PS4K information (~2x GPU power w/ clock+, new CPU, price, tent. Q1 2017)

I don't get the point of this move, considering how few people own 4K TVs.

But holding off on buying a PS4 has apparently paid off for me. I'll be getting this upgraded model somewhere down the line.

If the PS4 is still the dominant and most popular SKU, then the games need to work and perform adequately.

Nintendo didn't let the 3DS become obsolete with the N3DS. 3DS games going forward will be fine. Same here.

Except that the N3DS didn't become the standard focus. Is it that hard for people to understand lol.

Those who got an N3DS got screwed(unless they never own an original 3DS). What they got a Wii game port as an exclusive? Better performance for a WiiU game port? Come on. Please.

That's a cool rumour to think about, thank you OP. Pretty much what I expected (without regards to games, that is), but provides some solid numbers to discuss.

But you will be forced to now. Maybe not every year but faster than what most pc gamers are used to. Usually you would wait for the entire console generation to upgrade our pc but now with .5 consoles coming out faster pc gamers are going to have to keep up with it. They will need to upgrade or risk losing bragging right to graphics on consoles now they are not restricted to long generation time of 7+ years now to 3 years.

I don't know what type of PC gamer are you talking about. Bragging rights? Come on. I am very proud of my old PC keeping up like it did, and when I buy a new one I am not going to ditch it just because something interesting will get out 3 years later that won't be optimized for it. I mean, seriously.

they were discussing a better CPU which would raise the price to $499.99

there is currently no plan for any type of trade in program for current PS4 users

It was also made very clear that current games would not be getting any type of performance upgrades

It was also stated that these games will in fact work for the PS4 but with considerable sacrifices made to performance.

I'm going to assume Sony haven't finalized the launch plans and as such, I'm going to give them the benefit of the doubt and assume they're not going to make a number of horrific marketing miscalculations that would, without a doubt, take them back to being the anti-consumer company.

I have one question though. Is PS4K the final name?

This thing must come out soon if they are telling everybody and their mother about it.

Sony have their biggest exclusive of perhaps the whole gen coming out in one month and they go around telling everybody that they should not buy this PS4 since they have bigger one on the way. Just seem so non-strategic and poorly thought through. I wonder how big impact this will have on console sales.

Bingo.

Something's just not adding up. They've been in this business for over 20 years now so they know that whatever they talk about (behind closed doors) at GDC has the potential of leaking and causing a negative effect on product sales. More importantly, they remember (quite vividly) what happened the last time they had a $499.99 console in rotation.

I'm 100% confident in the OP -- when there's this much smoke there has to be a fire somewhere. However, something (on Sony's side) smells extremely fishy. Not bad fishy (e.g. "WHAT is that smell?!?) but good fishy (e.g. WHAT is that smell!). After their incredible turn-around with the PlayStation brand, they would never in a billion years take on such a massive risk without the potential of a massive reward. They nailed the PS4 price + features almost three years ago, nailed the PSVR price + features less than 3 weeks ago, but are seemingly going to drop the ball (and then some) with their new PS4 in less than 3 months? There has to be something else with this new console that makes it all worth it.

Sure. if devs target PS4.5 with the intention of porting the game over to OG Ps4, games will remain just as good on Ps4. The same way last gen ports on Ps3 and 360 from Ps4 games were just so terrific.

There are good reasons to believe the situation won't be the same. You're talking about the same basic architecture, common tools, a common operating system, and likely the same amount of memory on the PS4 vs. PS4K. That's a far cry from the PS3/PS4 situation where designing a game to exploit the new consoles made it extremely difficult to run on older systems. That wouldn't be the case here at all, especially if the CPU isn't significantly upgraded.

Another reason for optimism is that a confirmed premium price point means Sony is clearly still planning on manufacturing and selling the base PS4. It's virtually guaranteed that far more consumers will own and actively purchase games for the PS4, so while adding bells and whistles for the premium crowd makes sense it would be foolish to publish half-baked experiences for the larger audience. At some point PS4K prices will drop enough that it will become the mass market product. So long as that's a good 5+ years from the start of the generation I don't see this as a dramatic departure from the past.

The interesting part will be tracking what system new game purchases are played on. Retail sales charts would no longer be a useful indicator the way they were during generational transitions of the past.

This whole scenario feels like an endgame now. I've always said that this might be the last gen with 3 major players. If true, this will fuck NX from all sides, it's WiiU all over again, sorry Nintendo believers, but please explain to me what NX can do now to counter this and VR? (I'll have to add that this may turn me off from consoles completely, before someone pulls the fanboy card)

Sony is basically saying "all-in"

Does anyone else see this as just sort of being PS5 with backward compatibility to PS4? I feel like Sony has yet to fully deliver on the promise of great 1st party games for the PS4 to the same degree they delivered on PS3, and now this new thing is going to come and steal away resources, further dwindling down the 1st party game options for the console I own.
No because PS5 will have exclusives games that only run on PS5.

All PS4k games will run on PS4 fine.

It is the same product after with better experience.

True but on the other side.

If they don´t do it why should anyone buy the PS4K ?

=> It´s just crap no matter how you look at it ;-)

1) Support PS4 => why should I buy a PS4K
2) Support PS4K => FU Sony, I already have a PS4

Easy it will be 1, and when I buy a Ps4k people will moan about why its not native 4K and parity.

But for PSVR this will really help, especially for some games. Its basically a 970 in a ps4...hold me

Sure hope it isn't $499. I might be in at $399, but another hundred is a little steep when I've already got an old, scuffed up, noisy, but working PS4.

Very shaky about this. If done right it could be very cool but everything I just read sounds like doing it wrong wrong wrong.

They can't possibly be stupid enough to burn so many users like that though, it would kill them.

Are people seriously thinking of converting over from PlayStation gaming altogether? I don't know if I could skip out on Bloodborne, Uncharted, and God of War.

Uncharted is done with in a month, Bloodborne has come and gone, and I for one won't (and don't) miss God of War and its gutter tier protagonist.

Hmmm.. Assuming this is true, and if they also upgrade the cpu and charge 499 instead of 399 without the cpu boost, and along with buying PSVR bundle.. Wouldn't it be worth spending a bit more and getting a proper VR headset (with good res) and PC instead ?.. idk man, i hope arrogant sony doesnt re-emerge.

Not even remotely interested in PSVR running on oldschool PS4 hardware now.. I guess its just a matter of waiting for the dust to settle and see whats true and whats not.

OK.

Well, here's the thing, I'm not buying a new PS4 variant and a VR headset.

One or the other.

Sadly, I'll be taking native gamer performance over VR.

So, you know, I'm not sure who is losing out, since my existing PS4 will subsidise some of the cost of the PS4K.

So are all the people who were console only because of the supposed need for PC users to upgrade their GPUs/CPUs/etc every couple years for hundreds of dollars going to finally switch?

No reason for them to talk about it before they're ready with all the details. Uproar on gaming forums is not going to affect them.

Surely it's affecting confidence in the product they already have in the marketplace, though? Make no mistake: this news will be seeping out into the mainstream now.

If this is true, there are no more launch windows. 3-4 years, we'll get another doubling in perf.
Honestly I kind of expected it to happen, but I thought it would be upgrades for every 5 years. Expect consoles to start adapting the Apple model with new consoles every 3 years.

I still don't get the WHY behind this.

Sales are great, so it can't be that. Devs don't seem to be demanding this. 4K market isn't anywhere near big enough for this to be worth it yet.

**Is PSVR going to be a mess without this?

**Are they preempting/reacting to something Nintendo and/or Microsoft is releasing this year and trying to get a jump on it?

**Are they just being arrogant?

I don't get it. Makes zero sense to me.

For me to less details about the console so it's not true.
2x GPU? why no specific details, I'm sure the meeting was longer than you wrote.

Are people seriously thinking of converting over from PlayStation gaming altogether? I don't know if I could skip out on Bloodborne, Uncharted, and God of War.

This is a nice approach for me as someone who loves gaming tech but had to leave PC gaming for several reasons. Gaming on keyboards hurts my wrists, I get OCD about settings and can't just relax and play a game, plus I like a lot of series that are console exclusive.

I just hope Sony is smart about their messaging and goals for this. Market it around 60fps in games for enthusiasts and added media capabilities and I think it'll be a success.

This really fucking sucks. I guess Sony figured "They spend $1000 upgrading their phones every year. Why not their consoles?"

The return of Arrogant Sony.

Damn, I bought a PS4 at launch and thought for sure I'd get to play The Last of Us 2 on it. Now I'm not so sure. And even if it plays on both, I don't want the neutered version. I didn't buy a PS4 two years ago thinking "Gee I can't wait to have the next one of these come out before they deliver on the first-party games I'm excited for! I sure hope my console runs everything at medium settings!"

Except that the N3DS didn't become the standard focus. Is it that hard for people to understand lol.

Those who got an N3DS got screwed(unless they never own an original 3DS). What they got a Wii game port as an exclusive? Better performance for a WiiU game port? Come on. Please.

So you're just assuming Nintendo will do it right and Sony will fumble and burn a bunch of consumers. Got it.

This sucks for people who got their PS4 this year or last year, but honestly, this fall it's been three years since the PS4 launched.

Sure, it's shorter than the roughly 5-year cycle you'd expect... but come on, three years is like a decade in the tech world.

Additionally, if the rumours are correct, games will still run just fine on the normal PS4. They'll just have higher frame rates or better graphical effects on the PS4K.

Everyone who prefers the 5-year cycle can just hang on their current PS4s and will be able to upgrade when the next PlayStation (after the PS4K) launches in 2/3 years time.
