atm i have an rtx 4080 , 32 GB ram , r9 3900x

I mostly game at 4k and anything above 60 fps is useless for me , that being said i dont know which upgrade would be better , an rtx 5000 card or an 9800x3D ?

So what game exactly are you playing that's running on medium/high settings that you need that new tech boost? Especially with those specs

right now i can play all games at 4k 60 fps but there will be some really demanding games in 2025 like kingdom come deliverance 2 , stalker 2 already starting to push the hardware alot

My like 120 dollar 12400 trumps your 3900X.
You could even get a 5800X3D on AM4 and likely skip the next generation of GPUs too.

Your 4080 at 60fps isnt gonna be "weak" anytime soon.

Cpu 4 sure, u can always reduce resolution/settings/put on dlss to reduce strain on the gpu but once u are cpu bottlenecked u will be fucked, and hard, depending on what games u prefer there are already games that cant hold stable 60 with ur cpu and it only gonna get worse in 2025.
And from logical standpoint, current bis cpu aka 9800x3d should be around 500$(ofc its higher atm coz of stock issues, but it launched below 500$), while gpu upgrade for 4080 owner can realistically only be 5090 aka 2k usd...

But why upgrade

Seems like a waste of money, your current specs are good enough to play most games at high and 60 fps

5080 if the upgrade would be worth it , especially if they announce some kind of new DLSS exclusive to the 5000 series
Sounds like a pretty shitty upgrade to be honest. Even from a 4080 to a 5090 it sounds meh. Especially when you said you're happy with 60fps. Your card is great and will remain so. It's your CPU that might keep you from a consistent 60fps and you don't have to wait for 2025, there already games like that out.

You need a new cpu badly. That 3900x is bottlenecking the 4080 at all resolutions including at 4k. I'd go straight to a 9800x3d. The increase in performance you'll see will be greater than if you kept the same cpu and upgraded your gpu to a 5090.

"Stalker 2 is heavily CPU-bound, especially when you enter areas with multiple NPCs. In towns, I often ended up with 50% GPU load only, which of course cut frame rates in half, too. That's why for some of our testing I'm using a Ryzen 7 9800X3D, which does a fantastic job at avoiding the CPU bottleneck. On the other hand, I noticed that shader compilation at startup was much faster with the 14900K, which has more cores and threads available to perform that work."

Well, wait for the 5xxx benchmarks? Its too early to tell atm.

At 4K, the GPU is more relevant. But you don't go above 60, so its trickier :messenger_downcast_sweat:

It sounds like you don't even need an upgrade tbh.

A 3900x cant give you a locked 60fps in baldur's gate 3, space marine 2, and many more games. It's not a 60fps cpu at all.

i dont know , 60 just seems pleasing enough , anything above is a bonus
Honest question, have you ever played the same game at 60 and 90 or 120+ FPS?
Ever since i got my 144Hz display back then, 60 feels soo bad, everything below 90 is just a slog to me.

About the upgrade, get a new CPU, the 3000 Ryzen are really weak sauce, even back then they weren't the greatest for gaming (had a 3900X myself, upgraded to a 5800X3D and doubled my FPS in many titles like WoW).
Since your on AM4, you could just look for a good deal on a 5700X3D and switch to AM5 when the 10k Ryzen are out or so. At least that's my plan.

In the very short term, probably a GPU upgrade would help more in a few situations, this said, i'd still change the CPU first. Now, if you are looking for a 60 FPS experience, why would you look for the absolute best CPU in the market, which will also force you to change your motherboard, just get a 5700x3d that goes on sale for 150 dollars on Aliexpress for example, or a 5800x3d and you'll be fine for years.

i did play at 100+ fps , im not saying it isnt smoother im just saying that i got used to 60 , maybe its a weird eye thing , i cant explain

You know all those games you have in your Steam library that you dont play? You upgrading for them?

Or upgrading for the game you do play that runs at 240fps at 4k already?
