PS4K information (~2x GPU power w/ clock+, new CPU, price, tent. Q1 2017)

Time has moved slower this generation though. So many delays and remasters, not nearly as many exclusives and heavy hitters as you'd expect for a generation.

It really feels like its only now just getting started. I'd love to see the second and third wave of games made for this hardware spec. But they won't be made for *this* hardware spec, they'll play on this spec but only really shine on the next rev.

Time hasn't moved slower at all. Aaa packaged titles and game sku count is smaller across the board. This is the new Normal. Sux right?

How hard is it to understand that this is 100% wrong ?

It's very simple. When the new console comes out, devs will still have the same amount of ressources and now they have to allocate them between two consoles instead of one. So without the new PS4, everything was done to optimise the game for the console. But with the new PS4, they will optimise somewhat but most of the optimisation will be focused on the new PS4.

So no, it won't be the exact same. It can only get worse. Look at a game like Witcher 3 which really didn't run very well on launch. How would you think it would have ran on it if there was a PS4.5 which also needed some optimisation ? It's simple, PS4 would get the short end of the stick.

This is a disaster in every way. It's simply way too soon. They should wait 2 years and just release a PS5.

I can understand that concern, but I can only see these shorter increments becoming the norm (for both Sony and MS) of 1 or 2 iterations in between mayor releases.

The strategy with new iPhones is to jump in day 1 with the new and trade-in, sell the old right on release before the market is flooded.

We are spoiled here in the US but there are markets that pay a huge premium over US price for these consoles.

It's hard to see how devs won't incorporate "PS4K only" gameplay elements in order to compel people to upgrade.
I have a feeling that this will be the only upgraded PS4 we'll see this gen.

It'll just be a new model with 4k blu-ray playback, and maybe some hardware improvements which result in QOL upgrades like faster installs, rather than two tiered games.

How have sales of New 3DS only games done?

Eh, we'll see. I'm not saying it won't happen, but I'm convinced that anything but a small sampling of titles are really going to target the 4K hardware for meaningful improvements. But time will tell.

I don't care about closing gaps. I want to be able to run all the games that came out for PS4 for a span of 5+ years, and now I'm not even sure if that will be the case. If its really this big of a jump, there's probably going to be PS4K exclusives. Or the difference will be so great in terms of performance like Hyrule Warriors 3DS that there are pseudo exclusives.
Its not that big of a jump. The best part about incrementally jumps is the choice of when to upgrade. Now ps4.5 is comming out and you have ps4 already, you can upgrade now or wait 3 years for ps5. You can still upgrade every 6 or so years(nothing changes compared to previous gens), or every 3 if you can afford or choose(keep better pace with pc tech). Support would be a half behind. Ps5 comes out ps4 support is dropped( officially), Ps5.5 comes out ps4.5 support is dropped and so on.

I understand why some people are upset, but personally I'm excited by the news. The years with hardware launches are always the most exciting. I want everything to keep progressing and the long stagnation of the 360/PS3 gen was boring as hell. When PS4K launches I'll just buy the new one and sell the old one to take away some of the sting.

Also, as a PC gamer of over 25 years, I want to say that people stating that this is "just like PC gaming so might as well switch" are either only referring to a select aspect of it (i.e. money), or they don't know what they are talking about. While Steam makes things easier than ever, there is still a lot of tinkering and bullshit that comes with playing games on PC that you will not get from console gaming, no matter how often they iterate. If, at some point, consoles require you to edit .INI files and apply finicky community-sourced patches to games in order to get them to run right or crash less often, I will join you in declaring consoles pointless. I don't think that's happening yet.

It's hard to see how devs won't incorporate "PS4K only" gameplay elements in order to compel people to upgrade.

Devs don't get money for each 4K sold.

It would be in their better interest to make sure the other 40 million owners can also buy their game.

I think it's funny how people constantly complain about lazy devs, day 0 patches, bugs that they can't fathom how the game shipped with, and performance issues, but now that we have two targets, people are defending developers with well they'll do a great job optimizing for both targets.

Fallout 5 launches and literally isnt playable on PS4. Only on PS4.5

Well if they say the update will be significant then I will chose to believe that I guess. As long as I can keep playing all the games on my normal PS4 for a while longer and as long as devs dont completely stop developing for it...

Still this is all pretty confusing when you try to guess in what direction this takes the industry overall. As others have said, I hope they have some sort of trade in or discount for whoever already owns a PS4. Doubt it though. I think I will wait a year or so to see how things go before committing to the update or whatever its called.

Q1 2017 is great! I can spend roughly .06% of my bonus on upgrading.

Post your IBAN and SWIFT and I'll help you out. My 96 year old woman has just passed away, she was a dutchess. I'm incredibly sad and rich now. I think I can only get over this by spending tons on money.

Sooo, let me understand this: if you are a current ps4 users who are not willing to upgrade, they already got your money. If you are willing to upgrade though, they get it twice.

sony doesn't make money on hardware (or not much money on hardware). they make money on subscriptions and software. so if you are so put off on this that you jump to a competing platform like pc instead of upgrading to ps4k, then they get none of your money going forward.

It's either this, or continue to complain for years and years whenever a game comes out with shitty frame rates. I understand why some are mad, especially if they just bought a PS4 recently, but this is increasingly becoming the way tech operates these days, and it's going to be this or a handful more years of ports that don't run as well as they should. Sony and Microsoft definitely fucked up and missed the mark in terms of power, but when it's two years from now and the (probably) inevitable port of Cyberpunk 2077 needs 17 patches to get it to run close to 30fps, people are going to complain just as much about that as they are now.

Whatever... I'll just start putting $50 aside with each paycheck, and sell my old console when this happens, it'll be fine.

Time hasn't moved slower at all. Aaa packaged titles and game sku count is smaller across the board. This is the new Normal. Sux right?

And with iterative consoles, AAA game counts will shrink even more.

LOL. I can't wait to see how this plays out

Fiery, explosive failure and collapse of the AAA market.

Lol at people thinking Sony thinks anything if the NX... guys, it will be a long time until Nintendo starts taking any significant share of the market from Sony. Nintendo is basically surviving off from hardcore Nintendo fans at this point and, unless they really turn their shit 180 around, they're going to stay there until either they get bored or they're shareholders force them to go third party.

This is just Sony testing the market now that they are in the best shape they have ever been to find out if the console market can accept incremental leaps instead of whole generational ones just do that they can sell more machines and make more money. Which i find really stupid and hope they don't succeed at proving.

Which is why backwards compatibility is so important, and everyone knows it. Content will be sold, supported, sold again, supported more, repackaged one more time...

With the increased costs native 4K will bring a few years down the road, and with audiences not expected to get significantly larger on these boxes, well, this is it. This is the future.

Nope. This thread is embarrassing. If you honestly think there's going to be some mass market outrage directed towards Sony over this, or Microsoft for that matter when they inevitably reveal there's, then I'm afraid you're going to be disappointed.

Uh huh. We'll see.

In stupid person terms, how much of a performance increase are we looking at here? And will it severely affect games running on a normal ps4?

I know that is hard to quantify because developers aims are different but yeah what sort of gap are we looking at here?

Well, you could expect games that currently run at 30fps to run at 60fps with maybe a bit better visuals (things like shaders/lighting/particle count, etc.). Or you could stay at 30fps and ramp up the visuals quite a bit. Devs would have a lot more at their disposal. If the past is any indicator, they'll choose visuals over fps most of the time.

As for how this will impact the current PS4: the hope is that it won't. Games should look the same on the PS4 as they would have if the PS4K never happened, but YMMV depending upon the individual developer and how much optimization they're willing to do.

. It was also stated that these games will in fact work for the PS4 but with considerable sacrifices made to performance.

It was also made very clear that current games would not be getting any type of performance upgrades by being played on the system and any benefits to older games would come via patch per game and per developer. When asked if this was going to happen the response was "Its a possibility but doubtful with the exception of a handful of games."
.

And there we go, what I most feared.

This is absolute bullshit. A complete "fuck you" for ps4 adopters for the first three years, an absurd possible pricetag that undermines even now the slightest advantage that consoles had over PC. And with old games still running like shit, it's JUST THE INCONVENIENCE OF PC GAMING, NONE OF THE ADVANTAGE . And pushing developpers to basically ditch PS4 development in favour of the ps4k, offering shitty solution for early adopters.

And bet your ass you're still gonna have to pay for that online. Thanks for supporting us players ! Now shell out more money if you don't want to be left behind and feel like shit with that product that we now gonna make sure is obsolete after 3 years and a half. After all the dreamcast had as long a lifespan right ?

And the amount of corporate suck-up or people who just see no problem with this and are delighted to throw more money out is staggering as always on GAF. I don't think it was too much to ask for more milleage of our ps4s, especially when the first two years had almost fucking nothing. A handful of exclusives, very few good, most forgettable, and a slew of remasters.

This is basically an expensive, shittier ps5 (with at least backwards compatibility this time around), not a ps4k.

I must have missed the part where the release of the PS4K suddenly makes all PS4's in existence suddenly burst into flames.

I meant that it will become the worse version every 2 years.

Also one thing the OP doesn't make clear is does he mean GTSport, EVE and Robinson will be PSVR launch titles? or does he mean that these 3 "VR" games will take advantage of the PS4K when it launches?

The thing is, you get away with this once. Once you establish that it's the norm, then the cat is out of the bag and everyone expects it. So what's the point in hiding it the first time if from now on everyone knows this will happen?

Depends on the marketing strategy that Sony choses. They must feel that they will be able to make the original PS4 an enticing sku in terms of a cheap entry point to the platform. Leaving the PS4K as a premium sku. Exactly the reverse of what happened with the PS3. And it's indeed more logical to do so. As tech evolves and gets cheaper new iterations of the hardware should be cheaper/smaller or better performant at the same price point of the original versions.

But with that disclaimer out of the way, I will say that I'm not entirely convinced that it's fair to call current owners "early adopters" when we're closing in on 2.5 years of the machine existing. It will be at least 3 years old more likely by the time the 4K launches.

I think that's totally fair. However I think it's important to point out that half of current PS4 owners bought the console within the last year:
Code:
Jan 2014 4.2M units
Sept 2014 13.5M units
Feb 2015 19.9M units

Look on the bright side. At least BroForce will run smoothly on it.

Probably shouldn't buy it then, because the one in 4 years will be even better.

Yup, you could skip that as well, wait until stuff stops getting supported and incremental jumps amount to something significant.
Never get the 1st gen hardware though, you'll surely get shafted.
