I felt a great disturbance, as if hundreds of animegaf suddenly cried out in terror, and their boners were suddenly silenced.
I think they are a little confused. The statement that was released said that Nintendo was responsible for content changes and Atlus was only handing the translation. At least that is how I read it.

These are just things that fans have figured out. There are also rumors of story content possibly being cut. Nintendo hasn't said anything.

I thought from their statement it was Nintendo making the changes to deem it fit for the west while Atlus was only there to localize.

I highly doubt Atlus made these changes independently. I would bet money that Nintendo forced their hand into doing so.
I'm not sure what caused Japanese companies to become so focused on making these localization changes in recent years. There doesn't seem to be an example of a game losing success based on complaints about underaged characters or TnA in general.
Although I guess with Nintendo it's the idea of fostering a "family-friendly" image.

Hm, I thought we covered this in the previous TMS thread? But either way, I highly doubt these are the only changes in the game.
After all if we've discovered this much merely from trailers and a small amount of pre-release footage, I would expect much more censorship in the end.

What's the point of bringing this super niche jrpg about pop idols that's so hardcore they're not even going to dub into english if they're going to censor things?
Of course none of it is worth the pitchforks and torches some parts of the internet I'm sure they'll cry for but why even do it? None of it was even in the same level of raunchiness as Fatal Frame V. Just rate it "M" and let them have it.

I hope you all still buy and support the release of the game, as it is a really good RPG and from whatever Western version reception I've heard have all been positive.
After playing the Japanese release the changes so far don't really seem that substantial with the only really worrying part is whether or not the story and character interactions change for the 2nd Dungeon and some of the side quest events since the approach for the localization of this game seems very sterile.
I would love to be able to play the game in English to see if there are any real story changes.
In the original Japanese release it was a CERO B game with really little, if any, offensive material at all and the story of the game really shined when it focused on the character interactions and their personal relationships and struggles in the entertainment industry. It really is a positive message by the end because for a lot of the game you felt like cheering on for the characters and see them succeed as they figure out things like how to deal their personal life and stage persona, following their dreams of becoming a part of the entertainment industry, and ultimately seeing them succeed and go from novices to more mature and established professionals in their field.
It's really a coming of age and self reflection kind of story and I don't see as much of an issue so long as they do not really change what makes this game so enjoyable and great in terms of the character interactions and development.
Are there any western reviewers or impressions that have also played the Japanese version as well? I really would like to know or see for myself since it would be a shame if some things had to change for a really good game.
As for the swimsuit DLC, it's not really as much fan service as what you get from a Tales game or in Persona.
The DLC scenario is just shooting a commercial and the characters interacting for a job they have to do, compared to Tales games or a Persona game where the swimsuit scenario would entail the characters picking up girls or partaking in an actual innuendo, fan service event.
I personally don't think the changes that have been confirmed at the moment are enough to really turn away from the game, but I would like to know how the translation would work from version to version, as the Japanese version has a lot of nods and references to both Japanese and Western entertainment.
There really is no reason to rate the game for 18+. No content in this game justifies that kind of rating as it is a 12+ kind of game.
The oldest character in the party is 21, which is Kiria. The youngest is a child actor Mamori, who's 11. Everyone else is between 16 and 18. It's still a coming of age story, but I don't really get the changes as there are plenty of child actors and entertainers in both the Eastern and Western entertainment industries.
This game isn't Yakuza 5. You're not out here hosting akushukai and dealing with fans that harass you. The game is really positive and it doesn't go into so much the controversy and scandals. But that's not a bad thing, because not every game has to have some kind of controversy or scandal to move the plot.
