Ridley's exclusion was more due to balancing than technical power. Plus we have no idea where the NX Console lies in terms of power.
Sakurai once again made a comment about Ridley in an interview with IGN at the time of Smash Bros. for Wii U’s release. This time, unlike in the Brawl era interview, Sakurai explained why he believed Ridley could not work, citing proper character portrayal as the primary reason.
“I definitely know that Ridley’s a much-anticipated name for fans, but if we made Ridley as a fighter, it wouldn’t be Ridley any longer. It’d have to be shrunk down, or its wings reduced in size, or be unable to fly around freely. Providing accurate portrayals of characters is something I want to pay ample attention to. If I don’t stick to that thought, then we’d have to lower the quality or break the balance of the game.”
“Something that goes way off spec could break the entire game. Instead of going through a lot of very convoluted hocus-pocus to make Ridley a fighter, I figured it’d be better to keep Ridley as it currently is, the correct way, and have it feel like a truly threatening presence. There are other icons, too, like Metal Face and the Yellow Devil, which help effectively portray each of their world settings. They go a long way toward deepening the game world, and I think it’s been fun to experiment with.”
That's weird, your GIF is all messed up. Makoto's supposed to be there, but there's some lesser known idol in her place.
I doubt they'll be adding anything beyond the DLC characters and stages.
No, the point in the first place was "all versions will share the same roster" and I doubt Sakurai will change his mind.
In theory, the NX version would be seen as the definitive version, not having to maintain parity with the other versions. And given that the Smash 4 NX port is supposed to be locked in, unlike Splatoon & Super Mario Maker (both of which having issues with interacting with Wii U users), it's unlikely that there will be any cross-play with the Wii U version. Not to mention that the Wii U is getting replaced this year & the 3DS likely to follow suit next year.This. Why would they add NX exclusive characters to the same game? In addition, they didn't add the Ice Climbers in to begin with because the 3DS couldn't handle it even though the Wii U could. Why would the situation be any different for the NX?
I admits that we dont really know anything about Smash NX and what its going to be. I want to start with what we already know. We only have a rumor from Dr. Toto which claimed Smash NX is planned to be one of launch titles for Nintendo NX.

Im totally aware that people already know that Sakura is on an extended vacation. I think people might look into this too literally because it could meant anything depend on people's preference of word-usages. I meant, there is an article that Sakurai implied that his vacation might be short. I know it's easy to cherry-picking to temper our disappointments.
Breather
Ive been developing the DLC characters for Smash for 3DS/ Wii U. Ive been very thorough when making these characters, so I needed a lot of time. I havent been able to take a vacation since starting this project, but its almost over! I want to enjoy every day like its a Sunday. However, that doesnt mean my next job hasnt been decided already. So its less like Im taking a break, and more like Im taking a breather for a moment.
Sakurai could take a break from industry and let Bandai-Namco handle the port job. When the team is done with their port and code job with Smash NX, he could come back to development. If I recalled correctly, I remembered an article claims that Bandai-Namco working on porting Brawl to New Smash, and getting the prototype ready for Sakurai awhile he's working on Kid Icarus. (I might be wrong on that)
But short development schedule? We don't know what they are up to. It's possible that they wouldn't change that much between Smash for and Smash NX. But there is a chance they might do so we shouldnt forget the fact that they already have assets ready for 58 characters, stages, etc.
Also I would like to point it out that It only took Sakurai and his small team to make 7 characters, 9 stages and many Mii Costumes within 16 months which is pretty impressive. Imagine bigger team with 13 months. It only take two years and half to make 51 characters with a huge team, along with many contents like stages, single players, etc.
Sakurai is one of most proud developer so I'm not sure if he would like the idea of Smash 3DS/Wii U being a port job to Smash NX and just simply leave it alone. I meant he would rather to make Brawl over letting them port Melee with internet mode to Wii. A guy who shared information about Sakurai (the guy who got fired) said that Sakurai is very hand-on with Smash Bros Franchise so I could imagine that he's going to work on next Smash Bros (maybe for last time (Port or not,)) Also he really like to work on Smash Bros because he felt that he could work on interesting things, and he's unsure if team is ready to work on Smash Bros without him. Here is his statement on his opinion.
Its pretty difficult. If I keep making Smash, I get to work on interesting things like Ryu, but if I leave, I dont know if the staff could do it by themselves.
Regard with New Contents,
As for Smash, I havent changed the fundamental rules of the game (despite using new theme music each time). I havent made the transition to 3D, added any new gauges, or anything because even if those ideas might create new excitement, those changes wouldnt make the players happy. Of course, people still tell me the last game was betterespecially when theyre talking about a game theyve built into muscle memory over many years.
If I were creating something completely new and original, I might prioritize generating excitement. However, I feel creating Smash is a process thats very different from simply making a brand-new game. Just adding a single fighter becomes a show of public support for that character and their game. Moreover, each new title is built upon the tremendous number of Smash matches played over the years.
As a result, the mindset I had when developing this game was that the games rules are set in stone, but the fighters themselves are very flexible and allow for new, exciting elements. The fighters themselves become the sources of new excitement. Thats why the new fighters can do things the others cannot, to bring to life a number of battles that did not previously exist. Smash is much more extravagant in its design than other fighting games, development is difficult, and I have to deal with oversight from the original creators, but I have to do my best.
Sakurai already acknowledged that characters are the perfect tool to hyping up the audiences and to build up the interest for the audiences to purchase new Smash. Personally, I think Sakurai knew Smash is one of most high profile franchise and have the power to move the consoles, so I think it might be their best interests to include brand new contents for the fans to purchase the game again. I know it's very debatable with the fact it doesn't need new contents for some fans to re-purchase the game.
This is the limit for roster size!
When I think of a new Smash game, I do struggle with the previous bar Ive set for myself. Last time we had this many characters, but now I have to add even more. In this game we have around 50 characters, but I actually think that a rule of Smash is that an appropriate number of characters for a single game would honestly be around 20. In that sense, I think weve put in quite a bit of effort into this game. It feels like were climbing a mountain thats so high, theres nobody around who can say Ive made it up to here too! but people keep telling us you have to climb higher (laughs). I keep getting criticized about the characters that arent in the game. The number of characters in the game is honestly past the limit, so I think this Smash game is an amazing value. In particular, the 3DS version is only ¥5200, and having that many characters for that price is a steal. So I think it would be good if everyone enjoyed Smash.
He already felt that Smash for 3DS and Wii U already went passed the limit for Smash Bros franchise. Also it would made an excellent counterargument that we might not get any new characters in Smash NX. (I would like to mention the comments Sakurai made was in Jan 2015)
My final comment:
After those quotes, I just can't imagine that Sakurai would leave up the port job to Bandai-Namco and call it for day. I think Nintendo and Sakurai actually know that people would be excited to see more new characters, and motivated them to pick up Smash NX and Next Gen console. However I think it's best to expect the worst for Smash NX. Either it goes, I'm going to be there on day 1 if I could.
The thing is, the NX will be flat out replacing the Wii U, and the 3DS will probably get replaced in 2017 as well. There's no reason to keep parity with games on obsolete hardware.
Yeah, I actually thought same thing about DLC itself for few reasons;
- I'm pretty sure that Sakurai already planned to working on Smash NX during DLC development and already worked on the licenses and deals with other companies. The License/Deals mightn't allowed it to happens.
- Most of the fans already purchased the characters for Smash for 3DS and Wii U so they "could make the purchase transferable to next system"
- If they are going to bundle everyone in a game then they have to work out and split the money with 6 different companies which sound ludicrous to me.
I think there is a moderate chance that we are going to get Smash Bros 4.5 with new characters, stages and modes. I think Sakurai is willing to work on Smash 4.5 for NX because it would benefit him and the company in many ways.
- He always enjoy to working on newcomers and design their movesets
- To avoid the characters cut. He already expressed his dislikes toward to characters getting cut out of the roster. If he are going to do 4.5 then he don't have to worry about cutting anyone out of the roster.
- He don't have to start all over from scratch with Smash Bros which would minimize his schedule with current project so he can move on to brand new projects. Also it would minimize Nintendo's budget, and Namco's development schedule.
- Sakurai really enjoy to bring something new to Smash Bros franchise every generation (console-wise). I'm pretty sure that Sakurai probably want to develop new modes that would demonstrate the capabilities of new console.
- Smash Ballot. I don't really think they are going to do Smash Ballot for just one or two characters. I think they were planning to use Smash Ballot for Smash NX as well. Hopefully I'm right on that.
- Amiibo If Sakurai is going to include more characters then it could benefit them on long run by making more Amiibo for Smash lineup.
I totally agreed with you that we doesn't really NEED Smash 5 for Nintendo NX for several reasons. Anyway, did Reggie said that we only get ONE Smash per console? If he actually mention that then it would completely throw Smash 5 for NX out of the window.
Fine. But as long as we have Elma from XCX.
Wasn't Wolf built upon Fox to some extent? I definitely remember reading something to that effect in the last Smash thread.
Roy and Lucas came back because they were built upon Marth and Ness, so likely something could be done with Wolf, between Brawl's assets and SSB4's Fox assets.
The thing is, the NX will be flat out replacing the Wii U, and the 3DS is more than likely getting a replacement of its own (under the NX banner or not). There's no reason to keep parity with games on obsolete hardware.
THERE'S STILL HOPE

Don't start me down this path again, I've endured enough heartbreak with this series...
Though I can foresee some more DLC down the line for the NX version because I'm pretty sure it prints money.
I never understood the notion of "a Melee mode". I mean, that's literally developing a whole other game right there.
Wonder-Red please.
Even if we don't get new characters, I'd hope they atleast would finish the DLC characters.
It just boils down to three things: Giving them their own custom moves, giving them their own Palutena Guidances, and fixing their CSS positions.
I thought Sakurai was done?

He went on an extended vacation, if remember correctly (which would mean that Bandai Namco did the recent patch). But I think IntelliHeath has more details on the matter.I thought Sakurai was done?
Is Elma even the main character of XBX?
We ended up getting Robin and Corrin as our FEA and FEF reps, so I'd assume Sakurai would go with the customizable avatar character you play as in X if he really wanted a character from that game.
He's never done.
Fine. But as long as we have Elma from XCX.
Elma is pretty much the protagonist of the main story. The avatar barely has any involvement in the plot.
I doubt they're going to add anything worthwhile to the port, at least not on the level of new characters.
If anything I'd want them to include all the past stages. I found the stages available in Smash 4 to be disappointing, although having them all in one place would have helped.
Knowing my luck they'll add Icicle Mountain, Rumble Falls, and the small Guar Plain, then call it a day.
I second your notion on NX wouldn't follow the parity with Wii U and 3DS. They probably would follow parity with upcoming new handheld, or at least share the same game.
Fix thisI already have the game but I haven't open or play the game due to backlog.
Is that so? I already have the game but I haven't open or play the game due to backlog.
Don't forget that we thought the same thing about Wolf once upon a time. "Shoo-ins" don't exist, anymore. Just likely & unlikely choices.IF we are getting more characters and IF Ice Climbers work on NX ICs are pretty much a guaranteee. They were already worked on so it isn't low priority. As close to a shoo-in as you can get.
I think the problem is that Sakurai can't exactly port over stuff from 64 and Melee due to how old they are.
It would seem that he had to recreate Kongo Jungle, Dreamland, Peach's Castle and Hyrule Castle from scratch. Shockingalberto pointed out how different DL64 looked.
I think it's safe to say that nobody cares about Ice Climbers. There's only one veteran left that we're all waiting for:

Smash 4 doesn't really use shiny colors for the Pokémon characters (likely due to The Pokémon Company).I think his only hope at this point is if they retool him into Pichu Bros., where his attacks damage him only once his partner is dead. There's also costume potential, the Pichus from the anime, Plusle and Minun, and the spiky-ear and shiny Pichu from HGSS.
Fix this
Yup. Since the avatar doesn't have a predefined personality, Elma took over the role as the main character. Her role as the main protagonist is especially emphasized every time they address the main cast as "Elma's team" during the main story.

This guy gets it. The Smash community would simply stay on the Wii U if there's no means of wired controller support. Allowing the GameCube Adapter to be used in the NX Platform port would just be a quick & easy solution to appease the competitive Smash scene. The only thing that the game *needs* for the NX port is to retain GameCube controller support, the rest is icing on the cake for me.
Going back to the OP, it would be so awesome if they literally add in every character, stage, song, and mode that was dropped from the previous games. Although I personally don't use or play with Ice Climbers, it would be nice to have them back.
Supposedly the NX is supoosed to connect with multiple devices or something like that right? Well the reason why Ice Climbers weren't in SSB5 in the first place is because they had trouble programming them (or something) for the 3DS. If the 3DS is going to be compatible with NX then I doubt that Ice Climbers are coming back.

Expect it to either be a straight port, or Smash 5 built on Smash 4 engine.
I have doubts that all the third party characters can or will return due to getting legal rights again.
But with the delay of announcing the last amiibo in the Smash line, it makes me hold out hope for Ice Climbers at the very least.
Yeah, We know that Smash NX is coming but we don't know what it is. It could be anything from 1:1 straight port, Smash 4 NX with new contents or Smash 5. That's why it's quite exciting to see what kind of game it's going to be. I'm expecting it to be 1:1 straight port which is completely worst scenario for some people.
I'm pretty sure that Sakurai, Iwata and Namco-Bandai already decided to work on Smash NX long time ago. It's more likely that it might have decided during DLC development so I think they are going to regain all third party characters by adding the stipulations in the license agreement or contracts.
