You can also save up for future characters but considering how much FM everything else seems to cost, that might not be so easily doable

Arturo Sanchez, who is number 1 on the leaderboards, attends tournaments every week and plays online A LOT, has 140,000 FM. Just playing online gives nowhere near the amount needed to get everything for free. The game is obviously structured to make people pay.
You need to unlock those colors in survival easy, normal and hard
Is his Dhalsim already level 50 at least ?

Also this is not how pricing works. You pay for the value of the item in opposition to the rest of the game and not just the work effort.

It seems the bulk will come from the SP stuff upfront then regularly from daily challenges. The FM from matches seems just to be to top off your balance, really.
The daily challenges probably aren't coming until the zenny shop at least. They're not directly tied into the shop (or maybe they are somehow) , but how much you can earn will affect how much you might spend, so they're somewhat related.

But yeah, im cool with stages being expensive. 100K per character is fine.
I think if your one of those people that must have everything will have to pay. But this is designed in a way you get stuff with your fight money that you are interested in. So for example if you don't really play Alex and don't find him appealing don't get him. If you are not a Dhalsim player dont bother with his alt and colors.

So it sounds like maybe you can get your DLC character of choice for free. Pay up for everything else.
And there's really nothing wrong with that at all.

I did everybody's Story and Easy and normal survival for the first 16 characters along with Hard for one and had 420k FM.
Alex and Guile are currently free till the Zenny store hits so that's more FM.
The trials/Demonstrations also give FM.
Playing with a character online and leveling up also gives FM.
The daily challenges that will get added will also give FM.
There will be more SP modes and they might also give FM.
One doesn't HAVE to pay if they absolutely don't want to but the system encourages paying and incentivizes people to spend FM on the things they want, not everything.
With the content out now, it's pretty easy to get 3 characters without too much effort. Maybe four.
Anymore than that starts digging into beating survival on normal/hard/hell with multiple characters.
I have like 290k, after buying a couple outfits and colors.
Hopefully its ibuki next. I don't use her but i'm excited to see how they'll change her up and it'd be more interesting to have her style now instead of boxer.

Man...sf2 cast and popular character is general is hype for likely the majority of SF fans. People just like to beg for characters we haven't seen in a while. "Give me Eagle!"

Sakura, Sagat, Akuma, Rog. These are character loved and adored by fans and some pros are essentially waiting for there favorite characters to show up. Small rosters are usually easier to balance, but Capcom has been off to a great start so far with the roster. Everyone feels unique and plays different, nothing about the announced characters seem to jeopardize that. Rog up next, Ibuki, Urien, and Juri all play wildly different.
No one is SF so far has to be matched up against for hours and hours to learn how to defend against them. The closest thing to this is R Mika. And it's still pretty hard for her to just own you unless your opponent makes good reads on you.
