Still, as an overall package, DiRT Rally delivers some incredibly intense and gripping racing. Sure, it's not for everyone. Its unforgiving nature and high level of difficulty means it won't appeal to those who enjoy winning every race, and who like the luxuries of a rewind button. However, if you're up for the challenge, enjoy blasting cars down narrow dirt tracks where danger potentially lurks around every corner, and can deal with the disappointment of not winning every race – but want to feel like you've really achieved something when you do – DiRT Rally is a truly great racer.

Dirty Rally can be unforgiving, unrelenting, and seemingly as high in its demands as the infamous hill climb at Pikes Peak. But the journey is sublime.

Note: This review originally ran for the PC version. Although this PS4 version has additions (see sidebar above), the score remains the same.

A Few Console Additions
The console version adds a series of tutorial videos and fully loaded cars that can ease progression early on, but these don’t fundamentally change the game.

Despite a few issues, Dirt Rally is a triumphant return to form for Codemasters. The PS4 version arrives as a slightly more fleshed-out package at release and its technical performance is admirable. It's still mightily difficult, but if you're a rally enthusiast or even just have a passing interest in a challenging racing game, you can’t go wrong with Dirt Rally.

Dirt Rally gets Codemasters back to their roots, with a game that focuses on rallying through and through. It’s tough and unforgiving of your mistakes, but that’s what rallying is about and it makes getting to grips with the car’s handling, measuring your approach to a stage and coming out on top all the more satisfying.

Damn, sounds great. I do miss a good rally game, and might actually check this out. Unfortunately to the game's detriment, there's a lot of other good stuff coming out this month too.

Are any of these video reviews?

Are there any comparisons with the PC version graphically?

Also, i'm glad it's 60fps on PS4 too. Finally a proper Rally game.

Not been this excited for a racing game from codies since mcrae 2.0, can't wait. (I want it for console because my pc is scrub tier)

In videogames years since we had a good Rally game...

And therein lies my problem, and no doubt MANY others. I do think though that it will do alright in the long run. The game is great after all...

There's a video review here with PS4 gameplay. Note the video is 30 fps while the game is 60 fps.

Loved the other games in the series! This is a must buy for me, but when it gets a bit cheaper as with all the DIRT games the price drops fast, and I have just bought Trackmania which is scratching my racing itch for the time being.

The dark Souls of racing games indeed. Bought it and loved it on PC during early access. Glad to see more people have a chance to play this amazing game.

This and Dark Souls 3 are going to keep me busy for a while.

Love that this game exists (I wanted a pure Dirt Rally game for a long time). Thanks Codemasters and to the dev team for making it possible! :)

I think I'll pick this up. Likely trade in Quantum Break in for it once I'm done with the game. Gamseek seems to be the cheapest in the UK for it at the moment.

Need to see the performance analysis of this. I even forgot this game was coming out so soon, have it on PC for ages.

Reviews are only for the PS4 version, but at least that version sounds like solid 1080p60.

One thing that stands out on the PS4 is just how well it runs. This isn’t hitting anything like the graphical heights of Driveclub, but it manages to run at 1080p and with a solid 60fps, while the environments can, and often do, stretch off into the distance.

The console version does at least keep up with its PC counterpart. With a wealth of cars to tame--each giving your thumb a considerable workout as you wrestle just to keep them on the road--it’s commendable that the PlayStation 4 version maintains a steady 60fps throughout, ensuring a fantastic sense of speed and ensuring each twitch of the wheel is just as responsive as you would expect.

I'm hoping to pick this up on release day. Seems like a really good sim. I need a rally fix since Forza doesn't have any.

How much of it is git good and how much is getting the tuning right? I prefer things being more skill reliant than tuning and car set up.

I personally would say that, in most (realistic) racing games skill makes up the majority of the performance, and setup is just that final icing on the cake.

I waited all this time for this game to come to consoles, and now I'm waiting for my gaming PC to arrive in late April. I'm gonna end up double dipping, I just know it.

Hopefully this will sell well to convince Codemasters that there is a market for realistic rally games. Last I heard they were going back to an arcade style game for their next entry in the franchise.

I would be okay with them alternating between sim and arcade entries in the series. They could share the assets even. > Everyone is happy and wins.

In DiRT Rally especially(!) I think the standard setups are really good. The only thing I bother setting up is the brake balance. A damaged car due to too risky driving loses you definitely more time than a not ideal setup in a career event.

I don't know how much your racing gear at home is a factor though. Never played it with a gamepad. Thrustmaster TX and T300 + clutch and shifter seem pretty ideal (my T500 seemed to heavy, haven't heard good things about the Logitech wheels with this game, Fanatach probably depends on the kind of wheel (diameter/weight) you use on the hub.
knowing how to setup your controller and being able to drive with manual and clutch on a gamepad probably helps a lot, would be my guess.

I've been playing this on PC for the past 4 months, and I really hope that the game finds an audience on consoles as well. It's fantastic!!

Tuning isn't necessary at all in this game imo. I have ~80 hours played. If you can drive, you can drive.

I probably opened the tuning menu less than five times and always for the same reason, to change gear ratios a bit for Germany.

Yeah, this. You'll definitely need to adjust gear ratios if anything (which is easy even if you know squat about cars.)

Unless you literally want to be top 5 in the daily/weekly/monthly leaderboards against other players, you never have to tune anything. And unless you have years and years of hardcore racing experience, you won't be competing for top 5 spots whether you have the perfect setups or not. Dirt Rally was my favourite game of last year and every now and then I did pretty well online (when I didn't crash that is..). In about 100 hours of playing the game, most of those hours in online events, I probably opened the tuning menu less than five times and always for the same reason, to change gear ratios a bit for Germany.

Tuning is simply not needed to thoroughly enjoy the game but to enjoy the game, you have to put in the effort and enjoy driving rally cars, finding your limits and accepting that it takes time to get good. You will crash and there are days when nothing goes right. That's where enjoying the genre comes in. Even when everything goes wrong, you are still driving a rally car in a damn fine game.

Unfortunately the game runs "out of content" too soon, ie. if you play the game daily, you will end up learning the stages a bit too well. I could live with two cars in the whole game (I've yet to try probably half of the cars) but in the long run I need more stages to drive.

Pro tip for starters who go with the Mini in the early career:
Adjusting brake bias to the rear will give you a much better turn-in in tight corners. It will make braking twitchier, but it's easier than trying to be a handbrake pro in an underpowered FWD car, when really you are a newcomer.

Visually i think its looks really nice. Some of the lighting is gorgeous, and brings memories of MGSV in Afghanistan. Audio is fab. A friend of mine Mark Knight is one of the senior audio guys there, and i think he's done the music also. He did the music on F12015 also.
