This movie ain't better than Thor 2.

Thor 2 is better than Batman vs Superman.

Thor 2 didn't make my jaw drop at the amount of life lost due to one of the main heroes.
 
Honestly, saying this is on par with Iron Man 2 or Thor 2 is an undeserved compliment. Hell, even TASM2 had scenes that formed a storyline that a viewer could conveivably follow from start to finish.

This is in the same league as Fantastic Four. An absolute disaster unfolding on screen as you watch helplessly. But unlike that film, nobody tried to hide this. WB, and everyone involved absolutely thought this was exactly what America wanted.

I made it about 30 minutes before I stopped. I remembered how much I didn't care about Natalie Portman's character the way they shoehorned her into the plot was just awful. I lost interest earlier, but felt the need to push through so I could watch AoU. Couldn't do it.

You know, one of the things the film did semi-effectively was recap the important bits from that movie, as the cost of a really choppy opening half hour. I'm pretty familiar with it thanks to GAF OT so that helped as well.

What I'm saying is, fuck no. :p

Currently TASM2 is my most hated comic book movie. Not for how bad it was, though damn it was horrific, but for how nonsensical it was and irrationally upset it made me that they fucked up a Spider-Man movie THAT BAD

Luckily if BvS is on par with that I don't have an emotional connection to them like I do Spider-Man, so it's not going to hurt me as a person this time. But if you're saying TASM2 is BETTER than BvS then that is just damning

Definitely still going to see it, though. It's already on my calendar

Just got out of this movie.


My god it is so bad. And I don't even dislike Man of Steel and defended it on several occasions - I just thought it was paced horribly and had scenes that didn't make sense. BVS is a whole different monster.

Spoilers below:

The Good:
1. Affleck is a fine Batman; I'm not a fan of an older Batman in the beginnings of the Justice League but he was serviceable. His fight against the gangsters is awesome but you've literally seen all 90% of it in the trailer. Him killing with no second thought is a bit jarring.
2. Jeremy Irons was good as Alfred, his banter with Bruce is good.
3. Gal Gadot's Wonder Woman was good, better that she was used sparingly so you appreciate her.

The Oh God So Bad:
1. Where to start? Superman is wooden as HELL. He literally has two facial expressions on the entire movie - a scowl or a sad face. There is not a glimpse of him being a symbol of hope that there was at least some potential he could be in Man of Steel.
2. Jessie Eisenberg as Lex. Fire the guy who cast this. I work at a tech firm in SF and Lex is basically the super eccentric guy who gets on everyone's nerves at the office. He is never really menacing and his plan makes no sense.
3. The editing and scene transitions. This may be the worst thing in the movie. Scenes are not interconnected at all and happen at random. You never get enough time to care about any of the characters because the scenes are just 5 minute intervals and keep switching off at random. SO many scenes are useless and could have been cut.
4. The dream sequences. There's a lot. They add literally nothing to the film. That Knightmare scene? It should have been completely cut. Actually there is a TON of crap in this movie that is only there for Snyder to film something that looks like an iconic comic book panel, but none of these shots have the impact of the comic because they are just randomly put together without the context. Example: Supes flies Doomsday into the sky and the government decides to nuke them - which leads to no damage at all to Doomsday, no contribution to the plot, and only serves to film Superman in the TWD walker form he has in TDKR for a few seconds.
5. The plot. There is none. Well theres like 5 but none of them lead anywhere.
6. The Justice League cameos. They're just randomly thrown there with no plot significance. Future Flash pops up in front of Bruce and he looks like a Power Ranger. Thank the heavens we have Grant Gustin in the TV universe.
7. The length. It is SO long. I actually dozed off and got mad in the first hour and a half. The title fight doesn't start until maybe the 3rd-4th act and its over in 4 minutes (you've already seen most of it in the trailer). The fight also starts and ends in the dumbest possible way. They have 0 reason to fight.
8. The overdramatic music and script. The music is like, too intense and epic for the scenes and it took me out of it. Every scene is trying hard to be poetic and iconic but they're just thrown in there, it makes for horrible dialogue.
9. Doomsday is not interesting in the least bit and could have been completely cut. So yeah I guess he is more comic accurate than I thought.

This is a movie made by a mindless DC fanboy for mindless DC fanboys. If you appreciate good story telling and a coherent plot, stay the fuck away. I can only see someone liking this on a superficial level if they enjoy the battles in the 3rd and 4th act (which have no gravitas since you do not give a single fuck about anyone in the movie).

It is maddening that a movie like this can be created in 2016. I honestly think X3 and the 2000-era Fantastic Four movies are better than this. The Russos and Singer will have to save us for the rest of 2016 - at least they have proven that they are capable of greatness, whereas Snyder's movies have only been dogshit to mediocre.


Amazing Spider-Man 2 is better than this solely because of the Aunt May scene. They're actually super similar in a LOT of ways but at least the Aunt May scene actually makes you feel something, unlike this lifeless husk of a movie.

So, a few weeks ago I went to see Gods of Egypt, because while it looked astoundingly awful, I thought it would head into so bad it's, well, if not good then at least entertaining territory. And that it was - my daughter and I had a hoot at it.

These are the ways Gods of Egypt was a better film than Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice:

  • It had a semi-coherent narrative through line
  • Characters were allowed to feel a range of emotions, most notably, joy
  • Characters were allowed to look like they were having fun
  • It knew not to take itself too seriously
  • It had better romantic tension between the main couple. Mind you, the romance was awful.
  • The action was shot and edited in a way that you could tell what was going on, and where characters were in relation to one another.
  • The bad guy had clear motivation and goals
Gods of Egypt was the worst big budget movie I'd ever seen at the time, but it was entertaining in spite of itself, or perhaps because of itself. It's now the second worst.

More than anything, BvS: DoJ is utterly joyless. Everything progresses with funereal solemness, even when it's being silly. Everything is just so heavy handed. There's an early shot of Lex Luthor walking down a hallway from behind. It's brightly lit (which is rare), shot from a low angle, in slow motion, his lab coat flowing majestically behind him while loud, deep pounding music portends something Significant happening, though the film has had no time to build up to anything at this point. Nothing about that moment warranted the music, the slow motion, the elevation of a character walking somewhere to a major event. I burst out laughing at this scene - it was just so randomly awful. But it was one of the only times the film was so bad it was actually funny. For the most part, it's simply bad. And that's how most of the movie goes. I squirmed a lot.

Gal Gadot is the only actor allowed to look like she was enjoying herself, a bit, and her character is allowed to elevate her scenes simply with how she carries herself. She's got a deft touch, especially when Wonder Woman is doing her thing. She's the best thing about the movie, IMO. Affleck was good as Batman, and his rage and motivation was really the heart of the film. I'd love to see a stand alone Batman film with him, though with a different director. (Though of course, his Bruce Wayne was not allowed a smidgen of fun. At least Bale looked like he was enjoying himself.)

Two hours in, just when the movie has gotten its first lift of narrative momentum and we're heading into the climax, everything is literally put on hold to run a series of commercials for the future Justice League movie. Just right smack in the middle of things. At least Marvel knew to put their most overt hooks after the credits! It totally kills the forward momentum the movie had going.

The audience I watched it with didn't laugh, cheer or really react once through the film. Credits rolled and people got up and left in silence. The whole movie is a giant, joyless mess.

Good. So far, I can only amass a short list of comic book films I genuinely think are worse than Batman V Superman.

- Fantastic Four (As mentioned, a genuine disaster. Almost unfair to compare anything else to it)
- Kick-Ass 2 (Lower scale, but the drop in quality from 1-to-2 is unbelievable. Loses touch with every bit of heart. Terrible gross-out comedy. Baffling as to how it happened.)
- X-Men Origins: Wolverine (This one's on the fence. It has a competent structure, but possibly beats BvS in terms of bastardized characterizations. Stitched-mouth Deadpool... that's something else.)
 
I was actually ready to give this four stars until the last maybe quarter of the film. People said the first half was boring but I didn't feel that way at all. If anything it was let down primarily by having too much concentrated action and an unnecessary final fight which led to an unnecessary epilogue. If they'd dropped the final bits they could have lost 20 minutes of runtime and made the whole thing more brisk, or dedicated the extra time to fix earlier pacing issues.

3 stars after all was said and done, imo.

Certainly doesn't warrant the avalanche of sheer hate but it has many problems, notably one mentioned in the last few pages - its just so joyless.

I'm not one for quips continually or anything like that but its tone is so relenting po faced, at two hours 30min there's no way I have a desire to sit through this again.

This thing will have zero legs. Mandrake summed it with 'serviceable'

There was only one moment where the audience seemed to give a shit at my viewing.
Wonder Woman throwing up that X.
Complete silence the rest of the time. No laughing, no gasping, no awing, nothing.

A few people perked up at the Civil War trailer, too.
 
Agree with all your points, roflwaffles, the good and the bad.

About a half hour into the film I started playing a game: count the number of times characters have a conversation that has a beginning, middle and end. And I don't mean end as in the scene cuts away, or gets interrupted. But actually concludes in a way that two humans talking to each other might. There's plenty of dialogue - this isn't Mad Max - there's just no flow to it. People emote, spout, shout and quip. They don't really converse much. When they do the scenes cut away at odd times, making them feel incomplete.

I think I got up to one, but I've since forgotten which one it was.

Compares this to Thor 2 (yes, Thor 2) where my audience laughed at every joke and overall had a great time.
 
The second Thor not being good didn't really matter, i only caught a bit of it on TV, by then Marvel was in full flow and there was always the next one that can redeem it. I was more disappointed with AoU, but the second Cap movie made me think that they still know what they are doing. There is just so much more riding on BvS, you have to question the thinking behind the whole project. We will see it differently if Suicide Squad and the subsequent movies are good, but it is hard to put faith in them when they mishandle the biggest characters there are.
 
Before the movie started, there was a trailer for Lego Batman.

That looks like it's going to be a far better Batman movie than anything we'll get in the near future.

Hell, I wish anything in BvS was half as good as the Jimmy Kimmel BvS skit.

A lot of the criticism makes me think this is closer to Watchmen more than anything, but with a last third act that is your typical superhero movie explosion fest.
You liked Watchmen, so I think the first half will be right up my alley as well. Hopefully this means the director's cut will pull it more to the Watchmen side.
 
As a 9-to-5 loser who's only watched the trailers for this and doesn't have the insomnia needed to read a 200 page thread about fatman and the handsome guy, are these reviews surprising? I was under the impression that Man of steel was considered too poor to even be 12 hour flight viewing material and this looked worse than that from the get go.

One of the showings near me was sold out, and there was a huge line outside for the later showing I went to.

Of those people waiting in line, I remember three specific positive audience reactions (character spoiler and joke spoiler):

1. People cheered Wonder Woman when she appeared
2. People laughed at the newspaper guy wondering where Clark Kent is / Kansas joke
3. People laughed at the "friend of your son's" joke

I think there was some laughter at inappropriate parts. I think one or two of the
cut to black, "it was just a dream"
moments made people laugh. I started laughing at the slow motion walk when Batman was
near his family's grave
. The random horses might have made people laugh a couple times too.
