Salt and Sanctuary |OT| Salt for the Soul

Well my new PS4 hard drive (1TB 7200RPM Hitachi Travelstar 7K1000) and Until Dawn just arrived now so I think I'll give that a whirl today but I don't think Salt and Sanctuary is done for me yet, there's some replay value to be had there. Tell you what, was really surprised at how quick and easy it was to replace the PS4 HDD, it took maybe 15 minutes from start to finish, now I just need to download my two digital games then install the rest from disc.
Sorry if I seem privy but aren't you pretty particular about framerate? Until Dawn will prolly give you a headache.

I am and it is, it's the chopiest game I've played on PS4 thus far. I'm a huge fan of the genre and I got it cheap but my God the frame rate is horrific. I'm doing my best to enjoy it despite the fact it looks like the artists are drawing it live frame by frame for me.

Weird, I've only experienced a frame rate issue maybe twice, and that's after using a sanctuary to level up. The visual effect that occurs slowed stuff down as I opened up my inventory. But everything went back to normal pretty quickly. I never had any issues during combat.

Edit- never mind you're talking about Until Dawn. I haven't followed the game much, but am disappointed to hear if the frame rate issues.

This is becoming one of my favorite games ever.

Thanks to all who recommended it.

This thread is a big reason why I bought it, you bastard's made me so jealous, the same thing is happening in the Dark Souls III thread but I've pretty much blown my gaming budget for now with the new HDD and all so I'll have to stay strong for now :D

I've just defeated
jester
but not sure why I can't set up sanctuaries and call merchants etc anymore? I don't really get how it works. I've come to a candle shortly after the boss fight it restores my health but I can't level up do anything else there. I've joined the stone roots but what do I need to set them up elsewhere as well.

The candle is considered a shrine, not a full fledged sanctuary, so you can only heal there. Sanctuaries are always larger rooms with an empty altar where you can place your creed's item to claim it.

It's only been a couple of days for me, but the wait for the patch so I can start playing again is nigh unbearable. I refuse to progress forward without a working Flint & Steel however.

Apologies if this has been stated before, but does anyonr have an accurate count of "bonus" bosses? Those bosses not tied to game progression/a trophy?

Find an empty Sanctuary - a long room, probably dark to begin with, and there will be altar in the centre. When you get close to that altar it will prompt you to select an idol using the d-pad and then when you choose the idol for your current faith (in your case, the stone acorn) you should be able to claim the Sanctuary for your faith, which will allow you to heal and summon merchants, blacksmiths, etc. In most dungeon areas of the game there is a vacant Sanctuary, although there are a small handful in the game which are already occupied.

Three:

The Forgotten King
Ronin Cran
Murdiella Mal

Lastly, beating The Unspeakable Deep is not tied to game progression, but there is a gold trophy for doing it. It must be done on a new character at the very beginning of the game.

I don't have an item to place for these empty sanctuaries though.

Starter this game with a dex build against all the tips on this topic. Had to put in a couple of points in strength to wield a two handed sword to take down the alchemist, but after I found the tachi the game became quite manageable as a dex. Two hands handling it or doing a tachi/shotgun combo is good fun. Took down the tree of men and the abdominal beast (or something) with two or three tries.

Amazing game, one of my favourite games in a long time. Gives me a metroid feeling as well as a dark souls feeling, and I can't give much higher remarks than that. By far the greatest 2D game I have played the last 2-3 generations.

Beat the game earlier this week, loved it. Became super easy the last half though because I think I overleveled. Hit the soft cap with strength I think.

Last boss took me 2 tries, all other bosses after Disemboweled Husk were first try kills. Still, I think i prefer it that way. Wish the Souls games allowed me to plow through like that sometimes. :)

It seems this is the experience for most people who went a strength build which is a shame, I can't think of anything more boring than one shotting every boss in a Souls game. The Husk was the last boss I really felt happy about killing.

New challenge mode introduced: Everything Is Spindlebeast!

“You can never have enough spindlebeasts” is a phrase we recently heard. In fact, that is one of the most common complaints about Salt and Sanctuary: There aren’t enough spindlebeasts. So, in the next update we’re introducing a new “Everything is Spindlebeasts” challenge mode!

Nice! Even shopkeepers will turn into Spindlebeasts:

Can't wait! ;)

Cleared Castle of Storms, the fire is nothing with the Blacksmith set @_@

But holy shit Hall of Red Cages is alot scarier when you have 11000 salt riding on the line. I didn't find the Sanctuary but I did open up the short cut to bandit's pass and said fuck it I'm out of here!

Where was it though? Is it
down the darkened hallway?

You passed the sanctuary then. It's not too far from the start coming from Storms. It's on the right somewhere before you get too far down.

You mean before the
Jester
?

Don't remember, but it's definitely before the shortcut back to bandit's if you're coming from the top.

EDIT:

I just checked, it's literally the first hallway going right one floor down from where you first come in.

I really don't play magic based characters often so I was skeptical at first but wow magic is pretty boss in this game and I don't even have any of the higher level spells yet.

So I finally beat it today.

Wow.... this is by far the best $18 I have spent on a game. It feels more complete and larger than some $60 games released lately.

What I ended up loving is later in the game when the Metroidvania vibe of exploration went fully on. Just wow.

I love this game.

for a dex build you should have used the poleaxe to kill the jester since it's bonus is with dex, not strengh and is a great weapon, finished the game usibg it and a transmute of it.

So just started this today, killed some bosses, came across a
fake jester
who gave me his left ear, which I transmuted into a trident (was that a mistake.)

Also I came across a bottle which said sanctuary this way, and it looked like it but inside nothing happened expect my dpad appeared on screen with the words select icon? Any help please

Same, what's up with that?

Finally beat The Unspeakable Deep! Just needed patience and timing. I took two hits but as a Cleric I had the ability to heal (at the cost of some stamina) so it wasn't too bad. Anyway, now on through NG+ and to the Platinum I hope!

You got an item at the start of the game after picking your creed when you first got to the island. Use that to claim empty sanctuaries. You can't discard it so you should definitely still have it.

Go into your inventory and equip the Creed item into an item slot (candelabra for the Three, acorn for Stone Root, etc). Then press R1 to "use" the item and place it onto the altar. This lets you claim the sanctuary for your Creed.

Are you guys serious? lol

To claim a sanctuary for your own creed, you must equip your creed idol/icon (such as the Metal Icon for the Iron Ones, or the Candelabra for the Three, etc.) that the old man gave you at the beginning, then you select the item in your quick-item list and press r1 to use it in front of a sanctuary altar.

Basically, exactly the same as you did at the very first sanctuary. Some of the sanctuaries you find are already pre-claimed by some creeds, but most are empty and there for you to claim.

Referring back to a post I made earlier. You will have either the Stone Acorn, Earthen Vessel, Candelabra of the Three or an iron icon if you chose the Iron Ones. Do the following to claim a Sanctuary, but it must be using the icon for your current creed:

Find an empty Sanctuary - a long room, probably dark to begin with, and there will be altar in the centre. When you get close to that altar it will prompt you to select an idol using the d-pad and then when you choose the idol for your current faith (in your case, the stone acorn) you should be able to claim the Sanctuary for your faith, which will allow you to heal and summon merchants, blacksmiths, etc. In most dungeon areas of the game there is a vacant Sanctuary, although there are a small handful in the game which are already occupied.

If you're part of the Stone Roots covenant then you will have a stone acorn in your inventory. Have a double-check for it.

I try using the Candelabra but when I press R1, nothing happens. I'll try again later.
Are you still in the creed of the Three? If so, it should work if you're standing right in front of the altar, there should be a "claim sanctuary" prompt.

If you took another oath after that then your creed icon will be different, e.g. the acorn if you took the oath of the poison forest near the Alchemist boss.

Thanks....I have that 3 pronged candle but nothing happens when I press R1..... I must be being thick here

I try using the Candelabra but when I press R1, nothing happens. I'll try again later.

You can only use the Creed item for the Creed you are currently a member of. If you originally started with the Three, but took an oath to, say, Devara's light, you can't use the Candelabra anymore and must use Devara's item.

:) That's great to hear. I feel exactly the same. There are some rough spots and a lot of imbalance across builds, but for something that takes inspiration from Dark Souls, I expected imbalance going in (especially magic; I was right that magic is totally broken).

Oh fuck, I need to use the Earth Vessel.

I have two characters going (SP and MP) and for the one I am currently playing I need to use the Earth Vessel.

I made that mistake at first too - I'd totally forgotten that I'd switched creeds, and I was just doing it on autopilot so I hadn't really paid attention.

Just got this game the other day, and already need help!

Just finished the, maybe, 2nd boss? The
smile of death
boss or whatever it was.

Question is: now what? Been running around, but everything is dead end.

You should be able to go to the right from the boss area. Down a ladder to an area that holds a chest.
