Dark Souls 3 PC performance thread

Titan X @ 1425mhz
24 GB 1600mhz DDR3 in triple channel
Core i7 930 @ 4.2 GHZ

All maxed @ 2880X1620

So far basically 60fps 95% of the time (slight dips on heavy alpha effects as usual as they spike pretty hard).

I am getting the load / save / pick up souls stutter though occassionally (perhaps all the time? I am not sure). I wonder what causes that.
How well is that 930 fairing with modern games?

How well is that 930 fairing with modern games?

There have only been 2 modern AAA games that do not reach 60 fps.
Star Citizen
Arma 3

I can basically still even go for 120fps in most games as I am not CPU limited there. I do not play ubi or rockstar games though. Still waiting patiently for the next hexcaore from intel :D

I got a new "feature" with the latest patch. I got an infinite loading screen when trying to warp back to main hub area. On the bright side I got to read lots of factoids about the game that I don't normally get to read because the load times are usually a split second on my SSD.

I'm still getting the occasional half-second screen freeze when certain things load in, such as an enemy about to land a killing blow or when I change equipment.

Would having the game installed on an SSD fix that? Or is this a current problem that plagues even the beefiest of rigs?

I've tried 3 different ssds and I still get it

So glad that the bonfire crash is gone! I wish they'd tell us what was causing it and how they fixed it. Not that they have to, but I'm really curious about it.

Game runs fine for me, no crashes. Occasional popping and item stutters here and there.

I'm now in the
catacombs with the skeletons
. I'm getting some very annoying texture pop in this place. Whenever i turn the camera, i can see some black or white blocks being filled with graphics/textures in the distance. This happens in other areas too, but in this one it happens often enough to be distracting.

I've started to notice stuff like that in the same area and beyond. I dunno if it's from the patch or what, but I'd swear my performance has gotten worse as I've progressed in the game.

The saving hitch is still my biggest performance problem though, happening every single time the game saves. Which is, of course, constantly.

Didn't affect the save stutter at all for me, and I wasn't crashing to begin with. A little transparency about planned technical fixes would be appreciated.

Is this the right place to ask why I got the super special Offline Only version of DS3 on Steam?
Because online does not connect. At all. Fails to log in every time.

Why wait and not get the current 5820K or 5930K? The next Intel cpus probably won't offer more 10-15% improvement.

So on PC with cross-region Matchmaking disabled I still get the floaty non-animated players and some seconds of lag.
Is this a common problem? My connection should be fine. (100/100)

As others have said, the new patch fixed bonfire crashes for me. Couldn't go more than a couple minutes without a crash unless lighting was on low before, but I played for 4 hours tonight on max settings with no crash.

I also learned that SLI is what was causing massive lag spikes/occasional crashes when opening certain doors/gates. The gate at the beginning of Undead Settlement and the Catacombs entrance were the main offenders. I guess that's probably a driver issue.

Just a blind guess, but I'd take a look at your firewall first off before doing anything drastic.

Checked firewall settings obsessively. Disabled firewall. Enabled DS3 on both public and private.

Ran as admin. Ran Steam as admin. Rebooted. Changed network equipment.
Uninstalled and reinstalled.
Tried clicking Ok 20,0000 times.

Quadruple checked I'm on the latest patch.

Used Network monitor to verify that DS3 was in fact trying to utilize the network.

NOTHING HAS WORKED.

Autosave stutters happen to everyone on PC. And to me it's a much bigger distraction than the frame pacing issues
.

Autosave stutter happens to everyone, but I'm pretty sure the frequency varies for people.

I've seen people say they get stutter every time they pick up an item, which is certainly not the case for me. For me at least, it's occasional at worst and rare at best.

I guess it's pretty daring of From Soft to release a Dark Souls completely devoid of an online component, but it is weird that there's still covenants. I wonder if online play was scrapped towards the end of development.

Patch fixed the crashing for me (GTX 780). Game looks and runs beautifully now. Still get stutters here and there but they're not frequent enough to be a distraction. I haven't really had stuttering issues, mainly crashing which is now fixed.

Haven't had significant stuttering issues. Maybe cause Im running it off an SSD?

I'm running it off an SSD and it stutters heavily during area loading and item pickups, and occasionally when I swing my weapon or block an attack with my shield.

My game is on a raid0 of 500gb 850 Evo SSDs and it still happens, so no. Thing is, what's "not frequenty enough to be a distraction" to you is game-breaking to someone more sensitive to it. I highly doubt anyone on PC has no stutter. Those who say they have none simply don't notice it or don't care.

As mentioned, the patch fixed the bonfire crashes for me. I wonder what that was about, really? There is some stutter, but not enough to bother me.

I'm trying to run this at 4k for the first time on my 980ti SLIs. If I set everything to High, I get 60fps flawless performance. However, once I choose max textures, the game crashes on load (game probably thinks there's not enough vram).

Any settings I can edit to load in on 'Max'? It's not a deal breaker for me, I'm just trying it out.

You guys that have the bonfire crash fixed, do you have 700 series Nvidia GPUs? I had a crash pretty fast after the patch and didn't think it was fixed for my 780ti. Reverted to older drivers as suggested in the other thread and had no problems since.

But I've been reading reports from people who play the game with no issues whatsoever.

FYI, IIRC Durante's article says that the difference in actual texture detail between High and Max is not very pronounced, except for the anisotropic filtering level which is pegged to the texture quality setting, so you'll want to force 16x AF at the driver level.

I get very very minor stutter when saving. I mean very small. Like a 100ms pause.
Other than that, the game has crashed on me once with 63 hours played.
I've played at 60 FPS pretty much constantly with rock solid frame times.

I was surprised to see so many people having issues with the game.

Unfortunately I can't find too much info otherwise, so this might have to do.

Have you tried SLI in the more demanding areas?
Regadless of the resolution with SLI 980s and i7 4790 Maxed i get anything between 45 and 60 depending on the area.
But the moment i switch to Single GPU in Nvidia CP i get solid 60fps on 1080p.
I expexted to be able to at least do 1440/60 maxed with SLI, so thats disappointing...

I've been playing at 1440p most of the game and have been 60fps stable. Outside of load triggers and other hitches, which will never get fixed in this engine, I haven't had issues with my SLI configuration. So far tested out a few areas at 4K and performance seems the same. I'm at
Boreal Valley

I mean that is completely something I could do, but I think I want that tiny bit of IPC improvement honestly at this point if I already haven't gotten a 5820K as of yet.
The idea is to wait just before Squadron 42 hits and get the best I can get for a reasonable sum. I did it before HL2/Doom3, I did it before Crysis, and I did it before Crysis 2 (lol).

SQ42 is the new upgrade beacon for me :D

i5 2500k @4.0 ghz
GTX 970 SSC
8GB RAM
SSD

I've only played through to the fire shrine or whatever, but I'm getting a locked 60fps on max settings. Game looks pretty damn good for a FROM game, and the 60fps makes the gameplay feel so much better compared to bloodborne on ps4.

Are you making any special or graphical tweaks to get SLI working? Turning it off was the only way I could stop crashing every death. My rig is pretty generic.

Setup:
4790k
980 SLI
16GB RAM
SSD
Windows 10 64
All drivers and such up to date

I haven't had any issues close to yours with SLI Titans X since the first and later drivers for the DS3. Generally, I would recommend reinstall the drivers using the custom > clean option. Then, if your cpu and/or video card is OC, whether by user or directly from manufacturer, downclock to the normal stock speed.

Just noticed that my character (or anything in the environment apparently) isn't casting shadows.

What's the deal with this? I have everything on high at least.

It's your hollowing level. When you become a hollow (as part of the Yoel questline) your character no longer casts shadow. It sucks and makes no sense, I know. Wish there was a mod for that. I'm surprised very few people are noticing this.

From what I understand, it's a story thing.

Did you take some free levels at some point in time?

It's actually a throwback to Demon's, iirc.

Not a technical problem. You don't cast a shadow when your character is hollowed. It happens after
accepting the free level ups from Yoel of Londor.

Oh.

lol.

You don't cast a reflection either. It makes your character look really out of place.

Objects and enemies don't seem to cast shadows either though.

Thanks, yeah.. Already did the clean driver install a few days ago after using DDU. Nothing is overclocked, so nothing to be done there. No issues with other games either.
