Nice! I have formed a habit of straightening mine at the sides (once a month, along with getitng rid of any particularly untidy stragglers) but as of right now I think I'm going to let it go a little wild!

How do you straighten it? All I do is comb it down on the sides a bit to keep it from being crazy-poofy (actually, looking at this pic, it still looks poofy, but whatever, yolo). I've heard beard balm is something you can use to keep it down a bit, which I might look into.

What a beard!

Thanks fit-bro.

I mean I have the sides trimmed so they're fairly close to my face - I usually prefer the vertical lines but yours grown out wide looks great so I might give it a go. My face is quite narrow so it might not work for me anyway.

5 months. Sideburns trimmed a bit by my barber when getting my hair cut. Mustache trimmed a bit to keep it from totally consuming my mouth. That's it as far as trimming.

My beard has honestly become a conversation starter. A lot of people seem to really like asking me about it, complimenting it, or just bringing it up for whatever reason. I enjoy the attention, as it turns out.

Sweet beard.

I cut mine short two days ago: from 5-6cm to 1-1.5cm. I try again and again and each time, after weeks of growing it, I just reach a conclusion that I simply don't have a good face structure for a longer beard. I have a long face and since my facial hair are rather thin on the sides, longer beard only makes my face even longer.

I have a bit of a wider face, I think. I've considered trimming the sides but I'm honestly afraid I'll fuck it up, so I just let it be. My wife is supportive of my beard as-is, sooooo, I'm not gonna play with fire here and risk doing something to it.

That's crazy growth for 5 months tbqh.

So I've been told! I last shaved around October 7th. The longest I'd ever gone without shaving before this was a couple months, but that was over five years ago and it didn't quite fill out as much.

If it matters to anyone, I've been slowly losing the hair on the top of my head since I was 20 (maybe earlier, but I didn't notice it at all until I was about 20 years old). I'm 27 now, and my brother is a few years older than me and has much thinner hair. If my hair loss follows his, I'll assuredly choose to shave my head by the time I'm 30.

So, maybe all this beard hair came at the cost of the hair on top of my head. I'm actually OK with that trade-off.

Ok I'm trying to grow a beard, I never make it past 2 weeks but I want to try to let it grow see how it turns out. Any comments on what I should do with this if I should shape it or get rid of the neck area or anything?

This is 2 weeks of growing:

I just got a balm so I'll start applying that now.

Personally, I think it's best to not do any trimming at all if you've never really grown it out before and your goal is, as you said, to try growing it out. If you start shaving and trimming only a week or two into the process, you'll never be able to see what it looks like at full-size. You can always trim or shave later. Just my thoughts though, I'm sure others will disagree.

^^ agreed. At least a month and honestly more like 2-3 months for most people. You need to let it grow to the point where the shortest hairs are long enough that it'll look even once it's trimmed.

So, what's the consensus on barbers here? I really like my beard, but I have a hard time shaping it and keeping it trimmed up. I've never been to a barber before for my beard, but I really like the idea of going if they will help me get my beard in order.

Only thing I can recommend is to try and get opinions specifically about a barber in your area from someone who's used them for beard trims. The one I go to knows that I never want anything major off (I also know him personally, which helps) but I've heard/seen some horror stories of people going in for a tidy up and coming back inches shorter. D:

For me it also helps being *very* specific about what I want done.

There is a Beard Gaf! Hooray. I've been growing mine since Christmas. Haven't trimmed or styled it, just letting it grow wild. Its getting pretty bushy, good coverage but I've noticed I have four different colours - Mostly is brown (my hair colour) but there is a bit of ginger, a bit of blonde and one section on my chin to the right side of my face which is grey! what's up with that? Does anyone die their beard?

My moustache comes up a much lighter brown than the rest of my beard (there's a pic in this thread somewhere from last year but it's about the same length at the moment) and I have a few greys. Hard to say without seeing it whether yours looks odd but I will say this - you'll notice a lot more about your beard than other people will. A LOT more. Came in to work last week thinking it looked messy and a colleague asked if I'd had a trim. :p

Despite my grays I wouldn't consider colouring, but that's me. I've almost promised myself I'll embrace getting older and I don't plan on breaking that promise!

Can anyone point me to a good trimming guide/video? I've tried trimming a couple of times, but it seems that I haven't found a reliable technique yet and it almost always results in me having to shave off a good chunk of my beard to even everything out again. (Sometimes my fiancée has to trim, because she's actually good at it, but I really wanna learn this myself -.-")

How long have you been trying to grow it?

Haha. In all seriousness, it's probably about just over 3 weeks' worth of growth. The problem is that it just doesn't progress from there. No more thickness, no more coverage; nada. And to think that I have Greek genes in me also. Shameful.

Mine doesn't look much better than that after a few weeks, trust me. I don't feel like I have anything resembling a real beard until I'm getting on for three months.

Going for my first trim in 2ish weeks.

I have to say I'm overall very happy with how it turned out.

Holy shit dude, I won't lie, when I saw your first picture on this page I was like "I know this guys pain, we have similar shitty cheek growth" and now look at it!
It's give me some hope. I'm going for it.

Yeah you can see my entire progression over the last 3 months on the previous page. Just try and grow it! It don't start thickening up until month 2

seriously, that's a great photo

Wow, that turned out looking pretty good. Congratulations :D

Thanks! I don't wanna go back to clean shaven anytime soon. I want to keep growing my hair out too and keeping it tight on the sides.

Hey Hey. Been a lurker for a while, but decided to finally take a picture and post. Apologies for the cruddy bathroom lightning and gross mirror.

Needing some advice. I used to trim my beard about twice a week with crummy hair clippers with a guard. My plan has always been "let it grow 2 centimeters. Take 1 centimeter off" to line it all up. And that way, it would slowly grow longer and longer, but not be so grizzly. Well, I hit a point where my clipper's guards don't help anymore---my largest are 1 inch, so I'd keep bringing myself back down to that length. When I started, I could use a guard at 3/8. 1/2. 3/4. So-on-and-so-forth. I'm trying to figure out how to trim, and I can't find anything good online. Most articles I find are for shorter beards. Not that my beard is huge or anything, but it is definitely out-of-control. How on earth does one trim? Do I just free-hand the length with my scissors? Seems dangerous...

Go to a barber and ask him to trim it for you. Also,a pic with the other side of your face would help so we can see how it looks.

Damn man! This looks great, I think you conviced me in growing mine (only have a goatee atm), do you use any kind of oil/conditioner?

Thanks! It's time for you to grow grow grow!

I condition every day in the shower and use oil or balm when I get out (and I brush it with a boar bristle brush)

Not sure if this is something only readily available in the UK (certainly a UK brand) but does anyone know what strength hold the Captain Fawcett's Ricki Hall Booze & Baccy Moustache Wax is? I'm getting to the end of my tin and while I love it I fancy a change of scent but I want to be careful not to get too strong a hold as I prefer it natural (and like the hold to loosen throughout the day). I've assumed it's just a medium hold (because it doesn't mention firm hold like some of their others) but then others specifically say medium hold and this didn't.

I actually asked their official Twitter but they seemed to misunderstand the question (and defend the scent of Booze & Baccy when I told them I like it in the tweet) so I thought I'd check here before trying to make them understand this basic question again.

Really happy with where my beard and moustache are at the moment, this is the longest I've had them (last time I shaved them off at eight months, I passed eight months a week or so ago this time). If I didn't hate all pictures of myself I'd post something up - I'll try and get something I'm happy with at some point.

So I'm looking for a new beard oil. The stuff I use smells good, but I find my hair kinda feels dry after a few hours. Really noticing it today after I used my amish beard balm yesterday and my beard stayed nice and soft all day long.

The oil I use is from modcabin.com, the ingredients are all natural. So I'm wondering if a different oil will have a different effect or is it my hair and nothing will do what I want.

Any suggestions?

Surely it's that a balm coats the hair giving it that soft feel, whereas an oil is absorbed by it meaning that it will feel less soft to the touch (eventually) while actually being more nourishing to the hair itself? That's always been my understanding.

But if I use the oil daily shouldn't it work that way? The hair should just start to be naturally softer and healthier? Or am I totally wrong on this?

Also I haven't really gonegone more than a day without putting an oil or balm in it, so maybe what I have is just as good as it gets.

I read you guys talking about how much you like your oils and how it makes your beard feel good, and I just don't get that with mine. I just apply mine everyday since it's supposed to be good for it.

I read online that you put on the oil in the morning and balm at night. Is that right? And that over time, I guess a week or two, the hair should start feeling softer and look better? That's how I'm using them but I'm not sure if that's right or not.

I assume this would be accurate if you were to allow it to settle in - personally I'm forever washing my beard which I assume is going to strip some of the oils that I'm adding in.

I know where you're coming from. My beard is soft but it doesn't feel *as* soft all the way throughout the day as it does when I've just applied oil. I'm not a huge fan of balm personally - I've struggled to find one that doesn't leave it greasy (which is the fact that it coats it as far as I know, as I mentioned above) although I don't know if that's because I use too much. I don't really go in for this "use sparingly" bollocks. :p

My oil routine:

Shower.
Towel dry beard.
Put some oil in my hands, rub it into beard and try to get it down to my skin.
Put some oil on my beard comb.
Comb beard into position.

Done.

Seems like my beard is relatively soft, but I wouldn't call it insanely-so.
