Wow, as someone who's defended Pokemon designs up until 2013, I'm massively disappointed with these. A fire cat and a water seal? It's a good thing Gamefreak didn't do that before! /s

The redeeming quality is the region. It will look amazing on an emulator. Also, was that Hoenn music that I heard? Fantastic.

Litten's boring.

Popplio's neat, but it's a bit odd seeing another marine mammal starter so soon. Still, a circus-themed sea lion is pretty cool.

Not a fan of either of the box legendaries. I love bats, but the Moon one still just looks odd.

Litten does seem really generic, and not quite up to par with what one would expect of a starter Pokemon - however, I do think Litten has the best potential in terms of its final evolution. A fire/dark type final evolution for Litten could look pretty amazing.

So far the Pokémon have only been part of countries (4 parts of Japan, NYC/NJ, northern France) so it could have been half of Hawaii, more like of Hoenn, one big island.

The legendaries are a huge step down from XY, to be far the bar was too high.

I think Rowlet will end up having the best looking final evolution, but I think Litten has the potential to have the coolest final evolution of the new starters.

I think it's going to be a challenge for the designers to make sure that Popplio's final evolution doesn't look anything like Walrein.

I wouldn't say inherently most interesting but the tropics tend to have a wide variety of biomes and that translates into really varied regions for something like Pokemon.

Bauz (bow-tz) is a great name, the rest are meh.
