Superman did not have the option to take the fight elsewhere, the kryptonians were engaging earth forces in the Kansas fight and abandoning them means they all died, whether or not he succeeds in luring Zod personally to a wasteland somewhere. That's also the fight prior to them discovering that the Codex isn't anywhere near Kansas, and they may well have turned the city upside down looking for it. In the metropolis fight at the end he can't go anywhere because Zod's motivation at that point is the cause as much destruction and death as possible out of spite for losing the world engine, not to pursue or capture Kal.

Pa Kent is probably the most singularly controversial story decision of the film. He was a sacrificial lamb to a plot point, that humans weren't ready. The movie shows he was wrong, but I don't see why that makes it dum that he believed in his own opinion with conviction. He thought he was protecting his son. You could make a nitpicky case that if he zoomed in and out fast enough nobody would recognize him, possibly true, and I'll call that a failure to justify it correctly in mechanical terms. The overall character decision I don't think was problematic though.

Zod wants to terraform the earth to make it the same physiology as Krypton because his purpose in life was to safeguard Krypton and apparently he's interpreted that to mean recreating it is the next best thing. He does not value the life of the humans, nor does his band of followers place much value in such things. Faora says lack of morality makes them stronger, but really that was a stupid line of dialogue because they do have a morality, it just isn't a moral system that values humans.



The movie was on the dark end of superman stories (not the darkest by comic standards, but the darkest of the films thus far since everything prior was at the extremely light and fluffy end), but in an absolute sense was not particularly dark. It had fewer quips than most of the marvel films but tragic childhood loss, alien attack causes lots of damage, hero saves the day is a standard comic book type story.

Reading your response I'm starting to realize that the biggest problem that I had with MoS was the basis of the new universe in its entirety. I found the subject matter entirely too depressing and horrific for a Superman origin film and I think even in a Batman film it would have felt jarring. Much of the carnage in the film is necessary based on the context of the story but just felt out of place in Superman's universe. The ending cataclysm was so similar to the end of Watchmen but in that film it felt thematically fitting.

I had hopes when the initial trailers hit for BvS that they were going to recognize and deal with the ramifications of taking MoS in such a dark direction but instead it sounds like they doubled down on it. I'm still hyped to see Suicide Squad later this year but man, I'm ready for another DC reboot already.

I foresee that being the case for pretty much all the DC movies. These are going to be a way for critics to get off on poo pooing superhero movies the way you know they really want to. It's just so obvious looking at those RT comparisons with movies that did better rating wise and you can just feel the haterade. Like MoS no its not going to be a great movie, but give me a break treating it like its cancer incarnate.

Its all about expectations.

Imagine if you paid for MJ and he he scored 21 pts per game for a season.

Is it bad? Hell no. It would throw him in the top 20 scores for the year, but you don't expect MJ to score 21 pts a game. You expect him to average 30 which puts him at 1 or 2 in the league.

Their expectations are for this film, combining two of the biggest super heroes and probably the two most successful ones into one film should be pulling Avengers numbers. Making 500million less is a disappointment.

He's kinda awful in Immortals.

People like to pretend he isn't bad in Man from UNCLE, but he's still a bit poor and does not a good job at transmitting charisma and charm, and his character there is supposed to be Mr. Charm.

He's a stiff in MoS and in this movie.

I'm gonna call it. He's just too milquetoast. He exudes averageness, if not outright suckery.

He seems to be a good guy during interviews, but audiences don't even laugh when he tries to be cute LOL.

Yeah, I think that too. He is awful in Cold Light of Day. Spot on with the audience reactions, seen him on talk shows and he still doesn't have it there.

Hmm...not really. The only reason you didn't see this type of destruction in previous Superman movies was the lack of CG and computer technology.

It's Superman's response to the destruction that ultimately confused and alienated people. The real Superman would have felt guilty, weeped, exiled himself off the planet, possibly committed suicide at the thought of him causing so many deaths.

In MOS? Nah...just another Monday.

No, it's not, the movie had thousands of user scores before it even opened. That viewer % is way tainted at this point and has continued to fall throughout the day. It was like 95% this morning.

I got into a lot of arguments with folks when MoS came out, mostly about the general lack of concern about what was happening to the world from everyone, including Supes. I haven't read Superman comics since I was a kid but I just never remembered it being like that. Maybe Snyder is keeping it real?
