Persona 5 getting an announcement on May 5, 2016

Yeah, rules out SMT4:F then. Next 3 months and it being Persona 5 is not really that new info as we know it will be releasing during summer, but at least it would not be September in that case.

I'm still standing with my July bet.

July is too soon. My money is on late August early September if not a delay to late October or November because of FFXV heck maybe even December to release it on Holidays.

I am ready Atlus.

They do? We often times see Vita versions of Japanese games dropped when they moved to the west, or in some cases they're brought over but only digitally while the PS4 version is the one that sees a retail release. So certainly on a worldwide scale they aren't moving the type of numbers that a PS4 game will or else companies wouldn't drop them.
Judging by the number of JRPGs we see on handhelds vs how many are on home consoles, I guess its safe to say that these games do way better on the former than the latter.

Even if they are rarely released here in the west, the Japanese sales alone are good enough that makes developers continue releasing these games on Vita and other handheld devices.

I expect P5 to be helped by getting a lot of visibility. When 2016 most anticipated lists were coming out it was on several from major gaming sites. This is always big when it comes to game sales. We saw that with Dragon's Crown. Previously Vanillaware's games didn't get a lot of press coverage, but along came DC and it got quite a lot. And it went on to be their most successful game to date. Once the date is locked in and Atlus can start to talk about P5 freely to the press, I expect to be seeing and hearing a lot about it form them.
I Agree, the game will be bigger than P3 - P4, especially since it will be available on a current (soon to be old) console. So, you won't get any argument about that from me.

I just don't think it'll be as big as you guys are hoping for. I guess at the end of the day all we can do is to just wait and see how it plays out. Even though I don't see it happening, I'll be more than happy to eat crows if the game does manage to achieve huge numbers like 2 - 3 million sales in its first year.

But didn't P4G sell much better in the West than Catherine?
By that logic, Catherine would have sold more in the west than any version of P4.
Unfortunately we don't have exact numbers for these games, but in case of Catherine we at least have this.

"It is fitting, then, that Catherine can boast the largest launch in the 20-year history of Atlus, and continues to see strong sales at retail."

Catherine breaks Atlus sales records

I don't think the same could be said about P4G. Though, I might be wrong.

I think 2 millions is easily doable, with 1mln in Japan anc the rest split between US+EU+other countries.

1 million in Japan alone? In the whole 10 years life span of PS3 in Japan, there are no more than 5 games did that. FFXIII amd RE5 made it pass 1 million. MGS4 and GT5 were close to it or they did it eventually, and that's about it.
When it comes to Japan console market, you just can't assume too much. And Persona is not as established as any of the franchises above by any means.

I don't see a reason Atlus US would hold back once Japan gets to debut it with their info. Only possible reasons are either they don't have a date or are holding it for some event. I highly doubt the former is true and as for the later, I don't see P5 getting a unique event of its own for the US and I also don't see any reason to hold that until E3.

I think it'd be pretty cool if they have the first english VA trailer at E3 (especially if it made it to the stage), but what do I know

This is a console game...that's going to have to weigh the other way around to hit that number. P4G shipped 350k in Japan by the end of 2014 (source: http://www.siliconera.com/2014/04/08/persona-4-golden-shipments-japan-cross-350000/); the original release did 193k its first week. It's going to do really well there but I think it's hard sometimes to see what a big number 1 million can be in Japan, particularly for a console RPG which will see most of its sales in the first 2 - 3 weeks before people sell it back. (For a little more perspective, on recent episodes the 8-4 Play crew has bantered back and forth on if FFXV will hit 1 million in Japan.)

I still think you're looking at 1.5 - 2+ million, but you're looking at the bulk of those sales coming from the US.

Im very confident Persona 5 will do at least 2 million. Persona 4 was a long time ago, PS4 owners dont have alot of JRPGs to choose from, it looks great, i think it will score really well.

Considering how meme worthy P4 became, the notoriety of the series alone should guarantee a good number of sales on the system. I'd say.

Maybe that it will depend on what Atlus will announce tomorrow, but maybe the information about the release in US (and maybe in Europe) will be kept until E3 to add one more game to talk about during the press conference.

Too optimistic.

Part of me wants to go to Tokyo Tower for the event, but I'm teaching the following morning so I'll probably sit it out and just watch the live stream.

Shit, I should know what this is but I can't remember for the life of me.

TWEWY? Devil survivor? I just know it's a DS game.
Best Zelda game of all time! Majora's Mask.

Yes dude. Let the disappointment in.

Come on guys! Where is your optimistic spirit! Atlus USA has probably had the game for a while now. I can't imagine that they aren't currently working on the translation right now. 2016 can still be real!

Will be my first Persona game. Mainly buying it coz it's a turn based RPG which has a decent budget and seems like a popular series. Hopefully it doesn't disappoint like the Tales series which I dropped after a few hours of Xillia.

What is your issue with Xillia? If it's because of the high abundance of copy pasta job on the field and general environment or big map with tedious collectathon, older Tales don't really suffer from this problem. I'd recommend Vesperia instead as the introduction to Tales series and then if you liked that, go with Graces f, then go backwards.

We are almost 24hrs away from the event.

I would really appreciate it of I could get a number on how many avatars I have to prepare for the guys that are in the #TeamSummer xD

So, how many of you guys are participating in the bet that's going on?

You are forgetting something important, Atlus JP. If they don't want the game to have western coverage before the JP release then there is nothing Atlus USA can show or do about it.

I wonder if P5 released around the same time as FFXV, which game would people buy and play first?!

Yeah, copy pasted locations, filled with collectathons, animu cliched characters, and the story wasn't grabbing me much either. It just didn't feel like devs put any love in to making the game. Combat was decent I guess, but it just felt like a B tier game.

May be like you say I started with the wrong one. I'll keep Vesperia in mind if I ever decide to revisit the series.

#TeamSummer (will be released by September 22nd) here.

I already lost the 2015 bet but yeah, I'm confident in #TeamSummer :p
