Star Citizen Alpha 2.0 | The 'Verse Awakens

I'm looking forward to seeing how they handle the agriculture domes on the Endeavor. Walking through one of those greenhouses and looking up to see the star you've positioned overhead should be quite a scene.

Pfft. How about looking out from the dome of one Endeavor to see another person looking out from the dome of another Endeavor stationed nearby as a Hull E cruises by in the distance with an escort screen and a star burns overhead. That's the potential of SC.

Well, assuming they ever get the instance capacity high enough to realistically support having that many big ships at once. =P

First time walking around the Starfarer and I couldn't find the cockpit or the tank platform.
I found a cool space blanket though!

Just realized there is an intake inside the housing of the rear landing skid. That's an awfully odd area to have one as that area should be sealed during normal operation. And speaking of sealing, hopefully the skids retract against the ship before it takes off. The downward blast from the engine is sure to have unintended consequences for those hoses and other exposed parts. It's not like they need to be extended after landing anyhow. Their only practical purpose is to act as a shock absorber.

I need to stop analyzing things.

I've got a Hull B. Should I upgrade to a Starfarer? Which carries more? The Starfarer can do general transport now right? Not just refueling...

Damnit GAF the Starfarer looks amazing. I just want all the ships. I can't justify it and I know it. But damn do I still want it.

It's probably a good thing it got the price increase, definitely helped to curb my desire.

The Starfarer is reported to hold 3321 versus the Hull B's 384. However, I don't know if that number also includes the fuel capacity on top of the cargo bay. It is a pretty large cargo bay though. Remember that the specs are always changing as well, just like with the Starfarer getting a size upgrade, so who knows how much any of the Hull ships will hold in the end. Upgrading is your call.

Edit: Nevermind there's variations of the Hull series that carry way more. This makes sense.

Mother of God I just watched a walk through of the Starfarer. That's the dream. That's the damn dream. I should have picked that up when it was still 195 instead of my Vanguard Sentinel.

There's no way the Starfarer will be able to carry nearly 10x that of a dedicated cargo ship. I think there will be alot of adjustments made as time goes on. There are other ships with oddly inflated or underinflated cargo numbers as well.

Yes, the Starfarer will carry that much more than a Hull B which is a small cargo ship. That number was factoring in both the bay and fuel tanks btw. The more direct comparison to the Starfarer would be the Hull C which are far closer.

Damnit I was caught. I thought I changed it before someone would comment lol. Yea I saw that. I didn't understand the Hull-B's sizing.

Haha, yeah, the Hull is an oddball ship as every variant is massively different in size. The Hull E could transport thousands of Hull A's lol.

Rendering and processing all these ships with their own physics grids. It's just insane and still blows my mind. The Starfarer feels larger than life... I can't imagine how big these other ships are going to be. I really need to watch more videos detailing their rendering techniques to understand how they compartmentalize the rendering as to not be too taxing.

If anyone knows of a video they've put out like that I would love to see it.

Actually if you watch the ship shape for the Starfarer you'll see how they divvy up the inside for culling. Outside it'd be mostly LoD.

Thinking about upgrading the Starfarer to a Hull E if they become available again, just for the sheer absurdity of it.

I'd keep a Starfarer over Hull C for the versatility.

Have a Hull D CCU in storage. That's big enough for me. The Hull E is just... cargo insanity. I can't imagine buying/mining/salvaging that much. Mind boggling really.

Just bought the game after not following it at all and knowing nothing about it other than what was on the first page of this thread. I don't have much time to play but I can't wait to dive in tonight.

That is great advice. Hull C and larger also can not land on ground and have to have a special loading service as they open up so big. One more cost to factor in.

That 10 for the Chairman episode was pretty good. https://youtu.be/zvm1jW_Xp_8

Nice to hear that they're so close on persistence. Having a working gameplay loop of earning "alpha UEC" and buying stuff will make it a lot easier to present as a playable game instead of a sandbox.

I tink I'll just revamp the OP and ask for a title edit when we get to that point instead of switching to a new thread.

Having a flyable Starfarer soon will be nice as well.

Thanks. I upgraded. :)

It's hard for me to look up this stuff on mobile so I appreciate the post.

Oh man I want the Starfarer. Badly. That price hike is something else though. That being said it does put me in easy upgrade range if I want to trade in my Vanguard Sentinel.

I currently have

Constellation Andromeda (Rear admiral) physical silver box edition (non LTI)
Sabre with LTI
Vanguard Sentinel with LTI

Should I give up my Vanguard for a Starfarer. I would trade the Connie but I'd lose the physical stuff which I think is kind of cool.

Debating whether to buy back my Gemini and trade it to you for the Sentinel. =P (Sentinel was on the roadmap to compliment the Warden, and already have another Gemini from getting the Idris.)

Edit: Actually, just remembered I have a dentist appointment coming up in early April with Xrays. Combined with setting aside the money for the Vive early due to that "processing" stage, I don't think that Gemini is getting bought back quite so soon.

I'm not sure I'd be willing to trade anything yet ;). I really do like the idea of my two seater Vanguard that's specialized for cyber warfare for me and my buddy. I'm trying to get my other friends interested in this as well. But I don't think it's for them which is why I'm iffy on grabbing a Starfarer.

I did originally get my Connie for that reason though.

I'm probably getting ahead of myself anyway. It's a compulsion. Just watching people run around that ship was amazing. I guess I'll have plenty to look forward to earning in game.

Haha, no problem. As my post edit pointed out, it wont really work out for me in the near term anyhow. That said, I already have a CCU to the Sentinel along with another Warden to buy back to create it from. My roadmap doesn't require anything that isn't readily acquirable at this point. =) The offer was just being extended as a potential value as the Gemeni will be even more expensive than the Starfarer.

I appreciate it. I think I need to go take a cold shower now. Watching videos of people walk around the Starfarer is killing me. Misc team does the best damn designs.

It is awesome I just hate view from cockpit. Same thing with freelancer. I will keep it as long as they do not put the jump for sale again. I will melt some ships for the Jump very quickly.

Cockpit, pfft. Pay somebody to fly it for you while you walk around the inside tinkering with things or step out on the cat walk for a view. ;)

Edit: Also, MISC cockpits in general are lackluster for view. The Hull and Endeavor don't look to be much better. The Reliant is the only one that looks like it has a nice view. But hey, they're workhorses, not combat or touring ships.

Yeah persistence and procedural quite soon, which means less than two months. Awesome.

I'm also counting on nice trailer of S42 on E3 PC conference :)

Oh man...dare to dream that we get S42 this year.

Persistence will be nice. Hopefully custom avatars finally.

I assume that this is a very difficult component for all MMOs, but I guess I take it for granted since...well, it's something that's in ALL mmos. The ability to make my character look like me. And not just by giving him new clothes (looking at you The Division).

I don't mind CIG taking forever to give us character customization, as it results in good customization. 12 set avatars with only clothes being the customizable option to differentiate the 12 models would be disappointing.

A little off topic: Finishing up Vector Prime...man, the Yuuzhan Vong are exactly what I envision the Vanduul to be. Minus the whole "dead to the force" thing.

Can't wait for S42.

Damn, is this worth a 30 gig download ._. I figured after playing around in Crusader enough when that first came out my next SC download would be when they redid the 300 series. But this is hard to resist =P

This will probably be your only chance for a while. The next few releases are going to be breaking the the Hangars somewhat.

This alpha seems to hate me. With a friend I made three attempts to play around in the "'verse" portion yesterday evening:

The first time we both couldn't get into the "'verse" at all. After staring at the black loading screen for some 10 minutes without any feedback but the happily swinging loading bar, we alt-F4-ed out.

The next attempt was somewhat more successful. We both got into Port Olisar, but ended up in different instances. I tried to take the Mustang Omega for a spin. The moment I activated the up thrusters, it started spinning uncontrollably like a mad humming top. Which only stopped (abruptly) when I had the pilot leave the cockpit. Seems the ship didn't like the pilot to get in again, because it quickly drifted away for no apparent reason when I tried. It "only" took some five more minutes to get back to a landing pad with the suit's thrusters, as I hadn't really come far with all the spinning before. Only that the moment the pilot would have touched the landing pad, he got catapulted away from the station. Going by the distance indicator he then drifted away at over 1km/s velocity. At 300km+ distance I logged out.

Last attempt went comparatively great. We both got into Port Olisar, ended up in the same instance, boarded the ships (took the hornet this time), cruised around a bit and jumped to an arbitrary satellite. There I wanted to replicate the first satellite demo they showed and EVA into the satellite. I misjudged the distance, parked the ship a bit too far away, disembarked, floated to the entrance some minutes and in the precise moment when I would've reached it, the client crashed to the desktop.

I'll be back in half a year probably to see what has changed. At this point I don't think the PU will be in a releasable state before the end of 2017.

Aztechnology post if you're okay!

Rofl. I need to download the new patch and get in there!

To keep myself occupied I've been busy finally watching Star Trek. Worked my way through TNG, just finished DS9 and I've moved onto Enterprise. On one hand it's helping make the wait a little easier, on the other hand the thirst has never been stronger.

the starfarer looks amazing in game, how come they changed the hangar though? looks like a bathroom now

I recommend You watching latest Reverse The Verse with Chris and Around The Verse with Erin Roberts.
They explain a lot of stuff that happen with current networking and talk about near future updates regarding to it.
Small peak, the 2.4 will introduce basic version of persistence, 2.5 will have much better persistence with economy and procedural tech, further will be improving it a lot and iterating on them.
They are finalizing work on networking too, they will be moving it around 2.5/2.6.
Few months after S42 release they should be done with physics overhaul, because current CryPhysics does not scale over 4 threads, so its great for current games, but not that great for heavy physics based MMOs.

They talked about a lot of stuff in those two interviews, i really recommend checking them out.

---
Ps. I think it would be great to make a list of features/systems they talked about in the past and recently to really sum up how ambitious and groundbreaking this game.

Have they talked much about developing weapons, ships and systems post release. I never played EVE but I does strike me as the reason it's so successful as a space sim is because not only do they have a player driven economy but also the combat and strategy metas change constantly as players are continually able to develop and improve weapons and tech. I think right? I know this doesn't compare to EVE as they are games with different outlooks but I'm wondering what kind of inspiration they've drawn. I know the general gist of what they have planned but to be completely honest I haven't spent that much time watching/reading about their plans for the continuing universe.
