PS4K information (~2x GPU power w/ clock+, new CPU, price, tent. Q1 2017)

You forget Ascension did not run like a dream... and there was not 3.5. ;)

It is the same ecosystem, the same disc will run on both, I am sure they will maximize the PS4, and get that much more out of it on the PS4K.

Give these developers some credit man.

Ascension was pretty much a cashgrab, but either way you've missed the point. Think of it like this. Naughty dog originally planned for 60FPS for uncharted 4. Ultimately they gave up. if the 4k dev kits were readily available they would've got 60 fps, and therefore the ps4 version would've had to be significantly downgraded in order to run. They could lock at 30FPS and keep the fidelity, but I still feel if it was specialized and focused on ps4 it would look even better- it looks incredible on the ps4, if it had been built with 4k in mind, it may not look or run as good as it does. Of course well see though.

How does that change how it willl run on ps4?

Because there is a new reason to blame the shit some bitch about now. ;)

Huh?

Uncharted would have been what we have now, but maybe, 60FPS on the PS4K. And ND would be the last I would mention in this fear concern, lol.

I am not following, lol.

For the most part, yes.
Some games add in much higher poly counts and can handle new tricks. It's not a drastic leap like PS1->2->3
This is why people kinda feel underwhelmed by the differences.

really?

How you go from them not knowing if they want to release it at $399 with 2X the power of the GPU or $499 with a new CPU to knowing that they will release it at $499? Also when you posted at 1st it was Q1 2017 now you're saying it will be in stores around the same time as the OGPS4 & before Christmas.

So you're telling me that Sony made these big decisions since you posted the thread & got back to you with the new information?

I'm not sure why people are so upset.

I too would prefer to see a 'PS5', but I'd rather have a more powerful home console than the gimped hardware that we currently have.

I thought we would see a big leap in graphics, but honestly, there hasn't been. Visuals look mostly the same as last gen, except everything is more refined. If this means we will finally get a sizeable upgrade, then I'm all for it.

No one is forcing you to buy this. It's optional. Just like how purchasing the most expensive GPU in the world is optional.

There's no real reason to believe the bolded, unless we want to put faith into an unreleased iteration of hardware we already own for no real reason other than a feel-good anticipation that the dreams we had about the PS4 will finally come true. If a full-generation leap was disappointing, what makes you think a mid-gen leap won't?

This is what I was talking about earlier. Some are projecting their disappointments of the PS4 into the PS4K and fantasizing about the "true" PS4 they wanted to get. Except for that right now we know nothing about a roadmap of what games will look/perform better. This won't be the PS4 you dreamed about in Feb 2013.

With all the info we got now, shouldnt Q1 2017 be removed from the title? It seems pretty obvious to me they are planning it to launch this year.

Well still doesn't mean much, the majority of games lead on pc, doesn't mean they won't optimize the ps4 version as much as possible.

Thanks for proving my point. Most wouldn't want you to point out cross platform or cross gen games as an example. Hell look at FFXV which is struggling on ps4 and even SE has talked about it running better on pc. Exclusives on the other hand typically aren't prone to the same issues as frequently, because they are made for one piece of hardware. They know their limitations from the getgo. Now they aren't developing with those ps4 specs in mind, instead they are developing to the 4k then making cuts and "significant sacrifices" in order to make it run.

You get some info, you make some assumptions.

You get more info, you narrow it down.

Sony is definitely spending millions to develop a new system around a single indie title.

You can't just help some people, I guess.

No Man's Sky is obviously just an example of one game Sony might want to have in VR, but can't with the PS4 hardware. The fact it's "indie" is totally irrelevant. It's a system seller.

I'm not bitching about it, because yes I will buy it, but I think it's a poor move on sonys part. Yes it fixes tthose issues you talk about, but the idea is this 4.5 will create more of those framerate issues since games will be more focused on running on the 4.5.

At this point it's just a matter of wait and see, so I think we should stop the debate where it's at. Let's see when it comes out.

Ha I get you. I honestly don't know if it's a bad move on Sony's part. We just don't know yet. I was talking to another gamer in real life and he was like "Fuck, I just bought my PS4...but if it comes out I'm going to fucking buy it."

I think there's going to be two tiers for the PS4 and PS4K.

Us, game enthusiasts, tech lovers will all buy this machine. We'll essentially double dip. I bought my PS4 at launch and I'm ready to upgrade. (My system has had some WiFi issues and generally scares me that it will die). People will begrudge it in the beginning but then fall to the pressure.

Dudebros who just want to play Madden, Fifa, GTA and COD will just stick with the regular PS4. Casuals.

I guarantee they'll do something like make 600,000 and drive demand and make us all go crazy for this machine. Kinda like the XBOX Elite controller.

Sounds like they were getting info from 3 diff retailer higher ups. Probably started thread with just 1, and got more info over a few days.

Then you have games like witcher 3 and star wars battlefront front arguably some of the most technically impressive games on ps4 especially battlefront, that to me is the most technically impressive ps4 game.

@Osiris.

I meant you can't say what name it has been given. Surely you can say that yes it has a name (that you know) or no it doesn't (that you know).

Considering all the other stuff you have posted on this thread?

Only if there is room for secret sauce.

In a box so small there probably isn't. But all I know is if games come on 3 layer blurays or have the ability to be 100gb on disc download... 500gb will go significantly quicker.... This will happen if cutscenes in games are 4k or if texture packs are a thing for this system....

So the console market indeed tends to become a smartphone like market.

Thanks, Sony. That's precisely what I wanted!

I don't mind it, I buy a new tablet every 5 or so years.

I went from iPad 2 to iPad Air 2 (iPad 6), between them was iPad 3, iPad 4, iPad Air (iPad 5). You don't need to get a new piece of hardware when they come out.

"If you want games that run decently just spend an extra $500" come the fuck on

First, we don't know it's going to be $500. Secondly, I'm talking about the minutiae that creates enormous threads on GAF. This machine is intended for those who care about resolution and framerates. Those who want a premium experience.

You can't just help some people, I guess.

To be fair while the idea is ridiculous, in the grand scheme it's symbolic of what's going on.

I believe sony wants big scale games to be available in VR. For the most part we haven't seen anything actually running in PSVR outside of indies that are updated, or games developed specifically with the limitations in mind- rigs I'm looking at you.

I think sony wants to be able to send out there big games and be able to include VR as a part of it. That way it doesn't have the PSMove/Peripheral issue where few games can effectively use it without that specifically in mind. VR is a lot more accessible given it's a viewing device, and headtracking is usefull in just about every game in a significant way. If they could simply attach it to all first person games with some sacrifices that would be ideal. WIthout the power upgrade though, the sacrifices would have to be very large.

Best example is driveclub VR. At face value it appears like driveclub, but apparently there were a ton of cuts from it, so much so that it essentially had to be developed as a tech demo rather than driveclub on low settings. Sony wants to make it something developers can add with ease and keep the base game fully in tact.

I never once said it will be universal, however there will be games that are most definitely affected by this at least IMO.

I think the bigger issue is for PSVR. I will not be surprised at all if some games will require 4k to run, or at the very least the ones on ps4 will be a huge downgrade.

I just need to ask what is the reason for that? Do you think it is cheaper to keep a PC up to date?

No, I know it isn't. But graphics options and customizability is what I'm getting at. If in another 2-3 years they release the PS5 then I would be replacing my console sooner than my gpu.

Them knowing there limitations from get go don't mean much .
It's why we get games like TLOU they will make cut even without PS4k.

and again BOOM. This meshes with the various rumors having some less specific info that was still a little foggy. Sounds like Q4 this year at 499. 2x cpu, 2x gpu.

I will likely be cancelling my VR order for now to buy this.

@Mushroom021

I've been holding off on PSVR just because it doesn't really pique my interest as of yet...but how is this going to change the launch of VR? What happens to the processing unit? Does the PS4K need it?

makes the launch seem really messy to me...

Third-party games are already effected obviously as they lead on pc, with 3-4x the power of ps4, even sony exclusives are already effected, drive club being 30fps, Bloodborne dropping below 30fps often, kill zone being 30fps, uncharted 4 being 30fps.

Because this new hardware will magically get rid of game development shortcomings.

I was being a little snarky. It won't be a panacea. But maybe 3rd parties can lead on PC and transition games easily to both platforms.

As for the AAA titles Sony develops it can be inferred that they will be tailored nicely to both systems. One will obviously run better than the other.

More choices isn't necessarily a bad thing.

The "processing unit" is a breakout box, don't give that any real consideration, it's very minor, mainly used to unscramble the image and process the audio for VR.

The reason I'll hold off is because I don't have 900 dollars to drop. 500 isn't awful, 400 alone was fine. I can't do both and I'd rather have the higher fidelity gaming if I had to choose only 1. Sounds like the flagship games for next year will already take big advantage of the 4.5- GOW4k, Deep Down, Sony Bends game.

I really want VR, but I'm not confident in the ability of the OG Ps4 to run it at a satisfactory level. Hell even that media player rumor seems exclusive to 4.5

Third-party games are already effected obviously as they lead on pc, with 3-4x the power of ps4, even sony exclusives are already effected, drive club being 30fps, Bloodborne dropping below 30fps often, kill zone being 30fps, uncharted 4 being 30fps.

Bloodborne is a poor example FROM software is notorious for that. Driveclub, KZ, and UC4 run very nice with no performance issue. Limitations were kept in mind and the necessary cuts and tricks were made to make it work. Those won't be the focus this time around with the 4.5 Not as much optimization or clever techniques will be used on 4.5 given the extra buffer they have. Instead they'll take significant cuts to make sure it runs on the 4. I will not be surprised if after UC4 and maybe horizon, that we don't see any games best those ones visually. UC1-2-3 were huge improvements. UC4-5 will see a monumental leap on 4.5, and on 4 it may be lesser in some ways. This is speculation, but I wouldn't be shocked.

This is a cutscene, not actual gameplay. The Uncharted cutscenes have always looked superior to gameplay.

The cutscenes are all in engine now/real time, and developers said the character models were the same assets. Now lighting, etc., will be improved, of course, but the jump is not as stark as last gen with the pre-rendered videos versus now with all in-engine.
