Star Ocean 5 character gets less-sexy underwear 'in Fear of Western Criticism'

Damn the japanese fans are going in lol Honestly this is just stupid, why the hell did they need to change it considering it was already a niche game to begin with and doing this is only going to piss off more people?

That's what I couldn't understand. This is Star Ocean, not Final Fantasy. Only us fans will probably be getting Star Ocean 5 lol

The "5 westerners on the internet" line was a joke, just pointing out that only a very vocal minority cares. You'd have to be a vocal minority to be the type to fight the camera and then react with outrage at what you found, and maybe write an article or make a video about it.

And a very bad one at that.

Could you point out the westerners on the internet complaining about her panties?

because of a panty edit?

He explained why it was more than a panty edit in the very post you quoted. Anyone thinking this is about panties is either missing the forest for the trees or feigning being obtuse. People are not happy that these little culture clashes keep happening and the censoring side keeps winning out. How many times has something like this happened in the last 6 months alone? While I have little interest or respect for boycotts, especially when vocal, the sentiment is fairly understandable. Up until now, the ideal, and the struggle, was to get Japanese content here with as little adjustment as necessary, but now there is new competing, diametrically opposed ideal: Japanese games must be "fixed". The idea that this fixing is moving into the Japanese versions, by the developers own words, is naturally concerning. So people want to get their point across somehow. Any one change isn't the problem, it's the trend or precedent.

No one can because they likely don't exist. The girl is moderately dressed and looks relatively normal. No one was even interested what was up her skirt or cared, most were interested in the witch lady's backside since she's an actual character purely designed to titillate.

It's another prequel type of game. They obviously can't go beyond Star Ocean 3 since it's the end of the series.

Can be a fun series so long as you ignore everything about the ending of 3 and ignore everything from 4.
What I thought...

Makes a lot more sense.

No idea why any of this matters to anyone tho.

man, women sure have it rough every month.

oh boy this shit keeps happening. and instead of having fruitful discussions about mature representation of sex and sexuality in games we get the same tired old arguments over panty, butt, and titty.

The change was a preemptive move so of course not... I'm not sure what you're trying to argue, but you're not doing it well. The reality is that nobody cares about this and it seems silly to change something because a GAF post or Polygon article might eventually complain about it after moving the camera around for "research."

It's not a hill anyone should die on, it was a waste of resources to change, it's an even more absurd thing to check, and it's a foolish argument to pretend that the developers didn't change it for the reason they said that they changed it...

Well put. Pretty much this.

Isn't he the artist that called the Kotaku guy gay because he didn't like his style? Seems like another jerk to me.

that's not at all what happened. every time I see this it drives me crazy because of how Kamitani was dragged through the mud. His initial joke got so blown out of proportion and misconstrued. By the time he was able to clarify what he meant with the help of a translator, the press was already done having their circle jerk.

It was very much that.

And we can thank the likes of Jason Schricer whatever for that one.

he didn't call him gay, but schreirer called him "14 years old boy"

As you can see, the sorceress was designed by a 14-year-old boy. Perhaps game development studios should stop hiring teenagers? At least they're cheap, I guess.

Japan don't hold back bro. Some of these are up there w/ the La Blue Girl guy's comments recently in both hilarity and honest-to-goodness-truth.

Meanwhile....

You have any proof of this or are you just blowing smoke? Outside of certain animations I'd say Japan's actually less sexist than America.

Okay, but is it any worst than America? Because I'd venture to say America is actually worst. It's much more capitalist-driven as a whole and hyper-capitalism, as a side-effect, produces more violence, including sexual violence and discrimination. It's a byproduct of hyper-capitalist societies and America's a decent bit more into that department than Japan's ever been.

I don't usually post but you are mostly true ... lets say 90% of what you said is true
I've been living in Japan for a year, I've seen machismo at my office, but that was more 1 single ass-hole humiliating a female co-worker than a general state of every single male in the company. And a Japanese friend of mine told me that she got a f*cked-up treatment from a male boss ... but you can get those reaction in our western countries.
I wouldn't say Japanese guys tend to be less of a dick with girls, it is just girls that do not let those guy belittle them as much as before.
There are many screwed-up things in social interactions in Japan, but sexism is not on the top of the list any longer.

And I agree with those who see those Japanese reactions both hilarious and the utmost truth.
We don't bat an eye when slaughter games come to the shelves we even find it cool when you unlock achievement for being hyper efficient or ultra violent, but we start brandishing forks as soon as we see a damn underwear (that is just an element of the game and not the sole purpose of the game).

I might sound dumb here but our world is really done for if sexuality seems immoral and killing a good thing.
I mean guys, there are only a few real basic pleasures in life : good food, good sex, and having kids ... but not everything at the same time!

Well, I mean, sexuality isn't considered immoral in western entertainment. Games like Dragon Age, Witcher, and Mass Effect generally have no issues with sexuality in their titles. So the idea that someone changed their game in fear of the West smells like bullshit.

What a shitshow that whole thing was. Don't forgot this nugget of Jason outright saying she was a lolicon fantasy.

[...]

For reference, let's look at this picture of the sorceress. Other than her proportions, there are a couple of details worth noting. One is that her shirt is trying to escape from her chest. She also has a very childish face that resembles lolicon imagery. I don't think either of those features is beautiful or worth lauding in any way.

[...]

See, I don't think the sorceress's design is problematic because of her large breasts. What's problematic is that the character is explicitly designed to draw our eyes to her large breasts. They're exposed; they're jiggling; they're disproportionate. They're immediately striking. They're part of a lolicon fantasy, drawn to appeal to people who are interested in lolicon fantasies (and people who are interested in large breasts).

[...]

I don't think sex or sexuality will be gotten rid of. That seems like an extremist take.

Plus there are plenty of games featuring sexual content even from the west. Hell, most of our media too. Watch a music video once in awhile and see a bunch of women dancing in tinier thongs than whatever this character was wearing.

When something is changed in order to not offend any morals etc. it is a bit different from normal localisation. If Bioware was too remove any same sex relationship from the Russian version of Mass effect could they also just hide behind the idea of localising it?
Those are both good points. However, a big part of localization is making the game more accessible to foreign audiences, and that includes changing dialogue and clothing. Simply translating Japanese to English usually isn't enough, so you aren't getting the "true" experience unless you are playing in Japanese. It would also be the devs choice to keep or remove same sex relationships for a Russian game, Russian culture is much different from ours.

In the end, I think that most people are complaining not because of censorship, but because there are no more panties.

It's like he did 5 seconds of googling and could only remember that japan has lolicon and that's whats wrong with animevidya games these days

Heh love the Dragoncrown designs. Lol the people complaining didnt even relize they were giving the game so much pubilicty and it ended up selling way more because of the SJWs.

You guys realize that Schreier and Kamitani both apologized to each others for their comments and reconciled their differences, right? Why are you still talking about that stupid crap?

OK, and? That falls pretty neatly under the umbrella of "Western attitudes towards sex in games." It really wasn't the point of the post at all.
So non-misogyny is "western attitude" now?

That's not the least bit true.
Oh?

This is attracting too much attention so I'll just stop. I don't want to get banned for things i'm not even in favor or against of. It seems at least I made some people laugh.

Apologies if I offended someone.
You do realize that editing your post after everyone quoted it is futile, right? Thankfully we've all seen the beautiful poetry of that Japanese mansplaining. <3

Hahahah what

Why must localizations be expected to adhere to the moral standards of other cultures? I personally believe that highlighting moral and ethical differences prevalent in one's culture should be endorsed. Moreover, removing ethical differences is not mandatory to have a localization that successfully conveys its content material to a new audience.
