Star Ocean 5 character gets less-sexy underwear 'in Fear of Western Criticism'

Pretty much. They're blaming criticism from "The West" about the appearance of their female character designs without really sighting WHO SAID WHAT. I've heard people on this site they are put off by Fiore's design, are they all white westerners? Have they launched some actual petition? Plenty more are in favor of her design, myself included....except the cat tail, not loving that.

In short, don't blame some corporate censorship on the evil western whiteys, show me the receipts. Nobody over here is telling Square-Enix in Japan what to do.

Lets not pretend things happen in a vacuum.

And that,I think, it's the bjg cultural difference here. From my understanding, most japanese understand the difference between reality and animated media(except some extreme otaku dudes, who are looked down upon by regular japanese people anyway).

It's possible it is. I can only judge this from my perspective as a western dude. However my post is also mainly relegated towards people in the west that do this, not necessarily people in Japan.

Just to be clear, there is rape porn, as well as guro hentai, which involves mutilation.

rape fetishism is a fetish, pedophilia is a mental disorder. this comparison would only make sense if rape porn was exclusively consumed by people who have the drive to rape people all the time.

edit: also while we're at it child porn is not the same as violent videogames, or homosexuality. please stop these false equivalences, I'm so tired of them.

You have any proof of this or are you just blowing smoke? Outside of certain animations I'd say Japan's actually less sexist than America.

Okay, but is it any worst than America? Because I'd venture to say America is actually worst. It's much more capitalist-driven as a whole and hyper-capitalism, as a side-effect, produces more violence, including sexual violence and discrimination. It's a byproduct of hyper-capitalist societies and America's a decent bit more into that department than Japan's ever been.
http://www.theguardian.com/world/2016/mar/02/japan-women-sexually-harassed-at-work-report-finds
March 2, 2016. Less than a month ago.
In the first survey of its kind in Japan, the health, labour and welfare ministry said 30% of respondents in full- and part-time employment reported being sexually harassed at work. Among full-time workers, the figure rose to 35%.

The survey of more than 9,600 women aged 25-44 who are currently working or were previously employed found that 40% had been touched in an unpleasant way while 17% had been “asked or pressed to have a sexual relationship”.

The most frequent perpetrators – in 24.1% of cases – were the women’s bosses.

http://www.japantimes.co.jp/news/20...101st-in-world-in-new-gender-equality-report/
November 19, 2015. Less than six months ago.
The report analyzed gender equality based on the categories of politics, economy, education and health.

Japan saw its ranking in political empowerment rise sharply after the number of women in ministerial posts rose to five under Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s new Cabinet.

But Japan’s rankings dropped for wage equality, the number of women in managerial posts and the number of female professional and technical workers.

As a result, the country’s overall ranking improved only slightly despite the Abe government’s policy of encouraging women to play more active roles.
By the way, Japan is ranked 101st on gender equality. Among developed nations, it has the lowest gender equality rank. See for yourself.

The 'whatabout' argument also doesn't excuse sexism in Japan. Focus on that instead of trying to change the focus.

Look at her fucking face dude, it's plastered in make up, you're telling me that's fucking normal? A little girl that's been plastered in make up to be made older and more appealing. What's wrong with you dude?

I didn't say it was normal. I said it wasn't intended to arouse. Be careful not to infer too much, it leads to fallacious arguments.

Fucking ewww dude, Americans getting off to this shit. Where were the complaints?

Or do white people have a superiority complex and feel only they can complain about things they want changed?

I'm going to assume this is sarcasm, because there is absolutely a sizable group that has serious problems with pageantry in general, especially when it involves kids.

Instead they get constantly groped in broad daylight in a train cart. Or they suffer from institutional misogyny where they cant even divorce their partners if its though they are pregnant.

This is all irrelevant though in a topic about the size of an anime's underwear in a jrpg.

You need to stop watching so much Japanese porn dude.

"All foreigners play are games where you slaughter people indifferently. So they got a lot of nerve to speak up about small things like this in other countries' games"

Well can't argue with that.

Those are some hate filled comments. I can't agree more with this one though.. It's fucking sad that our jacked up western censorship values are now permeating even Japanese releases. It's already bad enough that westerners get Japanese releases with heavy censorship and cut content. Don't ruin it for the Japanese too. This sets a horrible presidence.

Japanese developers starting to listen westerners shitty complaints, first they'll change small things, then they'll go full Nintendo Treehouse. How is it fair to the Japanese audience?

Not our fault nobody in Japan buys games anymore.

Right, I mean it only happens in porn. Thats why the metros have fucking carts just for women to grope other women.
Yeah I know, Mr expert.

groping.jpg

They have warnings, in some trains, men have to raise their arms, there are trains exclusively for women. Trains are a big deal in Japan, the all women train carts were likely made a thing so that female customers don't seek out other modes of transportation.

I don't know those people. Does guro exclusively cater to people with a mental disorder where they have the urge to chop people up while fucking them?

It caters to people who... likes that stuff. Why they like it still escapes me to this day, I prefer to not know why they like it. But I highly doubt that the people who enjoy it also gets off to the real deal. Which is why I brought it up.

That bonus picture is both disheartening and hilarious.

I understand their frustration but some of these comments are crazy. At the end of the day, it's a piece of cloth on a video game character. It seems like such a minor change, I'm surprised it was even brought up. I have a hard time believing that people could really care about the barely visible underwear a clothed character is wearing.

It's like people complaining about Tracer's pose in Overwatch, or the petting being removed from the new Fire Emblem. I don't think anyone is really going to miss these things, but as long as they don't agree with why it was changed, they'll get hung up on principle and start throwing around words like "censorship" as if it's an inherently negative concept.

So then why do you make light of it and say that its a porn thing?

Its like you are arguing in bad faith!

Wait wait wait..what?

See the rest of the conversation.

OT but somewhat related, Overwatch's Tracer had a "sexy" victory pose that the community forced to remove
http://www.allgamesdelta.net/2016/03/blizzard-to-remove-tracer-pose-from.html

I like the character(but i don't care about the game) and i think it's probably for the good, but the fact that the pose had to be removed because:
"She's Fast.
She's Silly.
She's Kind.
She's a good Friend."

etc it's just bullshit imo, why can't a good, fast, silly, kind person be or desire to be sexy(not that i find that pose sexy though)? It's like passing from a bad stereotype to another bad one.

Talk about cutting off the nose to spite the face. Granny panties aren't going to do shit to placate SJW's who had their eye on this. They will instead write their outrage blog posts and articles about why the character is in a thigh high dress in the first place, or has to be saved/protected by the male cast. That's not even getting into the mage/witch character.

That Tracer pose is also not sexy at all, imo, haha. Weird to me that people would both get offended by this and other people by them removing it.

It's just... normal.

For context, this is a train during rush hour in Tokyo, which every salaryman, student, and housewife uses every single day:

Before some broad-sweeping stones are thrown from cushy glass houses, consider that level of personal space (especially when alcohol is introduced into the mix) if it were NYC or London.

Also these armchair culture wars have only the slightest shred of anything to do directly with swapping one cartoon's underwear texture map out for another.

I don't recall any campaigns for this, honestly.

And at any rate, this was clearly the devs call. If they didn't want to make said call, they wouldn't have, criticism be damned. All art gets criticized, you ether deal with it you or stretch yourself trying to please everyone.

Um, are you trying to explain away groping?

Lol at these "Japanese" reactions. If you pick some reactions from us from YouTube comments or whatnot you'll get vile stuff too.

How did we actually come from sexy teenagers in Japanese games to pedophilia and child porn?
