It absolutely changes things for OG Ps4 owners to basically get a cross-gen lite experience for the last few years of the lifespan, and it absolutely changes PSVR if we know that soon after launch devs will target the more powerful hardware for it.

Also, I find that it's okay for Sony to do this, however, it does bring up a couple things. If this becomes a normal thing, it makes PCs even more enticing for people to get on, especially when all you really need to do is upgrade the GPU more than anything. And two, I've seen people complain about a new console 3 to 4 years after the original release, yet there are people that will pay full price iPads/iPhones every year that cost more than consoles ever would.

I really don't think competition with the PC on tech was ever a goal of Sony's. I mean, that would be impossible. Long, long gone are the days when a $400-$500 console would rival even a mid-tier gaming PC.

I know Nintendo has done it but the 3DS new or old is not exactly sold on powerful graphics.
The annoying thing to me is that games will come out for the new system that are not properly designed for the PS4 I have. Maybe have the B team working on them or even a different developer. Also as generations get into 5th, 6th , 7th years, developers learn new tricks and how to get the best from the systems and things improve. Just can't see that happening now.

Except, you know, people reasonably thought the Ps4 would get a 5-6 year lifespan of games targeted at its hardware specifically, not 3 years and then a cross-gen experience for the next 3 years.
Because look at how bad the ps3 ports became after the ps4 came out. 3 years cycle is too short for consoles. Games take 3-4 to make and now they would take longer to make than a console generation.

Yeah dividing your userbase is a bad idea, and I'm not gonna buy this. If the games on ps4 turn to shit I'll stop buying them and play elsewhere.

It's nothing to do with that. If simply having the most powerful PC was the issue then PC is the way everyone would have gone.
This is to do with buying into a console expecting it would have a 5 year cycle and that each game from first to last will work to fullest of it capabilities. Now we know that developers will be working with a higher spec, mostly likely due to PSVR, and therefore one group, the group who have made this launch so successful, is left with a 2nd grade standard.
I'm frankly amazed that people don't understand that. Sometimes it's very much like Sony can do no wrong even when make anti consumer moves like they are at present.

In what way? Why is Sony beholden to enforcing some kind of parity in order to keep the illusion of "the most powerful" in place. Why does Sony have to help push a static environment, holding progress and innovation back to appease those people who suddenly don't feel secure in their buying decisions?

As I see it, this whole situation is already splitting the userbase, in a way.
I think one key reason why people are so upset with this news is because of the long-held expectation that a console will remain fundamentally static throughout the entire generation.
You don't see that problem with other electronics like smartphones.
When I first heard of Infinity Blade on iOS, I was hardly surprised to find out that it didn't run well on older iPhones, and that I needed to get a new phone to run it well.
What baffles me even more then is that consoles are so much cheaper than smartphones, so theoretically people shouldn't be complaining about upgrades like this at all.

I don't remember ever getting that guarantee.
PS4 and Xbox One users were already getting a "cross-gen" experience since day one. These systems were already trailing behind PC upon arrival, with ports that only really justified themselves if the PC versions were on fire. Atleast now, console-exclusive users won't necessarily be bogged with lesser experiences if developers approach this right.
I actually wonder if it was designed to begin with to be incrementally upgraded. Various hardware choices make that easier.

Where is stated that the PS4 won't get games until that point? Even with the PS4K available.
Where do you put your cross to acknowledge that your new piece of hardware will get content over a specific period of time?
You don't have a right nor the security that your platform of choice will deliver content for a specific amount of time. But I acknowledge that it is convenient to know that.
Besides that, who thinks that they won't deliver new content for their regular userbase? This is far too stretched, imho. You'll get exclusive high fidelity content on PS4K and the things you are used to know on your regular PS4. They will never drop their 30-40m userbase and hope they will build up the same amount of customers within a short period of time.
IF that is still a problem I don't see other problems than envy.
Now matter how you look at it there is nothing be worried about as a regular PS4 user.

Again, it doesn't have to mean that. It could mean that both will run the same game at around 1080p30, but while the old PS4 will do it at equivalent to low/medium PC settings, the PS4K will manage high/maxed (which a really good gaming PC might run at 1080p60 or 4K30).

You're naive if you believe this.
Devs will naturally start targeting the more powerful hardware and then the OG Ps4 will get weaker and weaker versions. I bet God of War 4 on Ps4 would look and perform worse in a universe where Ps4.5 does exist vs. one where it does not. Because if there is no Ps4.5, devs will target regular Ps4.
Last of Us would not have happened the way it did on Ps3 if there were a Ps3.5.
It's better than dealing with 1.5 minute long loads in Witcher 3. Even if this is purely a bump for the halfway point to justify VR, it's a bump that could atleast make the remaining stretch of this gen far less painful.
The architecture allows simple scaling. The SPE fuckup with the gimped RSX was a different situation. That is why it is now feasible to add incremental hardware upgrades.
The problem is that you feel degraded to a 2nd grade standard. That is the problem I've stated. The PS4 will get their content as far their capabilities reach. It is simple to scale down the experience from the same architecture. This works with smartphones, computers, televisions, .... and with consoles it starts being a problem? Come on.
Why should someone need the new model? Why is the PS4 suddenly 2nd grade stuff and won't give you people your shallow premium feeling anymore? People that will enjoy a better experience can invest in that for everyone else nothing should change.

If a better model is gonna release in a few months I don't see the ppl buying a PS4 in xmas instead of waiting for a more powerful PS4K +100$ even if you don't have a 4K TV

You are buying the promise of being taken care of by sony or microsoft on cheap outdated hardware. Considering that I could only afford a similar spec PC, that's a plus for me.
In this scenario power considerations are just a part of a bigger picture where certification, patches, peripheral compatibility probably means much more for the end user.
These rumors of a PS4K threathen the very core of this ideas, because that implies that this promise of being "taken care" is ended and moved to a new set of costumers.

Most games have been 1080p, but there have already been outliers, and more so when it comes to framerate fluctuations. It just feels like after the PS4K comes, the narrative will change that all of it's due to PS4 being neglected, eventhough many have stated that the resolution will go down towards the end of the gen even before these rumors.
Funnily enough, many people have complained about the lack of power during the past 2½ years, yet now people are against it when it's being offered to them. If this generation will last six years, I think a power upgrade in the middle is not that bad idea. That's coming from someone, who bought the PS4 at launch. It won't affect my purchase decision regarding the PS5 at launch either, as I certainly won't be waiting three years to play the games, especially when most of the pre-upgrade releases aren't likely to benefit from it, as mentioned in the OP.
I'm not either, but if theyre using similar AMD GPU and CPU, the same methods should probably apply to both systems. It's not like comparing PS3 and PS4 versions of multiplatform titles, where the hardware is completely different, and the difference in processing power is far greater as well.

I'm not sure your load times would improve...I may be out of my depth, bu isn't that about Ram? And the Ps4 isn't slouching there with its 8gb of pretty fast ram.
