Honestly I would take Battlefield size maps and gameplay with the smaller building tactical elements and that would really take Battlefield to another level.

Keeping the scale but also focusing on the smaller scale encounter as you would have like in a Rainbow 6 type of game.

If anything, it would fit even better. Slower planes means it's easier to make strafing runs on infantry, no lock-ons mean dogfights have to be up close and personal, hell you could even drop grenades out of the cockpit. I think WW1 combat would be perfect for that BF-brand chaos.

I wasn't saying you were arguing about realism. I was saying you were ignoring the massive concessions other Battlefield games have made at the expense of realism in favour of fun while bringing up nonsense you just perceive to be realistic about World War 1 to argue that it would be a bad fit. Even if the things you are making up were realistic, they still wouldn't have merit as criticisms because no war setting has been portrayed realistically in any Battlefield game.

When you say that shooting through props didn't happen until the end of the war, when in reality it was happening 3 years before the war ended, that's more than getting a date wrong.

I mean, that's what happens when the entire industry seems to jump on to the same thing at the same time trying to appeal to the same people. Those people get tired of it. Then someone takes the first step in making something great outside of that limited area that a good portion of the industry seems to be targeting. And then suddenly that's what everyone is targeting. Rinse repeat.

A lot of people apparently. It helps that the game has dropped to $5-10 USD countless times in the past year, and the game has slowly been getting better and better with every patch. All of this of course is supplemented by DICE LA's support through the CTE and free map DLC. BF4 is most definitely a game I'd recommend to people looking for a new FPS to play on PC. Game is definitely still a looker, runs like a dream on even mid-range PC's, and its MP content is fully fledged out now. I feel like most mainline Battlefield games tend to have a lot of retention power. I remember still being able to find BF1942 servers in like 2008-2009.

I just want Rainbow 6 Siege to reach this status at some point. It deserves a second chance, just forgive Uplay... Now and then ;_;

Amazing, there is a relentless notion that the WWI was a static and utterly boring thing to make a videogame of.

You're right, it's still just a wrong date, that was a bit strong. I just mean that getting the date wrong in this case misconstrues a major aspect of the way the war was fought.

It's not a big deal, people just know fuck all about WWI, no need to get riled up about it.

In fact, this BF game would provide a great opportunity to teach some people about the realities of WWI.
 
My god if it is the 4*xp thing, then what a joke. Terrible marketing. Who cares about 4*xp the game has been out for ages.

Just preconceived notions people have, it's a shame really. Final year of University I got to write some really interesting essays and a thesis on WW1, my eyes were really opened to the reality of what went on.

You're right, I got the date completely wrong and airplanes had a bigger impact than I thought.

I just can't see that setting being fun. Why not go WW2 if you want a setting like that since it opens up way more possibilities? I think WW1 would be too restrictive.

I'm probably wrong again and I know someone will correct me, but infantry weapons on WW1 were mostly non automatic rifles and pistols right? Automatic machine guns were mostly stationary no?

The World War setting is great for games and FPS, fighting on a war ravaged european city is cool and all but if DICE wants this just go back to WW2 that actually provides considerably more gameplay opportunities.

Damn, I was hoping for an officer class that could go over the top with nothing but a stick and a whistle. That'll give old Fritz a damn good thrashing!

Of course, EA would make me unlock the stick by getting 50,000 teamkills in the Somme mission.
