Civilization 6 announced, out October 21st

Worth noting perhaps that the lead designer on this is Ed Beach, who was the designer of Brave New World as well. Here's his chance to make a Civ from the ground up rather than just fixing things, so hopefully it comes together well.

Stoked. Been waiting for this announcement, glad it's now official. My PC upgrade cycle revolves around this franchise, so I guess it's time for a new one.

Been wanting multi-tile cities since II! That's great. Don't really like the look of the game visually, looks like a mobile game, if that makes sense.

Nice summary. Basically 1upt won't truly work out until the average PC is many times faster so the game can actually accommodate sufficiently large maps and amount of units, with a smarter AI. But I doubt it's going away anytime soon since most gamers will find it more appealing on the surface.

While 1upt is more aesthetically and thematically pleasing, SoD is more like an abstract, concentrated representation of your civ's military power which is actually easier to manage.

Right. I have a slight hope that the basic graphics are so that they can build huge maps that actually make 1upt work - but I have my doubts :(

Sounds interesting, need to see more of the art style to know whether I like it or not.

But after how disappointed with Beyond Earth I was, this will be a wait-and-see affair, definitely not gettting it day 1 (unlike all the other Civ games).

you can already guess the tile density from the screenshots by imagining where the hex boundaries would be

the scale is simliar to civ5

we can only hope that they don't make ranged units stupidly overpowered this time around. and that they give us a peaceful way to move our units through that lone scout that sits on a chokepoint

They could still have changed the scale, but it would require changing the traversable distance units can move to match.

I'm a little underwhelmed at the art style, but I'll give it a chance since I haven't seen the game in motion yet. If they chose that art style for performance and visual information conveyance purposes, then I'm fine with it.

Always blown away how these games are constantly up at the top of the Concurrent players list. I have always been curious about trying this but never have. Why are they so popular? Is it the multiplayer component?

I've put hundreds of hours into Civ 5 without ever touching multiplayer. It's a complex game with an enormous amount of variety and (for me) wonderful to relax. I'm sure others can explain the appeal much better.

the movement distance won't be less than 1 hex per turn, so there's only so much they can do without increasing the number of tiles

maybe if they took each hex and divided into 7 the scale might be different, but the screenshots already reveal that that isn't what's happening

It pulls you in and doesn't let you go
"One more turn" is the perfect example

I am very worried about districts, it already makes no sense to have a city spanning multiple tiles in a game like this if the scale stays the same, and i also suspect that this is part of making small empires more viable ("tall empires") which is something they have wanted to do for a long time. It will also make workers less important, which has the potential to remove one of the most important strategical parts of a series that are already getting pretty shallow as it is.

Just incredibly addictive, and various options allow for the game to be tailored either to really breezy experiences or something much more unforgiving and difflecult. Can scratch a lot of different itches for people.

Now it's the best (or worst?) of both worlds! Stack (corps) management and 1cpt :)

Corps should reduce the amount of units occupying tiles though, at least in the beginning. Fielding lone units will probably be discouraged with big corps bonuses.

Yeah, Im not holding my breath. About ranged being overpowered, this is only in recent versions, earlier it was swordsman, and before that mounted units. Its simply almost impossible to balance this properly with the braindead ai, and i doubt that will change much, considering how hard it is to program a competent ai in a game like this - and its also not something that can be placed on the back on box the same way ncie graphics can.

It should at least be an improvement, but I dont know. If it will work like a promoted unit (say, a melee unit with a catapult getting city attack bonus), then it wont change much.

Exact same here. Almost 900 hours according to Steam, and I've no interest in the multiplayer.

don't know the source of this, but:
The happiness level will be focused on a city level, rather than on a global basis across your civilization

this can fix a lot of the problems with civ5 as well.
if you can make an actual empire instead of 3 cities, then all the combat might not happen in 1 place

Content wise they say it will include every feature from Civ V and its addons. So no dumbing down. It only adds new complexity with the new features like the new city building and tech tree changes.

They want £50 for this on Steam. Lol. No fucking way. As much as I enjoyed Civ 5 my limit for PC games is £40. Guess I'll have to wait for the price to come down.

I was very busy today and I missed this news I will catch up in a bit but can someone please tell me if this game is going to be more like Civilization Revolution or like Civilization V? because this screenshots look like Revolution thanks!

I am not crazy about the art and have some doubts about game direction. Their last game was pretty bad and while Civ 5 eventually turned amazing that was after 2 expansions.

I get a very blizzard feel from the games graphics.

Hows Civ: After Earf?

So bad it's been erased from the collective minds of GAF's Civilization fans, if this thread full of hype and "day 1" proclamations is anything to go by.

It was that bad.

Interesting timing for this reveal.

I'm sure this has nothing to do with Stellaris being released and being #1 on Steam. Nope.

And the fact that all they have is a trailer with no gameplay footage and a couple of rough looking screenshots certainly doesn't signal that this was done in a rush....

Not gonna lie, going from that amazingly detailed and beautiful concept art image too those actual game screens was pretty disappointing. While I'm sure it will be a good and deep game, the art style totally looks like a cheapy mobile game.

Looks great! I love these games, though I kind of only play like ~3 games because they are so time intensive, lol.
Holy shit, I can't believe they censored the exposed nipples in Liberty Leading the People.
I know, right? This is absolutely insane and feels like parody of that time Picasso paintings got censored:

I'm glad they thought of the children and localised this despicable part of French culture.

Graphics/art style are absolute poverty tier. Destitution. Civ 5 looks leagues better.

All the changes sound like improvements, though.

Football manager is always the curious one for me... Its like always a top 5/ top 10 game on Steam, every single year. Those guys play nothing but football manager.
