PS4K information (~2x GPU power w/ clock+, new CPU, price, tent. Q1 2017)

The best part about all this? Regardless of what your personal opinion of it is, I can almost guarantee you that A: most people on here swearing off Sony and consoles forever will be there day one, and B: this thing is going to sell like crazy.

Anyone who thinks otherwise, especially on that last point, is deluding themselves.

Of course. Look at the Xbox Elite controller and how the peasant crew showed up with their torches and pitchforks when the $150 price tag was revealed. We know how that turned out. This thing will sell like hot cakes just like the PS4.

In other news, not a single VR related thread on the front page of neogaf right now.

All this Sony and MS news plus gamergate hubub has stolen all the thunder.

It's a shame they used the word "sacrifices"... in reality any of these games that were going to come to PS4 would look the way they were always going to look, and the PS4K version will have improvements over and above that. Now everyone thinks that hypothetical future PS4 games will somehow be gimped because of PS4K when they will look exactly how they would have looked on PS4 should PS4K never have existed.

As soon as you give a developer more Power, they're gonna use that for sure.
I don't think, that every game is gonna look exactly the same, as it would have, if there weren't a more powerful PS4.
Laziness is the Key, if you have it, you don't have to do the tweaking anymore for the old system.
Jaggier framerate?
If it doesn't please you, just buy the upgrade..
Nintendo is the best example, or better Hyrule Warrior Legends.

AMD probably just went to them both with their newest chip and made a pitch along the lines of "well, the other fella is doing it. you wouldn't want to be left behind would you?"

wouldn't be surprised if both the platforms are nigh identical, albeit in different boxes with different walled gardens, at which point you're already halfway to making your order for a new PC because you're not an idiot.

Or because you value the simplicity/ease of use of a console - which is why I game on a ps4 primarily over a pc.
And you want the best graphics/most horsepower you can get in a console - why I game on ps4 over the xbox one.
For me an enhanced ps4 is perfect. Day one.
So fuck off with calling people idiots because of the platform they choose to game on.

Yeah, that would be insane.

Maybe I'm overreacting.

Everyone it's okay to be pissed or feel betrayed (I know I am a little bit) about the purchase of the current PS4 or XB1. Just imagine that you are now at Kaioken x2 and that with PS4K/XB1.5 you could get to Kaioken x4.

And again, I agree with you, I'm sure PS4 can handle FFXV at a very stable 30 fps (the game is not that impressive IMO, especially this demo). But, if Square can't optimize it (because of the Luminous Engine or whatever), what can we do about it? What if the only way for them (the easy way probably) to get it to 30fps is more power? Again, not everyone have the time, money, energy and skill to optimize a game properly. In this case, the only solution is more power.

But in that case we just go down the PC road and devs stop caring about optimization that much and just hope that the better hardware console can handle all their developing shortcomings through its power and as far as the weaker console, that port will get shafted like there is no tomorrow. They will have the excuse ready: "there is a better version out there, upgrade your shit".

At some point as a collective we have to be honest with ourselves, there has to be an acceptance that in order to continue this hobby, recreational activity, whatever it means to you, it is an expensive thing and we have to play by the rules that the makers of these experiences we enjoy set. Also these entities are businesses and the only way they stay alive are by making money, if there were any other way im sure we would have figured it out by now. It's just the way it is everything goes through changes and we don't really have another option if we want to continue to have the latest and greatest of what these things have to offer than to opt in. The choice to continue these endeavors are our only say and power.

Of course. Look at the Xbox Elite controller and how the peasant crew showed up with their torches and pitchforks when the $150 price tag was revealed. We know how that turned out. This thing will sell like hot cakes just like the PS4.

I have a small feeling (no guts feeling though) that this could actually happen. With good incentives or trade-in programs with the retailers, people could actually jump the shark like wolves on sheep.

The more I think about it, this upgrade is the perfect storm of pressures for Sony.

1) 4K Blu-Ray spec gets finalized and players are just hitting the market. The legacy of PS3 as a cheap Blu-Ray and the PS2 as a cheap DVD player surely influence Sony to release a 4K capable media machine in the PS4K.

2) PS4 is a huge and much cheaper entry way into VR, but could be a perception that it is not in the league of the Rift or Vive. To bump performance, bump the PS4 into the PS4K.

3) AMD is getting set to release efficient and more powerful architecture. Sony can take advantage of it to accomplish #1 and #2.

I just don't understand why they don't give users the option to tweak graphics settings.

If they are going to become PCs, then you need to give consumers the same benefits or else it's just poor value.

The PS4K is supposed to be a 4k capable media device, not a PC. Why do people still try and compare the two?

Yes, you are right to some degree, but you don't see me moaning and complaning over Sony ITT, don't you? I'm mad at myself, true, and I came here to express that I will learn my lesson but I also brought up some arguments early on until we hit the "iphone", "but PS4 will still play the games", "git gud aka find another job" loop.

I'm the one to blame, 100% correct. I came to the conclusion that consoles are no longer my ideal gaming plattform. Plain as that. The PS4K's existence will just seal the deal for me.

Now watch some fellow Gaffers jump on me "so you're into PC gaming because you like upgrading hardware every year". yadda, yadda, yadda

As long as you're not one of the people believing that with the ps4k, ps4 games will now run like shit and thus, making the purchase of one worthless, we are fine.

Console gaming is shrinking fast and hardware providers should take measures to increase revenue and keep customers interest high, while still trying to not increase developing costs. The whole purpose of evolutionnary consoles is not to gimp and fool consumers, it's to extract even more value from those who are willing to pay with more expensives options who would help financing more expansive and interesting projects for everyone.

I'm getting the same vibe from the argument as with the "Remaster" debate, where people were complaining that Remastered version of previous games are gimping develomment of new ones. In reality, all those measures are taken because otherwise, publishers wouldn't have suficient funds to make new impressive games. As long as it's optionnal and people paying the high price fo those upgrades are willing enthusiasts, it's a good move for the industry and everyone should be happy.

If Uncharted 4 is as big and beautifull as it is, it's thanks to the Uncharted and TLOU remasters. If you still will get impressive new games on your OG PS4 late in its life cycle, it will also be thank to the success of the ps4k who helped cut development cost and make your ps4 version a no brainer.

I play more single player games nowadays than multiplayer ones, so for me it wouldn't really be worth it. At that price I'd rather just upgrade my PC.

I dont think there will be any problem in regards with optimization. Developers has been making games that scale across PS3/Vita/PS4 easily. mobile developers has made games across ios platforms (ipad/iphone/ipad pro/ipad mini etc) easily. And now suddenly it will be a problem with PS4/PS4.5? That's nonsense.

Of course it will sell.

Half of GAF spend their time sitting and debating how games run on PS4. Yet when Sony plans to release a more powerful model a few of them start to cry. But they'd definitely be there day one.

I'm definitely in day one on this if it is true. I hoped when they announced the PS4 architecture that this would be the route they went down.

I would be happy for Playstation as a platform from now on, a new model released every 2 years and everything fully backwards compatible. If they did that they just need to ensure that games released going forward would have to support all models released in a certain reasonable window (say 6-8 years).

Also, if they are going down this route it might incentivise them to get PS3 emulation (or at least easy path to port games) for the x86 architecture, which I'd imagine somewhere in Sony they are working on for PSNow as hosting Cell hardware in server farms can't be sustainable.

I mostly buy my hardware +2 years into the lifecycle. So don't like this news at all.

I'm kind of fond of 6-8 year console cycles. I can understand PSVR being a potential gameshifter that needs better hardware, and I don't mind a PS4 version that can render in 4K, but if it makes PS4 titles run less well framerate wise I might be out.

This might turn out bad for Sony, a lot of my friends have PS4's and they are not involved in the gaming community at all they are very casual gamers. I got a few phone calls already of miffed friends thinking that there is a "new PS4" and their consoles are obsolete. I hope they just call it the PS4 Slim or something to remove that confusion.

Lol, a friend of mine bought a 1TB PS4 just several weeks ago, he always takes an eternity to make such buying decisions: "But what if the NX comes out soon, won't it be better? What about PS5, could it already be on the horizon?? Will there be a 2TB edition?..."

Guess he didn't hear about this yet, or I'm sure he would've called me already, but he'll be pissed that's for sure ;)

Agreed. I imagine there will be a crow post or two. ;)

Didn't we start this shit? With the constant comparison videos...the framerate tests...the highlighting of the downgrades from initial footage?

How can people bitch and moan about performance issues with the current PS4 and then shit all over a new, improved model?

I realize performance has a lot to do with developers, but they can only do so much to solve the issues with such little power.

I think it will sell like hot cake at launch and quickly slowdown after enthusiast wave.

Quick slowdown? No chance. If this thing is that much more powerful, it'll crush at retail. Write that down and remember it. COnsumers, especially gamers, want the latest and greatest from the market leader, no matter how much we may hem and haw about it.

I hope the 4.5 will have atleast 1GB hdd, i have 2GB in my 4.0 and i hope i can switch the hdd, put the 2GB in the 4.5 and the other one in the 4.0

I think this will be day1 for me, just like Ps4 was =)

I'm really curious to see where these two rumored consoles both end up. It's be really funny if somehow MS came out with a slightly more expensive yet still slightly less powerful machine again.

Gotta be intense debates inside those offices as to what spec / price to put these machines at.

If it really does hinder the performance of games on the OG PS4, I'm out. I usually stay with the same console for 5 years or so. Outside of PS2 I almost never buy a console when it comes out. Only bought that because of the DVD player. It's the convenience of consoles that attracts me to gaming. With this new thinking that will be out of the question.

My PS4 is less than a year old. Now there will be a stronger model out there already? Yeah, no thanks. I'll just find something else to do. This remake/sequel generation is probably the worst when it comes to games (IMO), so it's not a big loss to me personally. The only sequel or series that I consistently play is GTA, and if they bring out a new model you just know that the game will be a horrible experience on the vanilla PS4.

Would have been better if they just added 4k BluRay, slimmer design, quieter, and maybe an ssd.

This whole 2xGPU mid-gap nonsense is just gonna cause problems.

Just launch PS5 in late 2018 and make sure it's 100% compatible with all PS4 games.

This just seems like a waste of money to me by Sony. How many people have 4k tv's and how many of those people are going to buy a new PS4 if they already have one? And isn't 8k technology just around the corner? I dunno. Cool news, but I question the decision.

Because gamers are second only to wrestling fans in terms of their entitlement complexes and their codependency-infused relationship with the hobby that they claim to love so much.

plus the storm could speed up adoption of Dolby Vision & HDR10 TV sets, Auro3D & Atmos receivers, and if AMD plays this right: big penetration for their Freesync-over-HDMI tech outside computer monitors

meaning we'll all go broke or go emo with nintendo

2 Gigs is not nearly enough to run anything. i think you mean Terabyte?

But huge part of console buyers are those who wait until $299.

Agreed. I imagine there will be a crow post or two. ;)

This guy gets it.

Yup. I fully expect this will sell at least just as well as vanilla PS4. That 399 price point is key. People are VASTLY underestimating what this thing will do saleswise as long as Sony ticks the right boxes. All the talk of "Sony/PS4 doomed" is nonsense.

ghst shows up and drive by shit posts all the time in console threads. I don't know why he constantly gets away with it when I've seen people banned for much less.

People that actually care about power beyond their e-peen aren't in the market for consoles. This is an enthusiast play, like the xbone elite stuff. The mass market goes for the cheaper box.
