PS4K information (~2x GPU power w/ clock+, new CPU, price, tent. Q1 2017)

This is such a weird move on Sony's part. I completely understand why they're doing it, but it's considerably frustrating. I'm inclined to think this will cut into PS4's momentum, and I'm bummed that I'll have to drop more money only 4 years into the console's life just to keep up to date and get the full benefit of games being developed. Then I'm inclined to wonder and even fear that they'll move on to PS5 only a few years later.

Seriously? Developers have been scaling graphics to varying performance tiers on PC (and console) for quite some time. Why is this so hard for people to understand that standard PS4 games will continue to run at the preferred resolution + applicable effects. PS4K games will get extra bells and whistles, higher frame rate etc.

People tend to find their version of a product obsolete as soon as the n+1 version of the same product is rumored/teased/announced/released.

What's Sony's motivation here? They're killing it with the PS4, why would they do something so risky that could potentially disrupt all of their gains in the console space this gen?

The only thing I can think of is PSVR. They've realised that the PS4 just can't drive it, but they're desperate not to be beaten out the door by the competition.

Why not dream big?

Nice!

4x the resolution = 4x the wedges.

That moment when you realize you still can't change your psn name, use folders or connect an external hdd and yet a new ps4 is coming...welp maybe it'll launch features for ps4k

apparently people think they will have to do a port for PS4K so I guess they thought that devs do a port for each graphic card and each cpu in the PC game.... no wonder PCs are so complicated, lol.

do you think that porting a game form PC to PS4 is as easy as just setting the graphics sliders to medium?

It was stated plainly and with no room for interpretation that there are developers that already have development kits for the PS4K and that they are making games that will directly target and take advantage of the higher specs of the PS4K. It was also stated that these games will in fact work for the PS4 but with considerable sacrifices made to performance.

Ha, I said this would happen, and people kept denying it.

This is Hyrule Warriors Legends all over again.

How shitty do you think they'll run?

Devs will be playing with fire (and lost sales) if they choose to make a game that is unplayable and unsellable to 50M OG PS4 users.

I'm thinkin barely 30fps (mostly around 20-25), with probably some serious graphical downgrades. Devs have gotten away with a lot recently with optimization issues even today. I don't think they'll try harder in the future. Some I think will run okay, but there's still a big chunk.

Like Fromsoft. Love them with all my heart but they're shit at optimization and Bloodborne, while an amazing game, is sometimes not far from running pretty badly in some instances. Now if they start targetting a higher end console which they'll already have problem optimizing for as it's usually the case (if any previous dark souls told us anything, although they might have gotten better with Dark 3 on PC. I yet have to try it), I don't have high hopes for a normal ps4 version. And there's a lot of other devs I think who would go down the same way. Especially in the console space where graphical power is often more important that frames. People expected a lot of 60fps with the ps4 already and that wasn't the case. I don't expect it for the ps4k. Plus if it's that much of a power gap with the ps4, the differences in general won't be unnoticeable, and a lot of ps4 players will feel like playing a lesser experience, being undermined in their purchase.

Like someone above me said simply: "PS4k won't suddenly make devs good". Optimization is not just a hardware issue and so far still a majority of dev think very little of getting the best of each platform

What?

Q1 2017?

After the 2016 Holiday season?

That's insanity, this news will wreck vanilla PS4 sales prospect this holiday season, unless there's a steep price-cut to go with it.

PS2 sold about half of its total LTD sales after PS3 was officially revealed. PS4 is mainstream enough that especially as long as these PS4K news are unofficial as they are now there is going to be pretty much zero effect on current PS4 sales. This pretty much also confirms that there will be indeed another price cut for vanilla PS4 this fall (like most people also expected).

These leaks make me think they're gonna have to clear the air within the month. This is gonna huRt the brand and sales until they make things clear.

So we went from a possible upgrade for 4k media play to a console that has has literally double the power of the ps4 and it's not a ps5 but a fucking incremental upgrade? Lol okay...

How is that different from PC? PC has to accommodate older and many more configurations.
It has all the disadvantages of PC (unoptimized software and frequent updates to play games properly) without the advantages (cheaper games, upgradable hardware, free online, mods, last gen wheels and controllers being compatible, etcetera).

It's just a Sony proprietary PC.

The hardware arms race is back!

-Sony: PS4K
-Microsoft: new Xbox One model, possibly an upgradable console.
-Nintendo patents for the Supplemental Computing Devices to improve performance of their next home console (why would they even patent something like that if they didn't give a damn about specs?)

The only one that's not officially confirmed is PS4K.

Phil Spencer himself mentioned new Xbox One hardware and Nintendo's patent (the patent itself anway) is real even though it's not confirmed to be part of the NX itself yet.

Not to mention VR, the big three: Oculus, Vive, PSVR.

What a time to be alive and a gamer.

just like there is a policy that every PSVR game has to be 60fps, there will be likely a policy that every PS4K game has to work on PS4.

They will likely announce it when they announce PS4K so people can stop imaging crazy scenarios where developers will for no reason at all decide not to support PS4, and decide to bankrupt their company since they developed for 1m users instead of for 41m for extra 1% of development cost.
That policy, if it will even exist in any form, will be dropped the very same second a new AAA VR title that can't hold even close to 60fps on the original PS4 hardware.

If we see a significant number of PS4 games running like absolute shit because the devs targeted the higher power of the 4K and treated peformance on PS4 as an afterthought then that's it, I can't see myself buying a console again unless maybe they become properly modular so upgrades are easier and less expensive.

Don't understand the fuss. My release PS4 will still work with all games, right?
It is nice that there is an alternative for people who want to get a better experience.

This is so confusing.

Surely they need to announce this at E3 2016. But at the same time, they cant announce it there and release it only in 2017. It has to be Holiday. But then there is also PSVR in October. PSX announcement would be too late, people want to know about the new PS4 before chosing the "old one".

HOW WILL THEY MANAGE THIS DILLEMA???

Will they really ?

Because Skyrim PS3 sold A LOT

A friend of mine falls silent whenever I say how Skyrim is considered one of the worst running ports on PS3. He doesn't understand the technical side (or his own eyes, I guess). He says its fine, looks amazing, plays great, etc.

So yeah.

I'm a sucker so I'll buy it but holy shit I support the idea just not this soon, another year would be good for me about halfway through the gen

Correct. Some people need to know they are playing the best version of the game possible while pretending that high end PCs don't exist and will still be the top end anyways.

There is a difference between games working on PS4, and them working properly. When developers start targeting PS4k/high end PC hardware, PS4 ports will suffer.

Usually it takes 3 consoles for a company to be complete goddamn idiots. Like Sony with the PS3. MS with the Xbone.

Sony hasn't even waited a full gen to throw their lead away. God job salvaging your gaming division only to kill it dead 2 years later. Goddamn. What fucking morons.
