PS4K information (~2x GPU power w/ clock+, new CPU, price, tent. Q1 2017)

exclusive first look at the hardware.

Looks legit.

I was waiting for this, excellent. Only took 40 pages to do it though.

For PS4K, everyone is worried for naught. You will have PS4 population around 50 million by the time this releases. Sony and Devs will not want to mess with this. It will be just as with the current PS4/PC situation.

You get your Fallout 4/Witcher 3 at 60+ FPS and high res on PC and 1080p/30fps (at best) on PS4. You will still get the same performance on PS4 when PS4K comes out. Devs do this today with PC/PS4/Xbox ports and will do same when new SKU is out.

PSVR is a bit different animal as PS4 is really underpowered for it so there YMMV but still everyone will want to sell to the large install base if they can.

40 Pages?...StereoVsn confirmed to using the inferior 50 posts per page. That needs to be changed immediately....heathen!

This thread is moving too fast, but I'd just like to note that it really doesn't make any sense to take an estimate based on a AMD GPU architecture, use that estimate to multiply the FLOPs of an AMD GPU, and then compare that directly to an NV GPU.

It makes much more sense to compare it to AMD, which would put it at about Radeon 280X level.

I wonder if it is not just performance, but features too... bringing the GPU up to the latest DX12 feature level.

I'm a little curious right now if it's even "safe" to buy PS4 games for those that are buying the PS4K. Though, i guess if you're double dipping on the console you'd be okay with double dipping on the games.

Not sure what to think about this...having to buy a new 500 dollar(CAD) console every 2 years now to keep up performance wise is a small slap in the face...you dont have to but just the same...

Thread blowing up so fast hard to keep up.

I see some comments along the lines of "they were dominating so why do this?"

Are some upset about whats mentioned in the OP...or upset that you wont own the console with the best specs anymore?

Dont get me wrong I think it sucks if it goes this route too, but what are some ppl really upset about... Me being in the market for a new PS4....this works out fine for me. But for the long haul...Sony better be careful...

Has The Age of Sony been posted yet?

And while you're at it Sony how about giving it external harddrive support. Thanks.

I think this must be atleast a year away in terms of launch if Sony hasn't decided what CPU to put in. I'm sure they are debating the headaches of a Zen CPU. The GPU sounds like something that developers have qued them in and has stood the metrics of testing. I'm there day 1, I just need Bloodborne 2, Sony's Bend's title, Red Dead Redemption 2, and TitanFall running on Unreal Engine 4 ^_^.

You realize this is backing up my point more, not less right?

In a world where developers aren't properly optimizing for the strongest console currently out, what makes you think they'll do so for a lesser variant of that?

I think this needs to be emphasized over the prospect of dropping another $400-500 (which in itself is annoying). Both PS4 and Xbone were severely underwhelming out of the gate, but they could still host amazing games when enough time and effort were put into tailoring them to the hardware.

Yet what we've seen this gen is developers cranking the graphix so they can impress someone watching a TV commercial or a youtube trailer while letting the performance be a distant afterthought in many cases, just like during the PS3's twilight years. Devs were starved for power then, they got that power and it didn't make a shred of difference in terms of performance with a lot of "AAA" games being a shitshow in frame rate, and now they're getting even more power on a new iteration?

Anyone not upgrading to a PS4K better brace themselves if they care at all about graphics or performance on their "next gen" consoles. This is like cross-gen games all over again only now it'll be every game going forward.

Related info from a meeting we had yesterday was waiting for it to be approved before posting.

Price is currently $399.99 they were discussing a better CPU which would raise the price to $499.99 we were guaranteed the price will be no higher than $499.99 (He mentioned the CPU upgrade quite a bit almost as if they haven't really decided on a final spec could be a pricing issue.) also there is currently no plan for any type of trade in program for current PS4 users but that could change.

They stated that the GPU is twice as powerful as standard PS4 and much faster. They did not say exactly how fast but that is was running at a higher clock speed while being much smaller than the original.

It will have a 4k blu ray player and will upscale games that are not natively 4k.

Also there was talk of some sort of VR lounge for the media player app which is supposed to be getting a substantial upgrade.

It was stated plainly and with no room for interpretation that there are developers that already have development kits for the PS4K and that they are making games that will directly target and take advantage of the higher specs of the PS4K. It was also stated that these games will in fact work for the PS4 but with considerable sacrifices made to performance.

It was also made very clear that current games would not be getting any type of performance upgrades by being played on the system and any benefits to older games would come via patch per game and per developer. When asked if this was going to happen the response was "Its a possibility but doubtful with the exception of a handful of games."
We were also given a list of games that will be available at launch that will directly take advantage of the PS4K where the differences are and I will quote him "Significant."

People in your situation as bolded are in a real tough spot and I feel for you. I never believed the PS4 would be able to drive good VR content so I held off. It does feel like this is Sony's admission that people with my opinion were right. And yes, if I were you, I'd consider cancelling that preorder until we find out what the differences will be with PSVR on the OG or 4k consoles.

So yeah, I sympathise with people in your position but I just think the PS4 was never going to do VR justice. The Oculus and Vive would have forced Sony's hand eventually, especially if the Oculus runs on the new Xbox. So their hand was forced.

I wonder if MS would allow another storefront on the xbox.

I don't understand people who complain about having bought a PS4 in the last 2 years and a half. You had loads of games and PS4K users, if everything said here is true, won't get patches to get the game better on PS4K for all the games that you did play between the end of 2013 and the end of 2016 (or 2017). Do you see all devs patching their games 1, 2, 3 years after the release for a small user base ? And you will play the same games for at still 3 more years (from 2016). So it's basically a 6-year gen at least. That's not like the gen will end Q1 2017. Stop freaking out.

Unfortunately, if you stick to the current model, odds are the games will run worse than if this PS4k didn't exist at all.

This is what happens on PC, iOS, and Android when newer models make their way out.

Roughly. Though it depends on the developer. In fact I think games used to be way better at scaling to different PC configs than they are now... but that may be just me.

Bottom line is that when consoles got on the mainstream x64 technology path, this sort of change became a no-brainer.

When consoles used bespoke hardware there was no impetus to fund technology improvement outside of a 5 year cycle, now they are part of what the PC scene is doing it would be perverse to deliberately ignore gains made in the larger scheme of things over shorter time-frames.

Its not like compatibility is an issue, or the baseline set performance-wise by the PS4/Xbone is problematically low.

Now that I think about this more, I think I may just sell my PS4 and wait 3 or so more years, get a PS5.
You'd rather play NOTHING at all for three years than play something knowing there's a slightly better version of it out there? How does logic like this work?

Feeling really iffy about the "significant" line. God of War 4 on PS4K looking like a full gen leap above the game on the original PS4 would cause a lot of uproar from original PS4 owners.

A few improvements and more stability is fine, but anticipated games being made for the PS4K and then essentially down ported to PS4? Wasn't expecting that so soon (If true).

~2x the GPU power and faster? In a closed system like a console?
So with which PC graphics card can we compare all this?

Sorry if already asked. I'm currently reading through this thread.

I'm all for it but take a wait and see approach as I could not afford it anyway as I have a PSVR preordered already (which I will keep). Though I want to know how they will keep moving forward with this. I hope it will be "regular" iterations so you can skip an upgrade. And of course I want developers to use the additional power for all upcoming games because when I get PS5.0 I want these game to look the best they can.

Yes, I would probably have waited with the purchase of my PS4 as I got it 5 months ago in preparation for VR (and UC4), but I will still get my moneys worth.

Sony is dropping support of the PS4?

It's understandable that current owners are apprehensive about this news. But personally, I think it's a bit premature to assume that this automatically means that the base PS4 will become the poor man's edition of the platform. Depending on how this actually plays out, it could just as likely go the other way where early adopters of the 4K edition wind up looking like a bunch of rubes who are eager to jump on board the hype train to pay for overpriced new hardware that mostly goes ignored by devs. When assessing the long term impact of this kind of move, it could go well, it could go poorly, or it could just wind up being a pretty neutral thing wherein it's good for people who want the 4K features, but people who don't can still sleep well knowing that they don't really need to upgrade.

To sum that up in one sentence, I'm going to need some PS4 vs. PS4K comparisons of real software before I know how to react to this.
