Stellaris - Paradox Dev Studios new sci-fi grand strategy game

Wonder if one of the races could be close to an Amnioni (GAP series)?
Love the name of their ships and their "genetic imperialism" drive. One of the 5 new races makes me sortof think of that.

Europa Universalis IV sold about a million copies and Crusader Kings 2 sold about 1.2 million.

What do you guys think, will this game do better?

PErsonally, I wouldn't be suprised if it hit Civ V levels of success. But I could be dreaming ;)

(Civ V has sols over 8 million copies on Steam).

Between being sci-fi and more accessible according to the devs, I think it'll do better

Ok, probably am. Maybe half that? (Civ V has sols over 8 million copies in Steam).

I think it will all depend on the initial reception of the game once it is released. Hopefully it can do very well at that. I don't think it can reach Civ V levels. Civ V is somewhat more casual and easier to get a grasp of than what Stellaris is looking to do, similar to the other games like CK2 and EU4. I imagine it will be a massive success in the long term assuming it is as good as I suspect / expect, but hopefully more so than even EU and CK.

It'll have legs but at the end of the day it's still grand strategy, one of the nichest genres. It being sci fi only balances out Europa's long, established audience.

£42 for Nova edition.

Going to have to shop around a bit :)

Yep. If the game is good it'll sell well, maybe even better than Paradox's non Cities Skylines games, but it's not going to sell like a Civ game.

I reckon it's going to be the best selling PDS title to date. A demo would obviously do wonders in showcasing their most "accessible" game.

Our plan is for Stellaris to become the next EUIV, with the same kind of life cycle and long tail of updates and expansions, and the possibilities are endless…

Am I missing something about the nova edition? One new race and a soundtrack does seem worth 10 bucks to me

It's a value call, right?

For me the new portrait set and soundtrack are totlaly worth $10.

The game is a 4X grand strategy game. In terms of value per gaming dollar, I doubt fans of it will be able to match it with anything other than another grand strategy game. This is likely to top my Civ V and Total War game time, easily.

I wouldn't mind seeing what the nova edition portrait looks like when it animates because the little animations add so much to some of the portraits we've seen already. The race that the Blorg encountered with the throbbing vein on their head looked suitably disgusting.

Then don't get it.

I'm positive the Race portrait will be separate DLC down the line, along with the soundtrack.
So you aren't missing much, It's more there if you want to support the developers.
Which judging by what I've seen I think its worth it.

But the normal edition is definitely the best value out of the three.

I'm in for NOVA pre-order, most likely through GMG.

If you've got the patience, it might be worth waiting to pre-order. GMG is famous for upping the discount ante days before release. If nothing comes about, that 20% coupon code will still work.

Gaming gods, give me grace to accept with serenity
the things that cannot be changed,
Courage to change the things
which should be changed,
and the Wisdom to distinguish
the one from the other in Stellaris.

Clicking one menu option at a time,
Trying to comprehend one moment at a time,
Accepting hardship as a pathway to fun,
Taking, as crazy 4x zealots did,
This crazy intense game as it is,
Not as I would probably want to have it,
Trusting that I'll find game guides that will make all things right,

If I surrender to just one more turn,
So that I may be reasonably happy playing Stellaris,
And at least kinda happy with it until I figure this shit out,
or maybe not until the next life.

This.

Also, Paradox usually lets you buy pre-order bonuses as DLC after release (EU4's Digital Extreme Edition Upgrade Pack, for example), so don't worry that you'll never be able to purchase the extra content again.

Agreed, even though they are some of the most difficult strategy games out there, there has been an explosion in new grand strategy players, I honestly never though I'd see a Paradox game hit the 1 million units sold milestone with EUIV and CK2 since their games and the genre itself is so niche. CK2 and EUIV became much more accessible games, getting new people into the genre, yet still retaining the engaging and depth of a grand strategy.

Also the long anticipated Hearts of Iron IV is on 6 June, this is a big year for the Paradox dev studio which I'm as equally excited for.

Have the developers commented on UI/font scaling? I assume they still aren't doing it but I haven't seen any screens over 1080p so I don't know for sure.

I just hope they can do the same with Stellaris.

Paradox is banging the "4X early-game, Grand Strat mid-late game" drum pretty hard, and I'm actually pretty excited to see their take on a more "casualized" design doc with the included 4X elements. But I only hope they don't lose sight of their grand-strat roots and swing too hard in the accessible direction.

Well, scratch that. Accessibility is fine. I just don't want them to dumb-down the game in the process. Paradox has also addressed this, saying they're not leaving grand-strat vets behind. So as long as they can keep that promise, I'll be a happy camper.

Oh man, I forgot about how shitty that is in CK2 with my 1440p monitor. Really hoping that Stellaris handles this better but it wouldn't be the end of the world if it weren't the case.

I'm in for the Nova edition! Going to pre-order directly from Paradox so hopefully they get more money that way.

Oh crap yes, 1440 is tough on the eyes in ck2. I really hope the have ui scaling.

The lack of UI scaling has kept me from playing basically any of their grand strategy games over the last several years.

I *really really really* want Stellaris though.

You have to basically press your face up to the screen and squint really hard. It's worth it.

Hm...spiders. Why does it always have to be spiders.

I think I'm good with the base package, and seems like a good value at that price. Signed wallpaper...really now.
