Dear Nintendo, The mobile market expects $1 or free experiences, good luck. Outside of japan nobody wants to play mobile games at home, or carry a second device when travelling, good luck. The feeling you keep fighting wars that ended years ago over and over again. Mobile and tablets and nostalgia, good grief please stop.

But you still can have 2 devices and have the user experience he is mentioning.

Such A shame because I really think this is where Nintendo has a real shot at being different. Sony and MS have no real power in the handheld market, so Nintendo could leverage their power in the handheld market to also revitalize their dying home console market, if they went the hybrid route.

I am still interested to see which direction they will take but I am still on the fence after being burnt on the Wii-U.
 
This thing will sell bazillions if it is in fact:
- the NX handheld device, not the main controller for the NX console,
- but can also be used as a controller for the console (off-tv play, Wii-U backwards-compability, etc.),
- it can run Android games (+ exclusive ones specifically made for the handheld obviously),
- has at least as much graphical prowess as current phones like the Galaxy S7,
- and is around the 200-250$ mark.

What are the chances of this being possible?

You could do the same. I clearly said that I can reach all around the device, no discomfort.

Plus you don't hold the device in the palm of you hand. You hold is against base of you fingers with your index fingers wrapped around the top, especially on a device like that where there are should buttons/scroll wheels. With a square device pressure is on the balls of your hand. With an oval devices like this though the edge of the device is focused lower into your palm, or at the very least to a smaller area. That's uncomfortable. It doesn't distribute the pressure on the device evenly.

Extra mile? To include a touch UI? Those tools are mainly drag and drop. We don't know how easy or hard the porting procedure would be. If Nintendo wants to succeed, we would need a PC architecture like PS4. Seeing that PS4 moved away from the cell chip found in PS3, development has been staggeringly high in comparison.

Whole device (ellipse area), since we just have dimensions for height and width.
For the actual usable screen area we still need to subtract the holes for the sticks and the bit at the bottom - it should probably put it around 90 cm^2.

There is no way this is simply a controller for a console... no fucking way. It MUST also be an on-the-go handheld device, or THE handheld device. Regardless of what that person said.

Above would be Handheld-mode, while TV-mode wouldn't display the game video but instead would use larger easier-to-hit buttons and display some other data in the middle.
 
I haven't read the entire thread but I saw someone float the idea yesterday the the physical buttons are on the back and that got me thinking, is it possible that the on-screen buttons in the first leak are just prompts to indicate what the theoretical rear buttons do? If you look at the placement they'd be awfully difficult to touch while using the sticks, even if you were looking at the controller screen.
 
Having only read through the first 3 pages of this thread full of everyones whining and moaning, why don't we all wait until Nintendo unveils it before declaring its death. This reaction is exactly why NDAs exist. I love the juicy leaks as much as anyone, but I will not sit here and jump to maniacal conclusions until Nintendo themselves does their official announcements. Give them a damn chance first, guys.

ios devices don't have $40-60 games being made for them regularly using shoulder buttons and analog sticks. if there's haptic feedback in there too, there's probably even more options. i don't think that after 12 years on, we're out of ideas when it comes to games using a touch screen, especially when you change things around like that.

It's not like Nintendo has given any confidence that they are learning anything recently. The last time they've spoken to the public, they made themselves look stubborn and delusional once again. By doing a straight follow up to one of the currently most hated Nintendo games, Sticker Star. Doing a finebros-esque damage control video to make Metroidfans look stupid (could have simply scratched ,,Metroid" from Federation Force instead). Trying to rip people off with a new Virtual Console service yet again, despite finally offering ,,accounts". Believing the laughing stock Project Guard is actually worth being a separate product, instead of being completely tied to the already poor looking Starfox.

All that would actually make me believe that they'd stubbornly continue the second screen concept despite its obvious failure and rejection in the market. But then it also wouldn't be a stretch to think it's gonna be as dumb as it looks.

Completely agree. And if you don't like this NX Controller when it's officially revealed there will be a follow up video showing why you actually really like it and are wrong.

No, please no more of this shit from Nintendo. I have enough controllers and extra bits. As much as I despise the gamepad, it's one item, no extras need to be attached. I don't what the whole Wiimote, nunchuck, classic controller situation again. PLEASE.

This just begs the question as to why the iris shaped form factor and fancy non-rhomboid screen though; much of the possibilities I can envisage with this setup are arguably done better and cheaper with a regular screen and bezel.

e: I mean... that straight up is a WiiU GamePad v2.

Agreed. Also, no Sensor Bar. If you have one, do something other than have 3 miles of cable strapped onto it.

Yea I didn't get any of that from the last direct.

I seen a new Paper Mario game with next to no info on how any of the systems work followed by people raging over speculation that it could be even remotely like another Paper Mario game.

A fairly common developer diary style video where the game was explained and fleshed out. If you took that as a personal attack to "make fans looks stupid" that's on you not Nintendo and says a bit about your state of mind

Some virtual console stuff I'm interested in.

And a much better looking starfox game with a cool pack in.

Congrats on the big hands.

Otherwise I don't see how you can reach all over the screen of One Plus One 5.5 inch and Nexus 9 inch just with your thumbs while holding them with your index fingers wrapped around the top.

Edit: without absolutely no pressure from the lower corners.

Would it? I'm not sure. There are two console manufacturers + the PC out there covering the "traditional" market. All of these platforms provide exclusive traditional experiences already. What would Nintendo bring to that market other than just one more platform to port to with an audience possibly less focused on those "traditional" games?

I'd say let them try what they want and possibly fail. We've got plenty of traditional already.

In a world where Nintendo is in touch with the outside world 100%... in real life 0% unless someone in Nintendo is strong enough to bring this idea to the wolrd by itself.

maybe the elliptical way is more comfy. I found it comfy when i tried it using my mouse, which is elliptical on one side.

Edit: To add a bit more, this plastic peripheral nonsense just shows a lack of clear vision in what they want to get out of their new device.

I think the problem I have with the design is just...it cuts off the corners of the screen for some rounded effect.

Now...MAYBE the entire console is that...thing with an HDMI dongle that goes into your TV, but that'd go against their talk of it being a hybrid device.

The majority of people would say that its the Nintendo games that sell consoles. If they don't have a strong enough catalogue to sell a traditional console, is just having a gimmick filled one really the answer.

The Wii was a massive stroke of genius and Nintendo did amazingly well with it. The Wii U...nowhere near as much success. Can Nintendo do it again? The market seems to be shifting all its hype engine into VR, so unless Nintendo pulls something amazing out of the bag, I cannot see what direction make sense for them.

Assuming it was a handheld, it could possibly cost $250-300 and include the recent Snapdragon 820 (which I believe is rumored to cost around $70).
I doubt Nintendo would allow other Android games to run though.
 
Waking up and looking at this again, such a large gamble on a different controller. There's things I like, there's things I don't like. Nintendo got a LOT of work cut out for themselves this year lol.
