PS4K information (~2x GPU power w/ clock+, new CPU, price, tent. Q1 2017)

I think this is exactly how it's going to be as well.

The part where first party developers are targeting the higher spec is worrying though. I think people were looking forward to seeing Sony's devs push power out of the console and not have to get a new console in order to have the intended version of the game.

What do you mean "patch"?

The PS4 version of The Last of Us was graphically superior to the PS3 version, would that be considered a "patched" version?
Not, but let's take this example. Say you bought Uncharted 4 when it comes out in may on the ps4. If you get the ps4k, you can use the same disc, and a patch for the game will adjust in-game settings and what not to run at a higher fidelity.

That's what I'm getting from the "patched" comment.

Some older games could get patches for improved fidelity/performance on the ps4k as well.

They´re gonna sell the PS4 and PS4K at the same time. At least for 1, probably 2 years, until the PS4K price comes down. Then the PS4K will be the only one until the PS5 comes out. Games still work on both PS4s. The PS4 version will look and play as it would have without the 4K anyway. The PS4K version will look better/run better, still the same game.

Microsoft will do the same if we look at Spencer´s comments.

Nintendo will most likely do the same, if we look at Iwata´s comments about the NX being more like a platform and not just a console and handheld. With it being more like the ios/android environment. Also they´re not going to be the only ones doing regular 5 year gens when their other two competitors (blabla, not competitors, bubble etc.) are doing it.

I don´t see a downside. The games that you´re playing are being developed and then downgraded to your PS4 right now anyway. The assests are higher resolution in development than what you´re seeing in the end. They´re probably higher quality than what you´re gonna get on the 4K too. Obviously the case for multi platform games that are also on PC.

This post can't be quoted enough

I can't believe Sony is going to split the player base. Unless I'm understanding it wrong. Basically, some games will only run on PS4k? Like Deep Down.

Edit: I see the quote above. If that's the case, then I guess it's not so bad. Not going to buy one unless my original PS4 dies.

In the world where the PS4K does not exist:

Games are released for OG PS4, but they're highly downgraded versions of PC games, or if they're exclusives they're downgraded from the original assets / vision in order to optimise the game and get it to run on weak hardware with a poor CPU.

...so what's the problem here? If you're just a PS4 owner nothing has really changed for you. You're getting the same games.

Interesting view. The comparison with the ever evolving PC is something to consider, especially with Sony's recent exclusives being also on PC.maybe they see value in tracking alongside PC in performance (albeit always a step or two behind), and this could be something pubs/devs want

You know what else is going to be outdated in 3 years? That PC you plan on building this year.

Also love how everyone keeps pointing to Hyrule Warriors instead of the 100+ 3DS games that came out after the n3DS was released and run almost exactly the same on both systems.

Do you think your PC won't be outdated 2-3 years after purchase? Rude awakenings ahead.

Funny since I'm using an i7 at 4.1 ghz from almost 6 years ago and its doing just fine. If I didn't upgrade my 680 gtx from last year It would be 4 years since I bought it and it still eats through 1080p games.

The X1 and PS4 are already outdated, and it's only getting worse as time moves on with all the technological advances happening. You can see some games hurting from this already.

This is a necessary thing if you want the medium to move forward. And if you're inclined, newer games will still work on the older consoles, with less performance/graphical fidelity.

I seriously don't see how we can keep this generation cycle going without these console upgrades.

Games hurting? Are you serious?

The PS3s games started getting unbelievable in graphics as time progressed. Some studios haven't even finished their first games for these consoles. How can we say we've given games a chance to plateau?

This mid-gen revision is literally faster than some of its games' dev cycles.

That's the most hilarious part, yes.

Due to AAA game development cycles moving from 2-3 years to 3-4 years, our mini-hardware generations are actually going to be faster than game dev cycles.

But is it going to be multiple? I don't want 3 not even 2 updates this generation. This one upcoming box better worth more years than what we got now.

...YET.

Sony also sells 4K TVs. (and components for 4K TVs to other vendors)

They know what they are doing.

No they don't. "3D" TVs were a market failure, and Sony pushed that heavily.

I see no reason to believe 4K Blu-Rays will be desired in the same way DVDs or Blu-Rays were. The market has mostly moved on from physical media for video content. People are used to Netflix. 4K content will not be a selling point except for technophiles who have top-tier home theatre systems.

I will eventually buy a PS4K because just knowing that a game I care about is running better on a superior console just bothers the heck outta me.

This still sucks...

How has it not changed if exclusives also start being shitty ports?

You know they'll just push resolution and not frame rate. That's the most irritating part about this, I have no desire or need for a 4K TV for comfy couch gaming. I'd rather the bump in power be used to make games run better with less loading times, more objects on screen, longer draw distance, etc.

...yeah...I know and couldn't agree more, but I can dream, right?

The more interesting question for me out of this is how is MS keeping their box so quite? NOTHING has leaked out about that thing, other than that it apparently exists. Maybe they aren't as far along as Sony? Maybe Sony is trying to preemptively beat them?

I'd imagine MS is actually playing much closer to the chest with their revision given their position. Sony is the market leader, they can be brazen. MS is going to keep things quiet and, potentially, do everything they can to one-up Sony.

With this information out, MS is potentially in a good position to make some phone calls. In fact I wouldn't be surprised if someone reading this thread right now was making said phone calls.

This is depressing as hell...I feel like this generation has had no games to justify it's existence, and I still feel like I've been waiting for that amazing game that has made getting a PS4 worth it...and now they're already upgrading it making my current console feel inferior that I haven't been super happy with to begin with.

Fuck you Sony.

I am not sure whats the problem. this is the right thing to do. and I expect this to continue for the whole generation of consoles and new consoles as well.

I expect the PS5 to be an upgraded PS4k as well and so on that will let you play your current games. To be honest, I couldn't be much happier. if anything. I will not feel the regret of buying so many games and then knowing I will not be able to play them on a new console.

as long as your PS4 play those games as its intended, you shouldn't worry it. if you want to play the same games you already bought with a better graphics than your current console cant, then you can trade in and upgrade your system.

I am glad they finally went ahead with the Andriod / IOS /PC route . it should have been there since the PS4 and Xbox one was announced.

They´re gonna sell the PS4 and PS4K at the same time. At least for 1, probably 2 years, until the PS4K price comes down. Then the PS4K will be the only one until the PS5 comes out. Guys at this point in time, PS4 multplatform games run with "significant sacrifices" compared to their PC counterparts. I really don't get what the big deal is. If you're okay with things the way they are right now, then you should be okay with things the way they are when the PS4K releases. Games will run at the same fidelity ps4 owners are used to. They'll just be better on the PS4K.

These are good, reason filled posts. More options is never a bad thing, especially when you aren't being forced into said options and the people who choose not to partake will not see their experience change. Sony isn't phasing out the original models, quite the opposite.

What do you mean "patch"?

The PS4 version of The Last of Us was graphically superior to the PS3 version, would that be considered a "patched" version?

They're referencing the fact that the OP said that developers could potentially tap into the secret sauce allow use of the console's entire GPU for older games but it would require a "patch".

As far as a new "remastered" version, I highly doubt it.

The game you're getting is "up-resed" from a smaller resolution, it's not natively 4K.

That's the most hilarious part, yes.

Due to AAA game development cycles moving from 2-3 years to 3-4 years, our mini-hardware generations are actually going to be faster than game dev cycles.

Maybe this 3rd year revision was always the plan but the devs threw their toys out the pram when they found out?

They want to make the best looking games......and work on the most powerful hardware.

What a weird move by sony after the tremendous success of the Ps4. Game are already taking forever to to show up on the ps4 and now you're going to split the user base?

This makes no sense.

And right when I just got back into console gaming too. Luckily I mostly play niche games, which will more than likely not even be effected for quite some time. This sucks though, if this is the new trend I'll definitely have to stop buying consoles.

But is it going to be multiple? I don't want 3 not even 2 updates this generation. This one upcoming box better worth more years than what we got now.

I'm expecting a new box every 3 years with alternating names between full numbered iterations and incremental iterations.

I don't think the idea is to do a one-off faster upgrade. That would be odd.

The part where first party developers are targeting the higher spec is worrying though. I think people were looking forward to seeing Sony's devs push power out of the console and not have to get a new console in order to have the intended version of the game.

I think Sony's internal studios would be the ones most likely to ensure that the standard PS4 versions are particularly stellar.

This more or less confirms PSVR is going to be a very sub par experience on the current spec PS4. $399 for the headset plus $399 for the PS4K to run it to its potential and we have a VR device just as expensive as PC VR

That's what I was thinking. Might as well go PC VR?

Well this is unfortunate. I just got a PS4 last year and now I already need to get another console if I don't want my games to be technical disasters?

More likely than not I'll just not "upgrade" and refuse to buy games that don't perform respectably on the hardware I have.

This is going to fuck up so bad. Many outside this forum are complaining about the exact things we discussed here.

Who thought this was a good idea?

You must be ignoring the PC Space where a 290X can easily run modern AAA games at 4K around 30 FPS. IF this is truly a 2X leap over PS4 with sacrifices and developer focused hardware coding- it can do 4K 30 FPS wit hease .
That's just plain wrong, on multiple counts.

A 290X is roughly 5.6 TFlops. That's more than 3 times a PS4.
And it really doesn't do 4k in the average AAA game "with ease":

Sure, if you don´t want to, or can´t afford it, don´t buy it. You´ll still get the games you want, it will be supported for just as long as it would have.

As for trade in, sell it if you want now, wait for a deal, and you´ll pay maybe 100-200$ for the 4K.

Also OP says currently 399 :)

I JUST bought my PS4.

;_______;

Nah but, idk... At least from my personal experience I'm between a rock and a hard place. On one hand the types of games I favour, generally, maybe they won't benefit so much from the upgrade so I can afford not to. But I dunno... There's part of me who has that niggling need for perfection. I just don't want to pay the extra when that can be going to other things. Ehhhh.

If I do get it it won't be this year anyway since I'll just put my money toward NX, so screw it, I'll probably just move on and ignore the 4K. I won't be happy though!!!!!

You know, despite how stupid this is, I think I'd be okay with it if it only happened once per console generation. PS4-PS4K-PS5 - with a decent trade in program.

However, this merely seems like a trojan horse for eventually yearly revisions. Something that would drive me to PC gaming.

The bolded is exactly why people are upset. The odds of it just upgrading the visuals for new games, and assuming that the ps4.0 will continue running games as if it is the only box devs will optimize for strikes me as fantasy.

I hope I'm wrong, or I hope at least Sony communicates this clearly and has some upgrade program.

how is that upsetting ? sony wont leave 40 million PS4 users to dust. at this of this day this is a business company that makes money from software sales. the current PS4 will play the games as its playing right now maxing out the console.

IT WILL BE the base development for the games, the PS4k will only get lil extra upgrades after they reached the gold milestone development with the original game. this is not a fantasy this is a fact. and if PS5 is backward compatible with the PS4 ( and I believe it will ) then the PS4 will still be the base platform for the games. just like how most games on ios run on older devices.
