest part of its game. Dark Souls DLC are supposed to be harder than the base game. You can't just compare them

Even compared to the Bloodborne base game, the Cleric Beast was a challenge and Gascoigne tore me to shreds as the first 2 bosses. Whereas here i've beaten them all first go with no help.
I suppose i'm a lot more familiar with the Souls combat though..

I don't think that's fair to say at all. Aside from the apparently easy first couple of bosses, it looks like everyone's enjoying it and unless your expectations are entirely unreasonable, it should meet those too.
With early impressions like this thread, it's also good to keep in mind that people simply tend to mention the negatives far more often than the positives.

I just invaded someone and beat him/her
it's insane how much better matchmaking is in this game than BB
there was host and 2 with him and in few seconds two other sunbros came to help me out of nowhere
and then there was a purple phantom god knows which side he was on lol

you get cursed. Apparently to lift it you have to buy that 20k key and speak to a girl on the tower. I looked it up on a Japanese blog.

Bought the 20k key and at the top of the tower is
a key item and the "silky smooth" nest. Haven't seen any girl up there.

Game just threw me off telling me I was disconnected from the server. But I don't have an internet connection problem. Had to turn the game off and turn the game on again. Has anyone else had something like this happen?
That's what happens when From Software use dedicated servers over P2P.
Demon's Souls - Dedicated Servers - Super fast matchmaking.
Dark Souls - P2P - Didn't even work for months on consoles.
Bloodborne - P2P - Fuck this shit.
