PS4K information (~2x GPU power w/ clock+, new CPU, price, tent. Q1 2017)

PS4 / Xbox One CPU, Jaguar @ 1.6 / 1.7 GHz, is a bottleneck, devs have talked about this. Ubisoft showed how they were doing stuff with GPGPU compute instead of on the CPU with AC: Unity at GDC 2014.
Wait, Jaguar is a bottleneck because it's not a flops/SIMD-centric processor like Cell (SPUs) was?

GPGPU is the evolution of Cell SPUs. We don't need CPUs to do these kinds of tasks (parallel number crunching).

I guess I can see the case for this when we have a fair amount of multi-platform games struggling by on current gen, but it is aggravating to know I would have to spend another $400-500 to be up-to-date with console hardware.

On the upside, I've got a large enough backlog to last me more than enough time until these new systems drop in price.

An r9 290, a 3 year old card, is 4.8 tflops, and can handle 4k 30 fps. Architectural improvements and coding for only 2 sets of specs (optimization), should comfortably allow a 2x as powerful ps4 gpu to do 4k 30 fps, with modern aaa titles.

The R9 290 is also a massive, 512-bit GPU. You gonna cram one of those into an APU as well? It also barely hits a 30fps average in a lot of games, many it falls below. Crysis 3 = 21fps average.

Details matter. Again, 4K expectations = nuts

......fuck. Well, I guess I'll be canceling that prebook on the PSVR bundle and putting it towards PS4K. :/
Wasn't gonna budge unless certain games were exclusive to it, now that we have a potential confirmation that's the case, and GoW 4 at that, I have no choice.

Not really happy about this.

I keep thinking how are they going to announce and do the marketing for this.
If they announce at E3 and it launches on Q1 2017 it will hurt PS4 OG Sales.
If they show how enhaced the 4k editions will be they hurt PS4 hard n soft sales. If they dont people will see no reason to upgrade and/or buy the 4k instead of the OG.
I believe if they cant be clear in their message things can go so wrong they can destroy the whole work they made to make PS4 a "beast".
I ll go further if this go wrong I can see all consoles and AAA productions going into dark times very fast.

If done correctly I could get behind it. Just make it so all games can be played on the original too, to an acceptable level. GOW4 just looks better on the 4k. GT sport is playable on both, but if you want it in vr you need the 4k. Leave it up to the consumer if they want to pay for that little extra power. Then in another 3 years we get ps5. It'll just replace the slim models we usually get.

My biggest worry is devs not having time to learn the hardware. I love seeing what the wizards like ND can do given time with set hardware. And a trade in policy would soften the blow.

what i take from this thread is "if i cant have it you also cant"

Overreact much?

I honestly don't see what the big deal is. Are people afraid of change? As long as your PS4 still plays games that are optimized for this PS4K, what's the big deal?

Maybe this will help people understand why people are freaking out.

It's the uncertainty this brings to the table.

- Does this extend the generation?

- How many iterations are we going to get in a generation?

- Do we even have generations anymore?

- How is this really going to affect games short term? Long term?

- PSVR isn't even out and performance is much more critical there and they're already talking about versions enhanced/targeting PS4.5? What does that mean for this new unreleased platform?

This brings a lot of questions that didn't exist before and it breaks expectations that comes with consoles. There are so many unknowns that no matter how positive you may be on this, you just don't know if everything will play out to be good. There's good reason to be concerned at this point with so little info that we have.

Because optimization doesn't magically happen. A game developer can focus on optimizing for one platform or another, but if they want to do both at the same time it's going to take even more resources.

The likelier scenario is that if the PS4K is successful enough, that the "regular" version will be on PS4K and a severely gimped down-port will be on PS4. Think Hyrule Warriors Legends 3DS vs Hyrule Warriors Legends new 3DS.

PS4 = 1080p30
PS4.5 = 1080p60 (same graphics settings)

It's supposed to be 2.5-3x more powerful, so yeah...
This won't happen for the most part. The majority of AAA devs are all about them shiny graphics, and every time they will sacrifice performance for better graphics, especially when they will tout out that new graphical shinyness on their marketing materials.

Say this is true, I wonder how marketing for the games will look like, will they show the difference between the PS4 and PS4K versions, or just use PS4K footage with a small disclaimer at the start/end.

They = developers and publishers

Look at COD BO3 last gen port. It runs worse than previous COD titles in the same consoles. The countdown for the same happening with PS4 games starts when PS4k launches.

Running on 1/16 th of the memory on hardware that is something like 10-20 % of the power.

Lets not also factor in the fact that Ps4 and Xb1 are X86 and easy to develop for, old gen not so much.

But also most of the sales are on current gen, last gen is a small percentage now.

In 2017, the OG Ps4 with 50 million owners will still be the vast majority, so lets face it, Vanilla Xb1 and Ps4 will get most focus from software easily in 2017.

I hope MS releases a machine even more powerful, and Sony gets the short end of the stick again.

And in that VR event they said that having the same machine was a plus for the PSVR, I find it funny now in retrospect. Shit's done on the OG PS4 when the PS4K is out.

So it's ok for Microsoft but bad for Sony?

Didn't your idol Phil Spencer tell you people, who wish ill on the competition are not real gamers?

Honestly, I don't think we need better IQ than Uncharted 4's IQ.

Video game development cost is already too high...

Naughty Dog may have the luxury to get 60fps if PS4K is really powerful.

But other developers will want to have Uncharted 4's IQ, and getting a stable 60fps won't help them achieve that.

Fallout 5 will run like shit in every platform.

PS4k won't make devs good.

I am even afrait it will make some of them even lazier.

Not if they announce some kind of official price drop due for fall. A bit before the PSVR release... :P

Why is Sony taking notes from Apple?

Just because you can bring out a new version of your system every 6-8 months doesn't mean you should....
And they aren't. 14nm is making this possible, for Sony and whoever wants to build a game console. If there was ever a time for a disruptive competitor to come into the market it would be right now with a 2x more powerful system in the same price range that's easy to port to.

If these machines plan on launching in the same time frame with a similar thermal limit, neither one will be 10-15% percent more poewrful than each other, and the differences would be much smaller than PS4/XB1.

Yes, but Uncharted 4 IQ is already too high. Why do we need more than that? I think it's plenty enough for bullshots.

Don't understand the fuss. My release PS4 will still work with all games, right?

i'm guessing most games will work on both PS4s. but as the gen grinds on you'll see the old PS4 getting phased out as PS4K exclusives trickle in.

way i see it this thing is essentially PS5, they're just trying to straddle "cross gen" a little longer this time.

The shit part is, I am such a shill I will buy this crap. T_T

Edit. Actually I might not. I'm getting older now and games aren't what they used to be.

Say this is true, I wonder how marketing for the games will look like, will they show the difference between the PS4 and PS4K versions, or just use PS4K footage with a small disclaimer at the start/end.

Nothing will change in this regard. They will just show games off in the best possible way and only closer to release or at release will you see the differences when people get a hold of them.

Easy enough

Announce the PS4K at a high price. $399-499

Announce PS4 Slim with a big price cut. $249-299

Different customers.

"significant sacrifices to performance" is incredibly foreboding and was exactly what I was hoping not to see. THe idea that this would make the PS4 second class and offer exclusive content/experiences is precisely what I did NOT want to see. Whelp. This seems like such a fucking horrible idea especially given the launch of the PSVR platform mere months earlier. Not a fan of this and what it means for the console ecosystem going forward AT ALL.

It's fucking crazy that this generation started with so much uncertainty in the market, and now confidence has swung so hard the other way that console makers think people will be in for phone-like iterations like this so soon. I'm curious to see how this goes, that's for sure.

i work retail and i can tell you that this new ps4k will only sell to people who want PSVR, 4k media, or hardcore gamers who want the best. Other than that i dont see parents buying a $499 ps4k over a $299 ps4. They're going to think hmmm our son doesnt have that $499 psvr or a 4k tv so theres so reason to get the $499 ps4 if hes not going to benefit from it. I think its great that the people who want the absolute best gaming experience can pay the extra to get it and people who just want to game in general at a good price can get it as well and buying the same ps4 disc will work on both consoles. im giving sony an A+ for this move

At first, I was planning on buying a PS4 this year, but now with this news...I may be holding out for the 4K PS4 instead if this is really true.

I just hope that all of the games that have been released on PS4 so far will work on this new model.

I hope MS releases a machine even more powerful, and Sony gets the short end of the stick again.

Not seeing that happening. I believe MS will try to aim to be the cheaper option for the average consumer with those new systems.

I think the industry skipped to 14nm, there is no other option.

I would like to think this but those with more knowledge have suggested it wouldn't really be possible to do 14nm @ ~1 million units a month plus it would be very expensive.

If the release is March 2017 then they would need to ramp up production this year.

People suddenly glamouring 60fps.
What happened to the '30fps is fine, 60fps is too gamey' folks?

Steady 30 FPS is fine, but 60 FPS is nicer to have. Us console peasants want nice things too.

Why would they expect to sell 12 million Ps4k a year if its the up market model ? Surely people will still buy Ps4 and maybe 10-20 % will go for the 4K model.

Remember this is an enthusiast model.

So devs have the devkits already but they still don't know which CPU to put in?

Games developed around the newest machine? a home version of the new-3DS shitfest?

And all this to allow people to play on their (outrageously laggy for gaming, unless you have the top of line) 4k Tvs?

#teamfake. And if true, I will say goodbye to sony as I did with this gen's N handhelds. There's no way such shady practices should be encouraged.

Anyway, all this could as well be a well-built clickbait story feeding off the negative response it generates, and news outlets just started copying each other or "independently" confirming things here and there.
