Smaller/Faster processors that use less heat are a thing. PS4 tech is very old.
It's possible.
.
Yeah, but for how much money? And how big will this console be?

lol, define "Cheap"
Not at 4K you won't, maybe they are looking to have 1080p/60fps in all games upscaled on 4K tv's.
..in which case I hope your 4K tv has a decent upscaler in it.
it could potentially render at higher than 1080 and upscale to 4K. Double the power ups asked to 4K will look better than vanilla ps4 on 1080pThis has been my feeling all along. Rendering those games, with the amount of detail and at the framerate that PS4 games currently have, but in 4K, would take a LOT of power. Even high-end GPUs would have a hard time achieving this. I don't see it happening.
I'm puzzled at what this thing really is. Could be a 4K media box that plays 4K blu-rays and other 4K content, that also has a bit more power to make the UI and the overall experience more pleasant (think N3DS vs. 3DS).
If it were coming out end of 2017 then the 4K PS4 gaming thing would be a bit more plausible. This year I don't see it happening.
Why have they been talking to developers if it is not for gaming?
There's no more 'cycle launches'. There will probably be a new console every three years now with backwards and forwards compatability.
Why have they been talking to developers if it is not for gaming?
I saw that but I just can't bring myself to believe it. We are not going to be seeing a game console that can play games in native 4k in 2016, or 2017, there's no way.
That'd be fun in VR. lolNight Trap 4K incoming.
Would be hilarious if it's just a PS4 slim with 4K output for media.
I thought they had said the existing PS4 was already capable of 4K output for media (not games).
Yeah, I don't think the games would be native 4K.Fair point. I still think there was some miscommunication of the info.
It just doesn't seem realistic to me that there would be any hardware iteration of the significance of running 4K native games this early on. That's the part of the rumor that just gets my alarm ringing.
This will flop so bad for the general public, I will need some popcorn.
-4k apps/UI/store
-4K blu rays/media streaming
-Native 4K possible for indies and games similar in scope
-1080p/60fps target for AAA games with some sort of 4K upscaling solution
That's more than realistic for $400-$500 and i'd be all over it.

This whole piece was literally just speculation except one sentence confirming their own sources that this is real in some form.
Outside of that, no new information at all.
Im actually considering this idea as the most likely to make me upgrade - a cleaner way to get PSVR and a few extra USB ports (at the back) to boot would be usefulThe added cable nightmare that comes with PSVR has to be addressed for many people do even consider the paradigm.
If the PS4K is the same size as the existing PS4 (but doesn't require me to Intercept the HDMI cable to the little box, which requires additional cables to power and a front USB), I would absolutely buy it. Maybe it has a more powerful CPU and Southbridge, but nothing that de-legitimizes the current console.
Then, the non-VR but now-4K-capable model could become a slim model. It'll be a win win.

and those angry people will spend the rest of their lives angry if technological improvement makes them angry, even when that improvement will mean their existing technology will be supported for even longer...

Yeah, I don't think the games would be native 4K.
That would make zero sense.
People looking for 4K bluray will be buying this regardless if they are gamers or not.

I think you have been had by jeffrigby
Shuhei Yoshida said:"The PS4 supports 4K output, but only for photos and videos; not games. PS4 games do not work on 4K."
those that want hd-tv for 300 aren't in the markt for even considering 4k as of now...lol, define "Cheap"
If you ask me, all the latest talk about hardware upgrades is nothing more than moving pawns on a chess board atm. Like 've already said in the other thread:
NX is comming and both Sony + MS don't know what it will be and what impact it may have on the market. MS (in sandwich position) started the upgrade talk and Sony is now in a position where they are showing first signs that they are willing to react accordingly. Plus, they need a stronger machine asap to push VR more.
You are absolutely right, I don't see any of this increasing the overall console market. It just means more costs for devs, pubs and plattform holders. BUT, what I'm trying to say, if one of the three starts something like this, the others will have to follow. It's pretty much Poker time right now.
Yup. I would want one and I just bought a PS4 in November.-4k apps/UI/store

We better get a reasonable amount for trading in current PS4 toward the new one.
Sure, but I don't think that's what the question is usually about. If the console is capable of it, why not allow devs the option if their games are basic enough to be able to support it? I'm sure that there are lots of indie 2D titles that could benefit from this.
You say that as if there was a lot of excitement for 4k blu-rays.
