Pokémon Sun and Moon Starters Revealed. Releases November 18th 2016.

Warming to Popplio already, if only because it'll likely be the first starter to have access to super effective attacks against both other options (they all learn Ice moves, those Water guys - BYE OWL). Rival battles could be about to get even easier.

We've had two rivals since Gen V, one gets what you are weak to and the other gets what you are strong to.
Also since last gen all starters start with an elemental attack.

Gen V approach is king to me. No point in me playing Pokemon if I only see a handful of new Pokemon. I love seeing new and mysterious Pokemon at every turn. Plus, I have a living dex, so seeing old Pokemon does literally nothing for me at this point.

The individual mon are the reasons I play the game. New Pokemon means new combos of abilities, moves, stats, and strategies. I also like the Gen III approach with only a few oldies in the main story.

Heck, saving the bulk of old Pokemon for the post game is basically a really easy way to build that part of the game's content. It's something I think ORAS did right.

Basically, no we don't have too many new Pokemon, and no I don't want to see a huge amount of old ones in the main story. Having mostly new Pokemon available for a while makes the region and the gen feel like they have more personality to me.

What does this even mean?

I'd be genuinely shocked if the final form had clown-like features, or at least any more than Popplio already has. I really doubt he ends up fairy type too.
He's hoping that the clown nose goes away and I think it's sticking around. Also, a clown Pokemon makes me think fairy so that's my assumption for now.

I don't really buy the idea that Popplio is supposed to be a clown rather just a general performer, and I don't think Mr. Mime is a good reason to think clown Pokemon would all be fairy types. Mr. Mime is a fairy type because he's based on a fairy creature, not because he has clown shoes.

Mr. Mime has nothing to do with this my assumption.

That's not even the main island. I find it hard to believe that we won't be going to the island of Hawaii in a game set in Hawaii.

Honestly, I wouldn't be surprised if they did only Oahu for this game, it is home to about 2/3 of the State's population and leaves things open to do other islands in future games. That said, I really really want the series to visit the big island since I live here and it would be awesome to have my home in a pokémon game.

All this fan art, the animals the starters are based on and their appearances leads me to think that the theme for this generations starters might really be performers//entertainers. It'd be a really weird theme but could be interesting and love to see how they'd work it into the final evolutions.

Has anyone noticed yet that the last 3 water starters we got was a king, a samurai, and a ninja?

Now the court jester, Kefka Poppliozzo.

Oahu at most has 2 gyms on that island.

Poppilio is a seal. His nose is probably supposed to be the ball that seals balance on their noses at circuses. I bet money his nose gets bigger and ballier as he evolves.

Random thoughts but what kind of Pokemon do people want in these games. All new ones like in Gen 1 and 5, mostly new ones with old ones intermixed like in Gen 3, or more like the gen 6 approach? I kinda liked gen 6s approach but I'd want at least 100 pokemon this go around.

Mostly new ones, but also remixed versions of old favourites. Evolution being what it is. There is no reason why many of the characters archetypes couldn't have evolved differently ie Eevee.

If it's set on an island. Let's have a water type charmander called splashmander or squirtmander ect that would be a great way to change things up

Nah, that would look really bad haha

I'm replying Y now, and while it's better than I remember it I really hate Lysandre. I kind of hope the next games have almost no story.

You can't fit 8 gyms on Oahu. It's a medium sized island. There's no way you don't go to Hawaii. Hawaii is much bigger and you can put more gyms there.

I mean we've had some shit looking starters.

But yeah you may be right. Maybe he just carries a ball.

If that nose gets bigger it'll tempt me to break my tradition since Blue of always choosing the water starter first.

I'm glad Popplio has fans, I personally really dislike it but it's a good thing not everyone does. Hopefully I feel different about its evolutions.

Couldn't have said it better myself. My gut-level reaction to Popplio was incredibly negative, and I still think it's the worst-designed starter yet, but I'm glad that the little guy has fans.

Popplio is probably going to be one of those Pokemon that is only amazing because of how TV show will adapt it.

I hope Pokemon Contests come back in some big way because Popplio would excel with it.

We have 8 main islands, I also see it hard to justify one gym per island that way.. I guess they could do two gyms for each of Kauai, Oahu, Maui, Big Island, that might make sense.

Popplio was instantly awesome and adorable to me. I'm baffled there are people who think he's a bad design. He just looks so solid and huggable, with eyes that say "love me!"

I love his silhouette and little details like the white bits between his flippers. The whole concept of snorting out water balloons and using them to trick/trap enemies or as a springboard for acrobatic stunts is just awesome. So too is (what appears to be) the clown motif, with the cute ball-nose and frilly collar. :-3

Whatever he turns into, his base form will always be great, and a super-strong starter design!

Piplup was already.

Water Starters pretty much always have had the advantage due to common access to Ice-type attacks.

Emboar had Wild Charge though to deal with Samurott. And a Water-type move himself in Scald.

It'll be interesting to see which islands they use and how they decide to spread the gyms among them.

I know we didn't get to see the full Oahu, but it almost looked like we saw most of it.

You can just look at the island and know that's definitely not how it's going to be. The island only has 2-3 towns, 2-3 routes, 2 pokemon centers, and possibly 1 gym. They could do like 8 islands; 1 per gym.

Gen VI approach again. I want as much variety as possible. If it was up to me, I would have a regional Pokedex of over 500 Pokemon. A small Pokedex means AI trainers will eventually start using the same five Pokemon which gets boring quickly as we saw in ORAS.

If there's about an island per gym and pokemon league and they're all as dense as this island at least, then I'm going to be pleased.

Seals and sea lions are the same.

I'm hoping they go with the bubble creation stuff more than the clown aspects.

I'd say Popplio looks more sea lion than most of the sea lions in Pokemon that have more influences from seals. Exception of Samurott which is designed from a seal lion.

There is a rather large physical difference between a sea lion and a seal. Seals have tiny flippers and wiggle on their bellies, they have a ton of blubber, and they also have no visible ears. Sea Lions are often more slender and walk on their long flippers, they are often covered in fur, and they have visible ear flap.

Sea lions are also known more in pop culture for being entertainers at circuses, zoos and Sea World.

They are all cousins though.

Im just pointing out that for general discussion purposes, there's no difference between the two. You can use both words interchangably.

So I tried making my own Litten final evolution. Halfway through I realized I was making it more of a middle evolution:

Quiz: name the 5 Pokemon I killed to make this.

Definitely see some Quilava and Luxray in there, don't know about the rest.

That's one of the better evolution ideas I've seen, though. I like the flames coming out of the mark on Litten's forehead, it looks quite cool in that shape.

Same. If anything, the cat is the weakest design out of the bunch.

That looks really awesome! Best evo of Litten I've seen so far, even though it doesn't stride too far from the first stage. The flames are especially nice.
