Giant Bomb Vive stream | What a Time to Be a Vive!

'hate' may be too strong a word, but they definitely thought less of the Wii and Kinect than pretty much everyone else. Again, I'm just basing what I said on the last couple of pages of reactions here, and from watching the Oculus stream the other day where they complained about having to turn all the way around to turn all the way around and wanted to know if you could make it turn all the way around by just turning a little bit.

I mean... that's Giant Bomb no?

I'm just reacting to the reactions. I can't watch right now. Giant Bomb are not reflecting most people's reactions to the Rift or the Vive. Yes a few other outlets have been unimpressed, but the consensus has been absolutely positive. Expecting one of the few outlets that were more unimpressed by the Rift than most people to be representative of reactions to the Vive is, imho, just silly.

Heh, I'm pretty sure they were relating the VR to Track IR and the differences when they were talking about not having to turn around completely.

Having played a few things where you don't have 1:1 on your turning radius, it's nauseating as hell.

also i don't feel like they were complaining.

Whats funny is Jeff was straight up enjoying the hell out of some of the games where movement was a direct requirement lol.

Yup. They were genuinely having a blast with many of the games, but that doesn't change reality. Reality being the price tag and space requirements.

They think a of it is cool and they are positive, but they don't think there are deep and compelling experiences right now to keep them coming back again and again. Combine that with the price and space requirements it's tough to recommend.

That game wasnt a killer app though. If you're limiting it to things that show off VR tech in a cool way than both the Oculus and the Vive already have titles that have done that.

Wii Sports is the very definition of a killer app.

It was exciting and fun until they started to dig into the early-access tech demos... they were having fun, and we were having fun watching.

Thank you. I just stopped in here to see how things were going since I can't tune in. Evidently the last few pages aren't really representative of the stream.

Nothing can really give you a handle on VR other than trying it yourself. I know how that sounds. I know that it sounds like 'You have to see it to believe it! HYPE HYPE HYPE!' but there are far too many experiential things involved for you to accurately guess how much your subconscious mind will or won't be fooled by what VR does, and whether or not it'll make you motion sick.

Eurogamer said it best:

You won't necessarily become an instant convert... but watching videos of people playing VR won't give you a good idea of what it's like to play VR even if it'll give you a good idea of what you do in the specific games.

I doubt the people at Eurogamer had to build a high end PC, pay $600-800 first and move their stuff around just to be able to try it.

More Best Buy and other retail stores will be getting them for demos so I guess we'll have to wait until those are widely available.

I'll be interested in trying it then, assuming they clean their kits properly.

Sorry if I upset you by drawing a line between their feelings on motion controls, and the Rift and the Vive.

No, that is just your interpretation of what they are saying. They have been positive and not really complaining about shit like turning around more just saying sometimes it feel unnecessary.

I think it is fair to compare with wii motion games. This initial launch is like wii sports, but wii never really evolved much beyond that. I think VR has a much better chance of doing so, but there are still a lot of '101 funfair games' as developers get shit out there, or just experiment to see what works.

For some that is interesting, but for others they'll want to wait for the dust to settle. Both are absolutely fine.

I would have hoped the scale and sense of being in a place would have been a big differentiator vs simple motion controls. 'standing in a square and poking at things' is hugely simplifying things, as ultimately a lot of real life is standing and poking at things.

Wii Sports is among the strongest killer apps in gaming history in terms of the effect it had on sales -- that game alone completely tilted the balance of the console wars for that generation.

No, that is just your impressions of what they are saying. They have been positive and not really complaining about shit like turning around more just saying sometimes it feel unnecessary.

I came into the thread and saw people saying they were thinking about cancelling their Vive's and such stuff, and other people criticizing Giant Bomb for not giving VR a chance.

So I reacted to that. Had no idea they were much more positive than the last few pages of the thread made it seem until some folks were kind enough to let me know. I only came in here to see how they were liking the Vive since I can't watch the stream, so I'll leave you all to it now that I've got a better idea than the last few pages made things appear.

That... didn't happen? It was brought up because that's how TrackIR works, but was dismissed because when you're supposed to be immersed, a dramatic difference between what you're doing and what you appear to be doing is what causes things like motion sickness.

In fact I think it was even a question from the chat that prompted it...

Thank you. I just stopped in here to see how things were going since I can't tune in. Evidently the last few pages aren't really representative of the stream.

There was a lull when they stopped the stream to archive so we were on autopilot for a while. They had a quick couch conversation about the software not being there yet to justify the cost, and this thread took a crap.

today's stream makes me a lot more interested in trying VR than last week. After the Rift stream I was super underwhelmed, but some of the stuff today seems actually cool. But overall this seems like something I would love to play at an Arcade or Dave & Busters... not sure I would do much with it at home after the initial excitement wore off, and at the current prices i am definitely not jumping in right away at least.

But I havent tried VR for myself yet, so maybe that would change my mind...

Wii Sports is the very definition of a killer app.

I guess its a killer app in terms of moving units, but as an actual game I cant consider it one. The game didint stand the test of time a few years after its release because it was completely based on a gimmick. Every killer app can at least stand on its own after everything is said and done. Wii sports helped move a ton of units, true, but I dont consider it an amazing game in any sense of the word. Someone can play SM64 now and see why the game was considered amazing. I dont think the same can be said with Wii sports.

Yup. Giant Bomb hating anything where they have to move around says nothing about VR and everything about Giant Bomb hating anything where they have to move around.

What's weird is that they were saying the exact opposite during the Rift stream and that all those games could work just as well with traditional controls. So to their credit they really are impartial when it comes to their hate. lol

Just moved some stuff out of my office.

Looking at 2.75m x 2.9m total area with all of that for playspace (I dunno how playspace measures vs. walls, but, that's the open area I have)

NO HTC EMAIL THO DAMMIT

We are meeting some interesting folk in this thread huh!

giant bomb sux, cynical assholes!!

now those gametrailers fellas, they know gamers, am i right? I AM HYPE FOR CONSUMERISM

How am I doing?

I'll say this Vive stuff looks more fun and interesting than the Oculus stuff they did last week, which just looked like gimmicky crap to me, or "normal" games like Lucky's Tale that happen to be on VR.

Done with the stream. Its doing nothing but make me second guess my $887 pre-order (fwiw, I agree with GB, but still want to get this), heh

Have fun fellas, I'll read the rest of the thread later.

haven't you heard? the GB crew is the most cyncial and jaded group of people around. everything outta their mouths is a complaint or anime talk.

The thing is that they didn't hate everything where you have to move. They were quite into the few first things they tried.
