For the sake of everything that is holy, STOP comparing this to iPhones.
Phones are for calling and texting and going on the internet. They are not made for resource intensive applications, the features are just there : features. They are an accessory to the more core usage.
Here we are talking about a completely different piece of equipment. You buy it with the promise that for the next N years, devs will do their best to optimise their games on his machine (because they have no choice, the hardware is fixed and the consumer doesn't have a choice). There is no such promise that comes when buying an iPhone. You buy it to make phone calls, send textsn browsing the web and playing with some apps. They don't promise you anything about the future apps because they are not the main point.
And with a PS4.5, that promise is violated.
I thought all of the bad PS3 era decision making went out the window in February 2013. Why introduce this 18 - 20 months before PS4 hits the five year mark? Might as well wait until the next system to fully integrate VR. Dumb as hell.
Welcome to the PC lifecycle console plebs

Its going to be funny as hell if this winds up fucking over everyone in the long run because as of right now everyone not for it seems to be all kinds of things from people like yours perspective Either way this will be a fun thread to look back on.Does it matter? How is it any different to PC being the lead platform for a lot of AAA games this generation?
Like I said earlier, drama queens. It's insane. The MO for GAF during these PS4k threads seems to be outrage first, logic never.
sony doesn't make money on hardware (or not much money on hardware). they make money on subscriptions and software. so if you are so put off on this that you jump to a competing platform like pc instead of upgrading to ps4k, then they get none of your money going forward.

What current AMD card is 2x GPU power in the current PS4's APU?
I hope they look the same to make it easy for a sneaky upgrade.

where? Just because developers will develop game for PS4K, it does not mean that they will shaft PS4... he was right, it is quite likely that PS4 will keep being the main target for years to come since most of the userbase buying games will be on PS4. Plus, since PS4K is more powerful, it is easier to develop for and needs much less work - which means that in the end PS4K users end up being shafted.
.We were also given a list of games that will be available at launch that will directly take advantage of the PS4K where the differences are and I will quote him "Significant."
I think no one at the moment has any way of realistic estimation of overall behavior of developers and publishers, especially since many of use focus on different niches within the medium.
I wouldn't rule out that an AAA game happens that is 720p20Hz on OPS4 and 900p30Hz on NPS4. Say, Battlefront 4(k).
I think this will allow for longer life cycles. Backwards/forwards compatibility will keep the PS4 relevant and sellable for longer. PS5 doesn't need to come as quickly now.Shorter console life cycles with longer development time for AAA titles... yeah this makes so much sense.
Sony have realised the PS4 isn't powerful enough for an acceptable baseline for PSVR, so you make the PS4K and hey presto, now you have a console that is powerful enough.
But is there any point?
I do like this

That doesn't make much sense. They've already shown what PSVR can do on PS4. At least they're making it "forward compatible" with PS4K with an upgrade in visuals/FPS.
this is bad for early adopters
A new God of War title Appears on Veteran Character Animators CV
What caught my attention:
Looking at these creatures the new project could be one of this option (in order of probability according to us):
- God of War Reboot/Remake
- God of War Spin Off
- God of War I Remastered or Collection (4K)
- God of War sequel with new protagonist and another Hydra
Sure, but why Hyrule Warriors Legends? Wouldn't it be more suitable with Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas?
Yep, I'm in the same boat as you. Affording this is no problem for me. Affording a PSVR, an NX, a PS4.5 and a Xbox One.5 is no problem. I'm worried more about the ramification this will have on the console industry moving forward. It affects devs, consumers may balk at the notion, there's so many things that could happen. It's a very risky move and not one guaranteed to make things better.
This so much.
Sony better have a really good sales pitch. A transparent and honest one too.
So... what if Microsoft doesn't release an XB1.5?
Would make things interesting.

This comparisons with phones, cars and TVs are fallacious and have to stop.
Sure it will, it will just be 900p and 30fps locked. PS4k will be 1080p/60fps with better shadows and image quality. 900p has proven to be a good step down for gaining performance and I don't see that changing. It is like many PC games, people drop resolution to gain performance (in addition to other settings). I really don't think Sony would be stupid enough to make PS4 versions of games run like complete shit, they will probably dictate a baseline like 900p depending on the game.
If we take one of the recent good looking games like The Division, on the PS4k it would be 1080p/60fps with better shadows and AA Solutions/relfections etc. while the current PS4 version runs at 1080p/30fps. It will vary on game, but I think Sony will be smart and mandate a baseline for the PS4 version of games.
So... what if Microsoft doesn't release an XB1.5?

I can understand people are shocked by it, but 720p 20fps games on PS4 and mass market outrage isn't going to happen, now matter how much a few members of gaf shout it from the rooftops. The next year or so are going to be something to behold
Except they've marketed PSVR for the PS4 and given gamers the impression a PS4 will do. Seems kinda shitty to get people excited and preorder one and then later on pull the rug from under them saying you have the wrong console.
Wow this is horrible. People who bought the ps4 this year might as well start returning it.
