Stellaris - Paradox Dev Studios new sci-fi grand strategy game

Sorry to break off topic slightly, but based on that sale can anyone recommend either Sins of a Solar Empire OR Gal Civ III? I'm desperate for Stellaris but I need something to scratch the itch for the next couple of weeks. Are either of them any good? How to they compare?

Big strategy game sale over at GOG
https://www.gog.com/promo/weekend_promo_paradox_stardock_150416

Includes several 4X and Paradox games.

Hehe. It's actually a "break" in the URL telling the website to sort out the region. =)

Own pretty much everything except Gal Civ III there... but that was pretty tempting. Then again, no idea when I'll really get to play it given Stellaris is just around the corner and I'm still neck deep in Elite and an EU IV campaign.

Sins of a Solar Empire is alright. I never played Gal Civ 3 but I hear pretty bad things about it. :/
Your best option is probably to nab up Master of Orion 2 or Sword of the Stars if you REALLY want to play some 4X. Stellaris is only 3 weeks away, after all.

I really liked Sins. A lot of great mods. But I would just wait if I were you.

Sins is awesome. But it is just conquest and nothing else. Think of it like Command and Conquer in space.

I'm usually not that big on owning game soundtracks (I've purchased maybe 5 in the last decade), but man am I glad I opted for the Nova Ed. pre-order w/ 2.5 hour soundtrack included.

Simply glorious.

Feels like a cross between classic CK/EU (duh, Andreas Waldetoft) and Mass Effect / Blade Runner (Vangelis).

Bravo, audio team.

Is GMG slow to process support on weekends? They answered my initial ticket on Friday, but didn't reply to my response, that yes, I want a refund in order to repurchase Stellaris with the greater discount. (Said they also could've credited my account with the difference, but I don't buy from them often enough to want that.)

Edit: Ah, just noticed I got an email. Guess I'm just doing a refund for the difference as store credit since the offer may not be live long enough for the bank to process a refund. Little disappointing, but good enough I guess. Just means I'll have to get something from them in the future.

Man, this game...

someone should do it in procedural generation. check off what you want the ship to do, how much it can cost, and have a "Mad scientist" slider the bottom to let the game know how freaky it can get.

I think in one of the images or videos there was an "auto-complete best" option if you really don't want to micro-manage at all.

It's the little things.

Yeah, that stuff adds up. It's not a big thing on it's own but I really apreaciate them going the extra mile with a lot of this kind of stuff. It's one of the things that I really like about Paradox.

Auto-generate designs and auto-complete ship. I assume those always give you the most efficient ships possible.

Heh, I really like the Xenophobe description.

I'd recommend Sins between that choice, however it's not exactly a 4x/grand strategy, it's a sort of hybrid as a RTS but with very, very light 4x elements, like diplomacy is non-existent but for everything it does, like the military conquest aspect is 100% great and I highly recommend Sins. You do expand to other systems, setup infrastructure there etc but the game is mostly centered around battle engagements, it's really awesome building fleets and having battles.

I don't recommend Gal Civ 3, it's in my opinion the worst 4x in recent years. A seriously buggy, unbalanced, and questionable mechanics design. I'd say you'd be way better of picking up the new Master of Orion reboot than GalCiv 3. GalCiv 3 has brought nothing new to the genre, it's actually gone backwards and introduced a lot of tedious aspects, and it's really, really buggy.

I've finally made up my mind:

Intelligent, Collectivist, Fanatic Materialist, Despotic Hegemony

The description for a Despotic Hegemony is both depressing and awesome:

This government is a materialistic form of autocracy, where citizens are viewed as little more than cogs in the state machinery. Efficiency and technological progress are valued above all things.

Seriously though, that extra research alternative is just too tempting. I was gonna go with Direct Democracy, but goddamn that could be good. Rare techs 4 days.

Thank you, and to everyone else that has commented on this. I think I'll wait now, as I don't think either will really satisfy me at the moment so will just look forward to Stellaris.

Oh cool.

Here's what I'm going to go with for my first game:

Summary
  • Scientists are eligible for Leadership
  • +10% Engineering output
  • +15% Growth time
  • +30 Leader lifespan
  • +1% Other species happiness per POP
  • +25% Physics output
  • +1 Research alternative
  • +10% Society output
  • -10% Xenophobia

A charismatic, communal, xenophilic, scientific race that has bad breeding capablities, but long lifespans, whose government is run by scientists. Think I'll go around uplifting species after experimenting on them for a long time. Then, eventually, they'll outnumber my species and the civil war will commence!

[portrait TBD]
Fanatic Collectivist, Despotic Empire
Extremely Adaptive (+++++)
Repugant (-)
Slow Learners (-)
Weak (-)
Summary
  • Can build an oversized military station

  • -20% Army damage
  • -15% Building cost
  • -10% Food requirement
  • +20% Habitability
  • -25% Leader experience gain
  • -1% Other species happiness per POP
  • +10% Slavery food output
  • +10% Slavery mineral output
  • +100% Slavery tolerance

All your future worlds belong to us.

Nope, GMG has a 25% off voucher for coming soon games.

"Watch25" is the voucher you want.

I would love to get the Nova edition too, how do I use the voucher? Do I just buy the game and at some point it asks me to put in a code and I just type: Watch25 and I get a discount?

edit: I figured it out, thanks for the heads up anyway :)

I'm thinking this:
Fanatic Materialist, Militarist
Despotic Hegemony (But science directorate also sounds awesome)
Adaptive, Intelligent, Repugnant, Solitary

Summary:
Can build an elite assault army

+50% Alliance cost
+10% Army damage
+20% Engineering output
+10% Habitability
-5% Happiness
-1% Other species happiness per POP
+20% Physics output
+5% Research speed
+25% Rivalry influence gain
+20% Society output
+10% Survey speed
+5% War happiness
+50% War tolerance

Still tweaking it a bit, but my first race might be something like this:

Summary
Can build a mausoleum, which grants -10% ethics divergence on the planet on which it is built
+100% Alien slavery tolerance
+10% Engineering output
+5% Happiness
+1% Other species happiness per POP
+10% Physics output
-10% Resource output without slaves
+50% Slavery tolerance
+10% Society output
+50% War tolerance
+20% Xenophobia

Going for a race of super intelligent and charming aliens who spend their time meditating and wondering over the meaning of life while they capture other races to force them to do all the physical tasks for the empire. The big question I still need to know is if the xenophobia trait still causes unhappiness living close to aliens if the aliens in question are slaves. If so I might need to go militarist instead and perhaps go despotic empire with that. Both options work really.

The real difficulty for me will be settling on an appropriate species portrait that properly represents my creation.

Although, is there any more info on stuff like "oversized spaceship," "mausoleum," etc. out there?

I can already see your species' peace-riots from over here.

Solitary people don't riot :+

I'll probably stay clear of war and try to play nice the first game. My people will be happy:

Ethoses:
Spiritualist
Individualist
Pacifist

Government:
Moral Democracy

Traits:
Charismatic (+)
Communal (+)

Summary:
-10% Army damage
+10% Energy credits
+5% Ethics divergence
+10% Food
+20% Happiness
+1% Other species happiness per POP
-50% Slavery tolerance
-10% War happiness
-25% War tolerance

I think they'll probably add modifiers/bonuses at some point for difficulty options like in Europa Universalis. For example in EU:IV on easy you get a bonus to things like reduced national unrest, war exhaustion, etc. I don't play it on easy or hard, normal is always just right for me.

Watching the Blorg series, they mentioned that difficulty will only be grades of negative modifiers for your own civilization, not buffs to computer opponents.

That's excellent. I'm going to do one run-through with the following:

Fanatic Materialist Xenophile ruled by a Science Directorate
(tentatively named the Kurzweilians)

Intelligent
Sedentary
Natural Engineers

Summary
Scientists are eligible for Leadership
+35% Engineering output
+50% Migration time
+20% Physics output
+1 Research alternative
+20% Society output
-10% Xenophobia

They have an almost religious devotion to the idea of creating a race of super-intelligent robots who will carry on their work, even if the robots kill them and everyone else in the galaxy in the process. They're xenophile in the sense that they don't feel it's their job to judge the worthiness of other species. They'll leave that to the robots. They also don't have any particular preference for war, peace, diplomacy or trade, and will do whatever they feel is necessary to further their research.

The problem is that I kind of feel like they'd use wormhole technology, but I think it would be more sensible to use warp or hyperdrive on my first run-through. Might just leave them until I have a bit of experience with the game.
