PS4K information (~2x GPU power w/ clock+, new CPU, price, tent. Q1 2017)

It was also stated that these games will in fact work for the PS4 but with considerable sacrifices made to performance.

Beautiful. Why am I even going to buy a PS5 at launch knowing this is going to be done every gen?

Exactly! This is an opportunity to close the gap if you don't want to build a PC.

The gap is only gonna get wider with the new cards coming later this year.

I don't care about closing gaps. I want to be able to run all the games that came out for PS4 for a span of 5+ years, and now I'm not even sure if that will be the case. If its really this big of a jump, there's probably going to be PS4K exclusives. Or the difference will be so great in terms of performance like Hyrule Warriors 3DS that there are pseudo exclusives.

And miss out on all the console exclusives? Ok. You know that you don't have to buy another one. The games will still work.

But how long until games are just poorly optimized for the og ps4, or until they flat out make ps4k exclusives? This a slippery slope, we've barely even got into the swing of this gen.

I think this is going to push a lot of people away from consoles. I had mine for over 2 years, if wiki page is correct, so I likely have and will continue to get my moneys worth, but this would pretty much confirm that I need to become a pc first gamer. I just hope pascal is everything people are hyping it up too be, I will also be getting a steam controller for those games that don't offer native support.

This is primarily going to be for the Ultra HD player... I doubt that you will see anything different where games are concerned other than 1080p/60fps. That way backward compatibility is assured.

Also, a UHD player that plays PS4, PS3, and PS2 games? I'll just move the PS4 to the media center that has a 1080p projector, and the PS4K to the 4K TV. I'm ready

Fuck this shit if true. If I have to upgrade a platform every two years then it's much better value to spend that money upgrading my PC which runs games and is general purpose.

This completely defeats the purpose/advantage of dedicated game consoles.

Uhm no it isnt.

Yeah, about that...

these games will in fact work for the PS4 but with considerable sacrifices made to performance

Can't wait to upgrade. Bought PS4 at launch, and will preorder the new system as soon as it is available. I just got a 4K TV last Christmas.

Another poster mentioned how optimizing for each system would require more man hours. I would guess a game like Destiny would require less effort than most due to the artistic approach they took. Destiny 2 may change that though, assuming it won't be released on last-gen consoles as well.

I took that example for the very same reason this was one of the games that extended the life cycle of last generation which was way past its prime...

Who says you have to upgrade your platform? If you feel so invalidated in your purchase when something new and better comes out then you shouldn't have made the purchase in the first place.

This is bullshit. Consoles don't even acquire a worthwhile catalog in 3 years. The first year or two is all up-rezed cross-gen bullshit. Year 3 and beyond is when they really start to bloom.

Exactly this. The software coming out of the gates this cycle was garbage. Things are just about to hit their stride and the focus is about to be shifted to the next box

It seems that Sony is going all in on VR as their "thing". I have to think that this is being primarily done for VR purposes.

I wonder if MS goes down the same route - or opts to just go with something that is compatible with Oculus and does something else for the E3 reveal.

I think MS's big E3 reveal will be something like "all first party games are now auto-cross buy across X1 and PC".

A PS4 with 2x GPU/CPU performance isn't going to natively render anything at 4K except for maybe the occasional indie title.

In stupid person terms, how much of a performance increase are we looking at here? And will it severely affect games running on a normal ps4?

I know that is hard to quantify because developers aims are different but yeah what sort of gap are we looking at here?

Aren't people kinda overestimating the performance differences between the PS4 and PS4k? Even at 2x the power the games will be still in the same ballpark gfx-wise.

I think it is funny that those hate this idea because there will be PS4 owners getting a lower end version of the game and the PS4K folks getting a better version of games and then these same people say "Fuck Sony", "I am going PC". Well would it not be the same thing on PC? If you go PC, there will be PC players playing the same game with better resolution, better shadows, better frame rate, better AA solutions, unless all these people going PC will be building Titan X Rigs, which I doubt.

I think if it's true and they force/allow devs to target the higher spec it will be a mistake. It's a bad idea. The only ones who benifit are the niche who want a quick console cycle and the platform holder. It's just more work for devs and a middle finger to the existing install base that can't or won't upgrade.

ok so just 4k upscaling and not actual 4k native rendered games. That's silly but added GPU power is cool I suppose.
I think the " Will Upscale games not natively 4k to 4k" kinda indicates that there are 4k native games, GOW4K is probably one of them (like what I did there lol)
But this sounds like a big kick in the balls to 30+m users tbh and I just got a new 1080p TV because 4K is barely a thing yet and my PS4 from launch is still kinda new to me, now they telling me they gonna gimp my games because they'll be made for a 4K PS4?
Thats fucked up.

If they planned to have iterative consoles all along I wish they would tell us from the start.
During the Xbox One reveal, people were sniffing for anything remotely anti-consumer. People had already gotten fed up with DLC and GFWL and loss of backwards compatibility. It's partly why the Sony Too rumors gathered so much strength, because everyone was in full McCarthy Mode.

If Sony planned this from the start, promising a simplified "for the gamers" approach while still planning to cut the gen short with iterative hardware, they fooled us good.

Sooo, let me understand this: if you are a current ps4 users who are not willing to upgrade, they already got your money. If you are willing to upgrade though, they get it twice.

Then why not wait another two years after the PS4k release & get a PS5 for the same price?

You could absolutely do that, you will hear how your current PS4 is still very relevant and will get the same games.

This is aimed for those who want to close the performance gap with PC and have their games run better, as well as VR.

So in order to not "disrespect" someone who bought a console 3 years ago, those people who are adopting 4k TVs shouldn't have gaming or entertainment content available to them through a Sony console device for the next 3-4 years?

You do realize how that is a little unreasonable, don't you?

There is PC for that reason. Sony and MS should fully support those who trusted them and deliver the best experience you can get on their consoles. Your argument ends on the first title they announce as 4K only. Wait and see.

From the OP it sounds like this is what the PS4 should have been from the get go. I'm not really so enthused about being sold a PS4 and then have this come out two years later. This idea did not come out of thin air and they must have known about this for a while. They are well aware that people purchase these machines with the expectation that this is it for a good while and they were happy to let people operate under this belief and buy up their first edition. I'm starting to feel a little bit stung by Sony on this which is a shame because this new model sounds like what I would have wanted in the first place.

I understand that money is an issue for some, but nothing will change for you.. you will still be able to run the same games, albeit at a lower spec (which we would be getting anyway with the status quo).

How hard is it to understand that this is 100% wrong ?

It's very simple. When the new console comes out, devs will still have the same amount of ressources and now they have to allocate them between two consoles instead of one. So without the new PS4, everything was done to optimise the game for the console. But with the new PS4, they will optimise somewhat but most of the optimisation will be focused on the new PS4.

So no, it won't be the exact same. It can only get worse. Look at a game like Witcher 3 which really didn't run very well on launch. How would you think it would have ran on it if there was a PS4.5 which also needed some optimisation ? It's simple, PS4 would get the short end of the stick.

This is a disaster in every way. It's simply way too soon. They should wait 2 years and just release a PS5.

I love seeing developers perform miracles to get games running on old hardware at decent framerates. That's one of the absolute best things about console gaming.

Sure your games can look better on PC, but they got Last of Us and MGSV running on a PS3. Not a 2012 PS3 - a 2006 PS3.
Halo 4, GTAV, Rise of the Tomb Raider? Runs on hardware released in 2005 - that's amazing.

I'm not saying that won't happen with a PS4 / PS4K scenario but it's a lot less likely when the devs can just tone down some settings and say "If you want it to look pretty, buy the new machine".

I'd hate to see consoles go this way but it depends on the difference in quality and how often these upgrades come around. I buy all the consoles so new machines every 3 years is just too frequent for me to buy the latest and greatest. I'm honestly not sure what I'll do when these machines are released.

Honestly, this does not seem like a Playstation (SCE) decision.

This was a Sony Corp decision. The Same Sony Corp that thinks a new flagship Xperia Phone every 6 months is a good idea.

As a lover of new tech, especially Sony Products, I am looking forward to the PS4K.

But as I said earlier, as a gamer, this is a dark road which in the long run wont end well for anyone.

But how long until games are just poorly optimized for the og ps4, or until they flat out make ps4k exclusives? This a slippery slope, we've barely even got into the swing of this gen.

I think they should be optimized for both. The lower spec one being optimized to maintain playable frame rate while losing some bells and whistles. How is that different from the much worse situation on pc that you would be fleeing to?
