Did people who get the cancellation email ever get a pending charge from HTC? I have a pending $880 charge from HTC.

I didn't get a pending charge, but my bank told me that they attempted to on March 31st. People who called about it said that HTC was going to try 2 more times within 48 hours, but my bank is only showing 1 single attempt before receiving the cancellation notice this morning.

I am on the phone with customer service who said they are going to escalate and call me back.

Yea, it's funny how people were calling shit on Oculus. My Oculus has been delayed to due to whatever reasons and I received an order cancellation from HTC even though they only made 1 attempt to charge my card.

Seriously. This has been the most frustrating customer experience of my life. Up there with Comcast and AT&T. Just got off the phone with a rep who could tell me nothing but "sorry" and they are "working on it" and that I'll receive an e-mail at some point in the futute. WTF kind of bullshit is this? I was specifically told multiple times they would attempt recharge this morning.

So my mom never was really much for video games, but back in the 80's she used to adore this:

It was a light gun game for the Sega Master System that was very similar to Lethal Enforcers. She was actually great at it, we had two light guns for the SMS and she'd play with one in each hand. She was the first person in the family to beat the game, and it was the only game she'd actually get out and play on her own.

Now, she's actually interested in VR today (my dad is slowly putting together dual rigs for her and him at his house over the next several months so they can watch VR content together) but mainly the passive stuff. The moment you put a controller in her hand, it becomes too complex for her.

I'm having a BBQ in a few weekends to let a bunch of friends and family try out the new headsets, I can't wait to let her try Space Pirate Trainer. Surely that will blow her mind.

That's a really endearing story. Also, how are you still just a Junior?

OK so HTC just rang and did a remote login session to take me to a unique URL, where I bought another vive which apparantly puts me back where I was in the queue - although he was vague, saying 'first batch' and 'during april'.

The only worrying thing is that the payment wasn't done immediately, so I'm going to have to do that overnight thing. I might actually stay up late tonight just in case..

Did they call you back to do it, or do it while you were on the phone?

I just got a fully licensed version of Altium at home, this is a pretty simple design so I might create a PCB layout for it to get used to the program and upload it for others to manufacture if they want. Maybe even sell a few if people are interested.
Regarding that, I still wonder if Valve are planning to sell these (or a future version) at some point.

I couldn't get enough money for April preorder on HTC site so I filled in preorder with my local retailer but they have only rough release date - April 2016. Any news on when it will be available for retail?

I just realized something, while looking at the extremely high-speed tracking gif again which was posted a while back.

Where is VR table tennis?
It seems like the quintessential room-scale VR sport experience. A ~3m by 3m area should be sufficient to get a pretty good (albeit casual) game on if it only needs to represent ~1m of the table and 2m back from that.

We are making one. Stay tuned! :)

Damn that's a good layout job, I hope so because I would love to mess around with them, but doesn't seem too likely, at least until they release some sort of software support for third party tracked peripherals. I'm also wondering at how well just using these with no IMU works.

They called me back. I called them this morning around 11am. They took my number and said they'd contact the Vive support team who would call back within 3 hours.

Although from reddit it seems the US is doing things differently, I've only seen UK support do this remote login/replace order approach.

Support for Switzerland said there's nothing they can do.

I'll contact them again monday and then call them trying to talk to someone who actually knows something.

Worst customer service ever.

apparantly they are using a one-time URL which allows them to jump the queue? from what I saw the unique part was just a number at the end, and they could have easily given me that over the phone.

Did you place another order or you're waiting for an answer?

Deciding what to do myself. I'm busy this month, so a delay isn't going to hurt me that much, other than pissing the consumer in me.

Thats really dubious, why on earth would they even need to do that anyway?

This is awesome. Thanks for sharing.

Who are "we"? How are you implementing ball/racket physics?
Can I beta test? My qualifications are a Vive (soon), a CS PhD and being pretty good at table tennis :P

"we" is me and a couple of coworkers from work. We work in the filim vfx industry but have lots of coworkers and friends who came from games that are helping us out.

Will definitely let you know when it's ready for testing. We are working on the prototype now while we wait for our vives to arrive. It should be ready to test in a month or so.

I will check with them and see if we can start a thread here so you guys can see and comment on what we are trying to do.

Okay looks like I'll be getting pushed back to wave 2 as well. My stupid fuckking bank still hasn't processed the payment after 48 hours. It's just sitting as pending. I called them yesterday and they said it'd be processed by midnight last night. No luck. Now it'll be Monday. So stupid.
When it's in processing HTC can take the money whenever they want.
Are you in the Midwest? I think we're getting shipped Monday. Don't sweat it.

If you look around, you can find kits that teach you how to make audio amplifiers and things of that sort, usually in the size and shape of an altoids tin can. They usually are books that intend to teach you how to solder, but they serve as a nice basis for the extreme fundamentals of EE - how to read and build a circuit, basic components, etc.
I took an intro to electronics class. I actually really enjoyed it. I recommend it.

You guys should make it early access or something. I'd totally back that.

Thanks. I hope so but at this point I've given up on expecting to receive it this week. It's just not worth the stress and anxiety :)

I'm focusing on playing Hyper Light Drifter and Dark Souls 3 in the meantime... which is a pretty amazing alternative.

I'm not seeing the VR aspect at all here. This could just as well be a basic monitor based RTS. If anything, the constant maneuvering around space without any fixed frame of reference makes me think it'd be better on a monitor. They're going to have to show how they're integrating this into VR for me to have any real enthusiasm for this.

I don't see it yet either but the fact that I'm getting a space RTS is enough for me to be excited. I can imagine walking around the battles themselves and moving individual units, yes yes I can.

Think Homeworld or Sins of a Solar Empire but instead of panning around with the camera, I can be in and around the ships in battle. I can reach out and grab a ship and do something with it.

That's a vision I can get behind. YMMV, of course.

I don't know if a space RTS benefits too much from VR, but a tabletop "grounded" strategy game would sure be nice in VR.

I think a space one would be awesome if the game took place on a simulated holographic map. Like you'd see the floor of the room/space ship you're in but the game takes place on a 3D holographic map that you can walk around.

Yes, but that would be practically tabletop.

Homeworld 3 VR... I dunno if we as a species are ready for that.

The larger ships are like a few metres and fighters a few centimeters. Looks really neat at that scale.
You're not going to be walking around the battle at those scales. Shrink it down far enough that the big ships fit in a play area, and the small ships are going to be impossible to target accurately - at least without the equivalent of VR tweezers. So now you're going to need to figure out how to zoom in and out and pan/rotate around without making the user subject to nausea. Then there's figuring out the UI/HUD for the lower resolution screens, and a multitude of other details.

Don't get me wrong, I'm all for an RTS using VR with tracked controllers and possibly room scale, but the implementation makes or breaks it. That has to be designed for from the get go, and not just patched in later. Right now all I see is a tech demo of some ships of varying sizes firing at each other in a mostly 2D plane with a camera zooming around. I can fire up SoaSE this instant to get that in a much more polished form with an actual game built around it. Until there's details on how the VR aspect fits in, there's literally nothing to me to get hyped for. The mere existence of something with nothing tangible just doesn't do it for me. Good ideas are a dime a dozen. We get crap tons of them here. Good implementations are priceless.

Hmm, this might be another case where an instant transition is easier to handle than a smooth one. Blink to macro scale.

I just really want Black and White 3 with Vive controllers.

That would be a killer app.

Rest in peace Lionhead.

Yes. Zoom in for the battles. Or in the space stations. Or planets. Or cities.

I wonder how well something like pinch to zoom would work for this. Imagine panning with your movement and head and zooming in and out using both hands. Streatch your arms out and "grab" with both hands and then bring them together to zoom out and the opposite to zoom in, while being able to pan with your head and movement by walking at the same time.

Obviously you would have to set a certain speed for the zooming so you don't get sick. Also, to move the scene without changing scale you could reach out and grab "space" with both hands with different buttons and drag the entire scene closer or further depending on what direction you are dragging.

Edit: I think this type of locomotion would work better in space because of the openness but yeah, I haven't even been inside of VR yet so... lol I am just really excited.

I think Realities.Io uses something like this.

Has anyone in or around Texas received their shipment confirmation yet? I've been charged as of two days ago, but have yet to receive it.

Im in the first wave, my payment was taken on thursday, it shipped same day, then my bank froze the account out of suspicion of fraud on friday night, cancelled my card and issued a charge back on that transaction. So now my order is likely to be stopped in customs and returned to HTC im assuming and i cant reprocess the payment until i receive my new card and activate it. Now it looks likely that ill lose my pre order and wont be able to reorder until between 5-10 working days from Monday when my account gets reactivated.

Devastated.

The bank didn't contact you before going ballistic? Man I would be pissed and would send them packing.

This is something I don't understand. A bank shouldn't act like this. A call to the customer for confirmation is not that expensive.

Woah.....the worst story yet.

Sorry to hear that...strange that your bank nuked your account without at least an email or phone call.

Still, HTC situation is just beyond justifiable. There's something really wrong with the way they handle payments; so many banks cancelling is not normal for such a company. No wonder they're going down on the phone market.
