Star Ocean 5 character gets less-sexy underwear 'in Fear of Western Criticism'

You got me on the shooter part tbh.

However, I still believe that it's indicative of liking that stuff in real life. If someone enjoys watching hentai of children having sex, I simply cant see how they can detach that from liking CP in real life.

Just to be clear, there is rape porn, as well as guro hentai, which involves mutilation.

We don't have to go down this route in this thread. Lolicons can be both not explicitly pedophiles and also disgusting at the same time.

I honestly don't know. This thread confuses me; a bunch of people dying on a hill about almost literally nothing.

It was changed AMERICA supposedly told them to change it, even though nobody over here that would supposedly demand such a change even knows this game exists.

This is a Square-Enix decision, and they can claim they were worried about negative controversy but chances are, had it been released as is, nobody here would still give a shit.

Its a manufactured controversy to get people talking about the game

Shame this had to happen.
If this is what they changed for Japan really makes me fear what they're gonna change for West itself.
Have to reconsider pre-ordering..

Different culture, age of consent is 13 in Japan, sexualized teenagers are a thing there.

I'm not big on it either, but I also understand different viewpoints and takes on it.

And teens aren't hyper sexualized in America?

Wait that's all they changed? The fuck is anyone pissy about?

Japanese developers starting to listen westerners shitty complaints, first they'll change small things, then they'll go full Nintendo Treehouse. How is it fair to the Japanese audience?

every one of these threads deserves a headcount of the number of complainers who also have an anime avatar.

So...why mention this at all two days before the game's release and raising a shitstorm when they could have kept quiet and assumed that hardly anyone would notice? The number of people comparing the length of the character's clothes in pre release footage and post release should be that high, right?

Breaking News! Star Ocean 5: Developer silently changed panty size of character, players are shocked

In light of the recent controversy around the game Star Ocean 5, we interviewed Player A, who first discovered the shocking changes the developers silently made:

"You know, everytime I looked at her panties I felt that something was wrong. At first I thought it was just my imagination, but no matter how often I looked at her panties, I couldn't shake this feeling. Something felt really off.
That's when I decided to investigate. I looked through all released screenshots and videos and after many hours looking at panties and comparing them I finally got confirmation. Her panties were different in earlier footage! They were smaller, you see? Can you believe this!? They just silently changed her panties and thought no one would notice!
This really gave me a heavy blow. I thought the developers had integrity! But no, I was mistaken. This incident made me really lose faith in them."

I like to think they're just joking.

it makes me cringe less

I'd say a good chunk are being 100% unironic in their complaints about the gaijin menace.

Hell I remember a big purge that happened not long ago where a bunch of gafers got banned for justifying lolicon in media.

And teens aren't hyper sexualized in America?
Not at all:
iu

I agree w/ the Japanese reactions of my fellow Japanese peers. Westerners are pretty hypocritical. We Americans love to cope to our guns and endless amounts of gore, but can't seem to handle a pair of panties. No wonder our country is so messed up.

I'm half-serious.

Hyperbole much? I'd like you to point out where in my post I have mentioned anything about stuff like that.

But if you've had any interest in the game before these news you would know the character who got her panties changed isn't even risky in comparison to other character, I think it's genuine worry to see how Fiore will end up here.

Nothing about his statement is wrong. Nobody gives two fucks about excessive violence in western games. But should someone dare to render a female character in any way that can be possibly seen as remotely sexual and you've got 25 articles from Kotaku about how the entire industry is sexist
Horrible argument. 1) Excessive violence IS criticized. A lot. There's a sizable portion of the gaming crowd who don't want every game to be filled with violence, but would rather see more games that don't rely on killing/beating up people as their main mechanics (i.e. have some Uncharted(-like) game where you don't kill 300 people but gameplay consists of things other than violence). 2) There's nothing wrong with having good-looking, sexy female characters, but there's sexy and then there's just plain pathetic, idiotic pandering that is nothing but objectifying of women and is just a part of a larger problem of how women are treated in the world. If you don't understand how harming the kind of large scale objectifying of women in all aspects of life still is in our societies, then maybe don't enter these discussions with such ridiculous crap.

Fucking ewww dude, Americans getting off to this shit. Where were the complaints?

Or do white people have a superiority complex and feel only they can complain about things they want changed?

I can't tell if you're joking. But no matter how glam that little girl is, if anyone is getting off then they are the outlier. It's more of a princess thing than a tramp thing.

If you want to argue these shows are archaic presentation rituals to marry off your daughter then... sure. That's the root of it. But I can promise you that's not what people think about it in the South.

I'm still tryna figure out why they had to change the jp version of the game as well?

Something is not right... "In fear of Western criticism" should mean only the NA version would get censored. Why both?

Me thinks they wanted controversy.

Look at her fucking face dude, it's plastered in make up, you're telling me that's fucking normal? A little girl that's been plastered in make up to be made older and more appealing. What's wrong with you dude?

Hyperbole much? I'd like you to point out where in my post I have mentioned anything about stuff like that.

Ummmm I wasn't even responding to you. But sure...if you needed to get that out of your chest to reassure anyone then thats fine by me.

With how horribly the Japanese society still treats women in general, who really gives a fuck about them getting fewer games that don't have such pathetic pandering & objectifying of women?

And that,I think, it's the bjg cultural difference here. From my understanding, most japanese understand the difference between reality and animated media(except some extreme otaku dudes, who are looked down upon by regular japanese people anyway).

You do know that the parents of these children are considered to be monsters by the majority of people out there right?

Yep. There's a LOT of complaints and even some articles about Fallout 4's absurd and complete lack of non-violent options and how it's just one big fucking murderfest when it doesn't need to be. I was extremely disappointed by it. Saying that no one complains about violence is quite silly.

Didn't know women get harassed in the streets when they're out in the late hours, while here in America, they're constantly raped and harassed. Nice try dude

My favorite part of all this is that there's still upskirt shots in the game. You'd think if they wanted to change this, they'd just get rid of the camera angles, not alter the panties. It's still going to upset those who don't want to see them, and it's going to upset those who want their pantsu~, so what was the point?

Last one made me burst laughing.

Also, they're not exactly wrong about our hypocrisy.

Japan don't hold back bro. Some of these are up there w/ the La Blue Girl guy's comments recently in both hilarity and honest-to-goodness-truth.

Meanwhile....

Japan is one of the most misogynistic, sexist developed countries in the world. If I were a woman, certainly wouldn't want to live there. Hopefully Japanese men will start caring more about woman as a actual human beings rather than seeing 16 year olds skimpy underwear.

You have any proof of this or are you just blowing smoke? Outside of certain animations I'd say Japan's actually less sexist than America.

Okay, but is it any worst than America? Because I'd venture to say America is actually worst. It's much more capitalist-driven as a whole and hyper-capitalism, as a side-effect, produces more violence, including sexual violence and discrimination. It's a byproduct of hyper-capitalist societies and America's a decent bit more into that department than Japan's ever been.

I mean, that's the dumbest part of all this. It's like the decision to do this was made in good will, but it misses the point entirely.

Can't help but laugh at the Japanese reactions.

Personally, I don't particularly care about seeing her pantsuu, but I do wish Japanese devs would worry less about what's palatable to an increasingly less-tolerant western fanbase.

Sexy cam is the problem 99% of the time

Person you quoted was though so I jumped into conclusions, sorry mate.
I do hope this is the only change to the game for West too, hopefully they don't go overboard.

Me thinks they wanted controversy.

Pretty much. They're blaming criticism from "The West" about the appearance of their female character designs without really sighting WHO SAID WHAT. I've heard people on this site they are put off by Fiore's design, are they all white westerners? Have they launched some actual petition? Plenty more are in favor of her design, myself included....except the cat tail, not loving that.

In short, don't blame some corporate censorship on the evil western whiteys, show me the receipts. Nobody over here is telling Square-Enix in Japan what to do.

Didn't know women get harassed in the streets when they're out in the late hours, while here in America, they're constantly raped and harassed. Nice try dude

Instead they get constantly groped in broad daylight in a train cart. Or they suffer from institutional misogyny where they cant even divorce their partners if its though they are pregnant.

This is all irrelevant though in a topic about the size of an anime's underwear in a jrpg.

Just put mosaic censorship over everything. They can claim that they censored it for delicate American sensibilities and the Japanese players can pretend that the character is naked. Win-win.

They aren't wrong though, I'll never understand what's wrong with the nudity in the US, especially with how worst thing are allowed and enjoyed there...

Hypocrisy is what allows us to make half-steps forward.

I think showing panties and sexualizing a character could be fine. If the character is clearly grown up, and displays some degree of contextualized autonomy over their sexuality in game.

In a lot of Japanese games, it's a small girl who is shy and confused why people are so enthralled by her pooper. It should be clear why these things are uncomfortable for the west.

Personally, I don't think Japanese devs should give a shit about what Western gamers think in situations like this. People complaining about panty shots probably weren't the demographic they were going for, anyways. And if someone happens to be a hardcore Star Ocean fan and doesn't like minor panty shots, I'm guessing that personal probably still wouldn't skip the first Star Ocean game in seven years.

In a 2015 World Economic Forum study on gender equality, Japan was ranked 101st out of 145 assessed countries. That's lower than Azerbaijan.

The US was ranked 28th.
