Rogue One: A Star Wars Story - Official Teaser Trailer

ITT I learned that some people watch movies from a series more for "okay so what happens next" and less for engaging storytelling.

Knowing how something ultimately ends doesn't prevent it from being a great story experience. Otherwise, we'd rarely rewatch movies, reread books, etc.

Of course, who knows how this movie will turn out? However, "we know that they get the plans and the Death Star is blown up" shouldn't be cause for dismissal.

First thing that came to mind with this post is, Titanic. We know the ship sinks. What matters is how the film is about it, not what it's about.

At any rate, I came away more interested in this than excited. I mean, it's Star Wars. I'm there opening weekend. But I started the trailer worried about the director, and ended worried about the director and the script.

The more I think about that "I rebel" line the more worrying it becomes. Like they think the audience might not be able to pick up on why she's a good fit for the rebellion. Or that the "well, this is a rebellion" line wasn't on the nose enough, they had to take it further. Giant red flag there. There's not a single line in TFA that is cringe-worthy or takes me out of the film (though there are a few that bug others). This landed a big one in the freaking teaser trailer.

Still not hearing it. That's an echo from his dialogue, not Vader's breathing. The "be-COME" causes the echo that sounds Vader-ish, I guess.

I thought so too at first, but when you isolate it, it REALLY sounds like Vader. If you can scrub the time to right as his dialogue line ends, then play it over a few times from that spot, it really stands out.

This is actually looking really good, if the trailer is anything to go by, its gonna feel very different to the main star wars films, which is good. Not because the main ones are bad or anything, i just feel the anthology films setting themselves apart will stop it feeling like over saturation in the amount of them, when more start flooding out.

On a side note, i didn't see Mads Mikkelsen in the trailer, feels like they're keeping his part under wraps, unless i missed him or didn't recognise him.

I think my issue is that compared to the first six movies both this trailer and The Force Awakens show barely any aliens to the point where you begin to wonder if it's even in the starwars universe anymore.

What is this TFA shitting in this thread? Did I arrive in an alternate universe where TFA is a bad movie or something?
I've pretty much learned to never take the GAF hive mind seriously

I've seen plenty of GAFfers here shit on Zero Dark Thirty for conveying excessive patriotism even though it's actually conveying the exact opposite of that

Certainly CG

Probably, but they did a damn good job of making it look exactly like an OT ship with the lighting.

That's essentially one of my favorite Ebert quotes.
"It's not what a movie is about, it's how it is about it."

Sorry, this is from 12 pages ago so perhaps it's been addressed already, but when Forrest Whittacker says "What will you become?" at about 1:27, you can faintly hear Darth Vader's inhale and exhale. It's followed by the music quoting the Imperial March.

Don't hear that at all, only the echoe of his words

Right from the first teaser, everything about TFA screamed "lavish grandeur" to me, this, not as much.

Everything about TFA was a play on nostalgia
and it played it extremely well

This dose too, but it has no attachment to beloved characters... yet

I would like to see an alien "comrade" in 8 or 9, for sure. Something like Jar Jar... Just, you know, nothing like jar jar.

I'm not saying it looks like a direct to video film or anything, it's obviously a massive blockbuster, and some shots are gorgeous, but it's probably the more toned down color palette, or the more grounded locations.
At times it came off almost as a hard sci fi, more than a fantasy.

It looks very different though, and i like that.

I see what you mean, and agree. It's a deliberate look. I don't think it looks cheap, but it's definitely not going for the same look as TFA. Even in this trailer, there was a fair amount of handheld shots and shots from street level.

Reposting this--I'm really stoked with the thought of Edwards handling the scale of this "small group vs an Imperial army" movie. Say what you want about him, but he one of the best when it comes to portraying scale.

Jakku junkyard? Maz's cantina?

There were plenty of aliens in TFA...

i mean every popcorn film is pointless, including TFA.

I say let them play in the cinematic star wars universe, we've already survived 3 terrible films and it seems to not have done enough harm to ruin star wars so it can survive anything really

Oh I'll go watch it, but I definitely feel most blockbusters are like events, and fill holes that people have been eager for (Like the return of Star Wars itself).

This film just does not look eventful, it looks like it exists to milk the Star Wars name.

I don't see it doing very well. It won't bomb, it's Star Wars, but I can see it underperforming (not comapring to TFA for obvious reasons).

Lets just hope they use Donnie yen and dont fuck up like they did with The Raid crew in the last movie. Worst thing i wish i never knew about the movie before seeing it as that was criminal on how they were used.

Bingo.

Yeah, I replayed it about 10 times, trying to find what that post was talking about. The best I could come up with was when Whitaker says "become". The hard C echoes and sounds a little like a Vader inhale, but still very obviously an echo to me, especially since the rest of that line echoes, as well.

He is so getting jobbed to Darth Vader

Do we have any info on Mikkelsen's character besides him not being a bad guy and being important? Could be that he's an alien and not just a human?

This is my concern as well. I hope it's not a preview of things to come. TFA has zero lines like this, as you said.

BIG RUMOR:
There've been some reports that he's a scientist who helped build the Death Star. He realizes that the Empire is evil as fuck and decides to ditch them. There are also rumors that he's Felicity Jones' father but who knows.

We all know he will only show up in one scene, I'll keep my expectation check.
Him and Jiang Wen only there for Chinese money.

True, but then again that whole scene was useless and should've been cut.
Also, i think they were fasting for Ramadan when the shoot took place, so they probably couldn't do very intense stuff, on a physical level.

I never heard of that theory.

Very interesting.

They do an arc on this in season six of Cone Wars. Dyas' lightsaber is found, which leads Yoda and Anakin to find the planet that he and Dooku were on regarding Dyas' last mission. Apparently Dyas' body was burned, as is a Jedi tradition, but obviously Dooku operated outside the normal confines of the Jedi, and Sith alike. So it could be that Dyas and Dooku set up a plan so Dyas could be declared "dead" but still manipulate behind the scenes and bide his time until he could be visible again, this time under the monkier of Snoke.

I am definitely hyped now. It is Star Wars, but it feels different. Exactly what I wanted. I really hope this will be a dark movie.

Too many characters in this teaser. It makes me instantly wanna know who they are, what their background is etc.

Probably the closest thing we will ever get to a Mara Jade type character in a Star Wars movie now that she has been removed from canon.

Yeah, there is a rumor that he's something of an
Oppenheimer
character.

Well that works too. Definitely something he could pull off quite well.
