I'm going to be perfectly frank here and state that this is still behavior I find bizarre. And by that I just mean the type of people that seem to care more about whether or not their version of a piece of software beats only the direct competition's than whether or not it simply performs well. Mind you, I get it. If you're on the vanilla PS4 and a new piece of software comes out that performs like dog shit on it but runs well on the 4K, that's going to be something worth complaining about. But the concern of "oh no my experience is lessened because of the existing of a better, non-PC version" is not a particularly compelling argument to me.
I'm going to buy the PS4K either way because I'm a mug, have enough money and want the best console going, but I'm still annoyed about it. The reason I console game is because of the value proposition and simplicity of it all. I like the fact that at launch I can buy a highly subsidised piece of hardware, that will last me an entire generation, and be the sole development focus on a closed platform basis the entire time. With subscription and online fees, more games releases, higher costs and everything else, this suits me perfectly, as it balances out the costs on everything else. The PS4K changes that.
- It will likely lengthen the current generation.
- It will also split development focus.
- It will also be held back by then PS4.
- It will also cost a lot, and not be as subsidised as most new consoles are.
- It also comes out at a time where other more expensive hardware is releasing (NX,VR etc) that makes it more of a financial burden.
- I suspect it will also lend to worse vanilla PS4 versions of games.
Like I said, I'd have much, much preferred they just wait another 2-3 years and just release the PS5. Console generations needn't be longer than 6 years. At the end of the day, even when the new consoles launch, there's still some crossover whilst older gen ports are still released. PS4K even makes that transition harder for devs.
