Game Informer May Cover Reveal: Final Fantasy XV

It's hard to explain how I'm feeling about this game. Ever since I played FFVI on the SNES back in the 90s it has been my favorite series. I've probably put over a thousand hours in the games and even got some enjoyment out of the XIII trilogy. That being said, this game doesn't "feel" like a Final Fantasy game. Don't get me wrong, I'm very much looking forward to this game. It's one of the very few times in 25+ years of gaming where I find the world and setting fascinating before even playing the game. For some reason this game just occupies a different space in my head than "the next final fantasy game". I think it might be the real time combat, it just seems so different.

Regardless, Sept 30 can't come soon enough.

ha ha, got me there. LR Lightning is ancient.

Wasn't she 21 in the first game? I'm thinking more 30+. Basically give Cyan/Cid/Laguna/Auron/Basch/Cor type character the spotlight for once.

I'm just reminded of the time when I was excited for another Square Enix game, Front Mission 5, partly because it features adult soldiers (Walter Feng is 28, I think) then got disappointed that they basically interact like a bunch of high school kids.

In comparison, Zidane Tribal mostly has it together, despite being only 16 years old. He has an unshakable value, takes everything in strides and his identity crisis lasts for a grand total of 5 minutes. Imagine if Squall was put in his shoes; how many embarrassing outbursts would we witness?

I guess my point is that age doesn't necessarily make a compelling character. However, I understand the want for older characters, if only for the refreshing aesthetics.

Looks like Rivendell from Lotr.
Tenebrae looks the most straight-up old school fantasy area of FFXV so far

Also at awe noticing that the streetlights in that bottom picture are dwarfed by the size of those pillars. Look at the railing to get a picture of how tall a person would be gazing out into the mountain kingdom. Awesome!

I would love to see dragons there lol

I agree with all of this. What I'd really like is for an FF game to give us a game with 30 year olds who interact like 30 year olds. Could they pull it off and still keep that FF Je ne sais quoi? I'm not sure, but I'd be curious about the result.

Hope your fanfic of Luna being Noctis' older sister come true.

Shhhh! That's a potential spoiler for the game! LOL

What's funny is that Persona fans like me say the exact same thing. I also want a Persona game where the cast in in their 30's and older.

Damn...many great new information on the game.

200+ quests seem like a lot, but that also includes each specific monster hunt and main quests right? I just hope there are little fetch quest or collectathon.

That would be cool. At least bump it up to college or something
that said, my hype for P5 is high, probably right up there with Nier:A and NNK2

I see quest quality as the biggest uncertainty right now - aside from fun monster hunts, last few entries have not delivered very meaningful side content. The world is just begging to be explored, quests or no. But good implementation could really flesh out the characters and the various locales.

A few, but he would have gotten shit done regardless and crash one of Cid's airships into something at one point or another which would have been awesome.

This older lead talk just sounds to me like "I wish this game's story is different from the one we're getting"

The story of XV is clearly a coming of age story. It's a scenario that works best with a youthful protagonist, one that flawed and immature because it amplifies their character journey through the game.

If XV has an older protagonist, the story clearly needs to be more different because then Noctis is expected to be more mature about thing and stuff.

There IS a recent, very mature FF involving mature characters presumably past their early 20's and who act the part.

Well, Lightning is older than every other Final Fantasy protagonist combined. :p

But seriously, she is actually the oldest FF protagonist, yar? It pretty much demonstrate that older isn't necessarily better if nobody knows how to write it.

I believe she was 21 in XIII. How old is Noctis? Do we know that? 17 seems a little nuts for him.

A lot of people are still discovering themselves in their twenties. I'm not averse to teens in the slightest (I actually like characters like that), but JRPGs could do well with some more college-aged leads.

And really, the kind of responsibility Noctis seems to inherit in this game is of the kind of magnitude that most people wouldn't be immediately ready to accept it be they 16, 25, or any age in between.

I guess this is in a way, the older FF cast some people were looking for. Up until this point Cloud and Lightning have been the oldest protagonists in the series from their respective entry games.

Older than Cloud? That's pretty surprising actually.

Older than Cecil and Bartz too(both are 20). If Noctis is 22, that makes him the oldest main FF character in their initial quest? Cloud and Lightning were both 21, while the youngest were Zidane(16), Squall and Tidus(both 17) and Terra(18). FFXII, depending on who you count, it's Vaan(17, up there with Squall and Tidus) or Ashe(19) and both would still be younger than a 22-year old Noctis.

The number differences in the range of +/- 5 years doesn't really matter all that much. A 25 years old protagonist can still be a believably stupid fool whereas a 18 years old can be believably mature, it depends on execution.

What Noctis's older age affords him is his combat skills. In terms of character, despite his age, he's not necessarily the most mature character, not unexpected since he's relatively pampered so it seems.

The comparison was with Cor's age bracket (40s) which is why I wrote what I did.

VII's cast is among the older ones. All in their early 20's except Yuffie.

barrets in his mid 30s though, and vincent is technically in his late 50s, and red XIII / Nanaki is also in his 50s, but in FF7 and his race, thats basically 15 or something

Ah, my bad.

Also do we have a rough idea how many chapters there are? 3?

We have no clue. I think it's safe to say that if they think it'll be a 50 hour game, the few hours that comprise chapter 1 (according to GI, and it's safe to assume they didn't take much time to explore) are likely a pretty small portion of the total game.

More. This won't be like MGSV where chapter 1 is 31 missions long.

I find game chapters really arbitrary (they can be split up by length in an infinite number of ways) and often unnecessary. All we know is GI played a couple hours and Tabata said the story is 50 hours long.

Info sounds great, I'm super hyped for this game.
On the subject of alternate costumes I'd love it if the old costumes for the party are there.
Also Deus Ex costumes... FFXIII-2 had Mass Effect costumes so why not? Deus Ex costumes wouldn't actually look out of place either, imagine Noctis with Jensen's coat. I want it. It's the same publisher and the games are releasing a month apart, I'd be a fun bit of cross promotion.

I agree that the story XV wants to tell requires a relatively young protagonist, and I'm excited to see where they take it and how they execute it. But I would be interested, in the future, what a FF designed from the ground up around the concerns of an older protagonist would look like.

What time does GI usually updates its coverages? How many hours until the next news?

Anyway I'm not sure if I'm happy with the
heroine you can't quite catch
thing, I really hated that in
Zelda Skyward Sword
but that was not really my main issue with the game and maybe it'll be great in FFXV if they play that card right.

I'm also not sure whether I should go on a media blackout or not, by reading this thread and seeing the GI video I pretty much already know how the first chapter is gonna play out (
Ardyn tricking the party
). One thing that I really loved about FFXIII is that it was my first FF, I just started playing without knowing anything about it and I just loved it.

Shame on GameInformer for the IP lock. Oh well, have to use a proxy to access their website =/

Wait they did? Unlockable within the game? Oh lord please let is us get a magi-tech inspired armor suit!
Only one outfit and that is pre-order bonus for Noctis. Maybe they will reveal other as DLCs.

Wait, so is that preorder Suit DLC the "one optional costume for free in the main game" Tabata talked about at TGS last year?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YpnzfHBVJvo&feature=youtu.be&t=57m52s

I was under the impression that the one Tabata mentioned was going to be the original suit Roen designed for Noctis, since that one was part of their original partnership and Tabata recently said something about using the clothes Roen designed under said partnership, the one we can get by pre-ordering or buying the deluxe edition is different (and not designed by Roen apparently) so I'm hoping we can get both :p
