Robbery or burglary, I understand and justified. Shoplifting/theft? Nah.

Hell, some stores won't even sign complaints on shoplifting. Makes you wonder why they even call 911 in the first place.

You understand shooting at a robber/burglary suspect?

Those words desperately need a few qualifiers.

Or is there just 1 type of robbery in america?

If they are escaping and aren't threatening you, why are you shooting at them?

I think we should use this system for a deterrent

A fool and their gun...the last thing they care about is collateral damage because hey, stolen clothes are that important. Attempted murder.

I wouldn't have missed. I go to the range four times a week to practice my aim. Can't wait for somebody to try stealing around me.

You can shoot someone robbing you either by force or use of weapon. Self defense laws allow you to use force, up to lethal to protect yourself from a violent crime, robbery is one. Home invasion is also a violent crime and the law allows a homeowner to shoot a burglar.

If they are fleeing? Only police are legally allowed to shoot a fleeing criminal, if it meets the fleeing felon rule.

If a lawful gun owner can prove that they faced danger during the commission of a violent crime such as Armed robbery or Home invasion they can use lethal force. There are everyday examples of robbers or burglars getting shot and sometimes even killed during the commission of their crimes by everyday citizens.

Is there a law in place that prohibits people from having a firearms license after such a display of a lack of responsibility?
