NX Controller Rumor [Up5: Original was fake, and thus this is too]

I mean, I could tolerate this as a handheld that plays Nintendo's phone games as well or something, but the console is going to need a "Pro" controller. I just feel this will be vastly worse than even the WiiU gamepad in all aspects but weight for how I play.

does it matter if it's a handheld or a console controller if it plays the same games?

Calling it now. 240p. /s

The main problem I can see with this is the different button placement. If each game has wildly different layouts it's going to take a very long time to get used to.

Also I don't mind this as the default controller as long as I have an alternative with physical buttons.
You have 2 pressable sticks and 2 shoulder buttons/wheels as the norm, the other touch inputs should be no worse than in mobile games which most people seem to figure out quickly.

Read the sentence again. I'm speaking of the hypothetical future.

Sorry I should have been more clear. I'm saying Nintendo didn't show this prototype, in the same was as they haven't shown a cradle. They have shown nothing.

This leak matches with patents very closely, those patents also detailed the use of controller shells. So if this is legit, the shells are likely to be too.

I think what causes grief is that if it's a handheld, you're gonna be staring at the screen anyways. That won't be an issue.

If it's a console controller, no matter if it's 4K120fps gaming, it means squat if you have to keep looking at your controller just to be sure of what tactile button you're pressing.

10k is just guessing and is very confident in his assumption but has no source.
which situation is more likely?

Even the first one probably covers more than it would in real life

True, and this was an issue that was realised with the WiiU

Sorry, I'm a little confused. Is the consensus we would customize the buttons or are the buttons set on the screen already?

How can you know there are no advantages? And the Wii U was crippled? If you want to suggest that it wasn't powerful enough for third parties, sure, but nothing about the touch screen on the controller "crippled" the console. (I generally agree that the concept didn't seem like a big value add, but that doesn't mean it was crippled.)

Because most things from the DS didn't work with the second screen being so far removed from the primary one. And the ergonomics also made any attempt of motion controls really awkward. It was like a crippled DS, plus a few other halfbaked features.
And this might theoretically go even further by doing digital buttons and removing screen space.

The fiscal meeting is may isn't it?

Edit: Whoops. April 27th. Ignore that post guys.

All will be revealed April I should say. Well, probably what the nx final name is, what it is, and when they will announce the date of its reveal. I don't believe Nintendo is returning to a press conference this year, they're gonna do an Xbox style reveal in May where they control the message and all the media is focused on them.

June will be a digital event at E3.

Figured this would be a good exercise. Made a quick UI animation concept:

LwdiSnM.gif

  • Contextual actions/buttons
  • Click down on left analog stick for weapon wheel
Hear it with sound for that extra OOMPH.

again, like the wii u, this just looks expensive for little gain. I don't see many looking at this and thinking "WOW LOOK AT THIS NEW AND INNOVATIVE WAY TO PLAY VIDEO GAMES I NEED THIS NINTENDO CONSOLE"

instead it'll be underpowered, lack third party support and sell less than the wii u as a result

if this is real, of course ;)

The hell is this guy?

Here is our NX Timeline

President says they wont talk NX till after the Fiscal year starts.

So Anywhere between April 1st till E3 basically

They set the 2016-17 Financial Meeting for April 27th

ANYTIME in this window we could get an NX blowout

Thats it... thats all thats confirmed

Honestly I'm just curious if that BGE2 and P4 are gonna be NX games or not.
I'm curious.
My opinions of the controller is it looks mature but rather uncomfortable.

Could be either or at this point. Devs could open up the possibility of dragging their action buttons around on the controller's screen, or the tactile buttons are consistently set in stone, and are only raised for however many are needed.

I (have a small, but still realistic) fear though we could see a possibility of overzealous developers cramming in as many action buttons as they can, and we might as well be reading braille when trying to play our games.

Its somewhat similar to how MH3U and 4U implemented the touchscreen as "additional" buttons, and had a virtual D-Pad for camera control that was movable, and resizable. I got used to using the D-Pad, but having to keep track of multiple buttons without a tactile sensation from a standard controller seems like it'd be a problem. Being able to feel the button gives me a sense of reassurance that I am going to be pressing the right button.
Yep. Monster Hunter 4U is a perfect example, because it wasn't just buttons that you could add to the bottom screen. There was an extra D-pad (which could be resized and repositioned), a minimap, a player display, a lock-on button, and all sorts of stuff like that.

Honestly, the 3DS feels like the pinnacle of the DS design. I am satisfied with it and a third clamshell system wouldn't really grab my attention. I'm ready for a new handheld design, especially after watching the Vita get jettisoned.

Bring on the customizable UI.

The majority of people would say that its the Nintendo games that sell consoles. If they don't have a strong enough catalogue to sell a traditional console, is just having a gimmick filled one really the answer.

I'd rather have gimmicks with some ingenious gems in between and danger of other failed concepts. The Wii and Wii U (especialy asynchronous games in Nintendoland) provided some of the very best local multiplayer fun we've had on consoles with friends. I can't say the same for any traditional console since the N64.

So yes, I'm all for "gimmicks" in favor of traditional qualities and features. Nobody else seems to do them quiet as boldly as Nintendo. I'll get all the traditional features and qualities from other platforms with more money to throw at them and less half hearted third party support.

Have we discussed the HDMI cable?

Could it be connected to the controller? What does the string on the connector say?
Is this some Asian charset?

Uhhhh

And despite that they had to create the CPP and put a Nub an New 3DS. If thats not a passive acknowledgment that adoption of these changes is "mixed" then I dont know what is

I would have traded that second screen stuff for something better in a heartbeat

You're just reminding me that this puts them back in "extra work for a Nintendo port" territory again.

But developers could (And many did) completely ignore the touch screen. It was an unnecessary add-on at worst. It didn't cripple anything. If your suggestion is that the Wii U was intended to be a better DS, which I don't personally think is the case, I'll agree with you that it's a failure on that front.

But if part of what you're suggesting then is that the screen is too far removed, this sort of mock up would effectively fix that problem by putting the screen right at your fingertips. So why would it be more crippled?

As for the motion controls, I'd argue pretty much anything but gyro for any standard dual-stick controller is a total miss. (Wiimotes at least had pointer control down.) But the gamepad used gryo extremely well, perhaps better than any other controller up to this point. Unfortunately, it was rarely implemented.

Also why do people keep bringing up mobile games? Who looks at the gamepad while playing?

We have to look at our phones because the screens are on it. This is supposed to be the controller! It makes no sense to do this. On the Wii U if was ok I guess as a map and inventory screen but at least it had buttons for when you're looking at the TV.

Sorry Haptic feedback is not good enough to replace buttons yet.

Nintendo is crazy but they are no this crazy, they like buttons. Fake until proven otherwise.
