I'm really only follow this for the robot.

Proof that new Macross is enjoyable.

You can't really change the thread title back because when you try to edit emojis on the forum it goes from emoji to

The thread title was fine for more than a month, I don't see why it had to be or should be changed. I don't think most of us had an issue with it, since the title itself was relevant to the series and topic at hand.

Anyways, does anyone have a replacement title? I would prefer that the title go back to what it was originally but that probably won't happen.

So suggest away, a new topic title that is.
Claudia just made a pineapple salad for me...
The ED song is so catchy. I've got it on repeat now.

I like this suggestion:
Truth is truth. Sheryl da bes.

Frontier is what got me into modern anime, so I'll always have a soft spot for it.

Ikenai Borderline is the greatest song ever though. lol
preach it fireguy.

re-watch of ep 6, and the ending preview gives the impression there will be little vf action next ep. :(

also i'm terrible with coming up with titles. i miss the old one.

Well, then...
Have all five of these women been called by name in the same episode?

Ep 22:

My god I hope they deus ex some bullshit and Sheryl doesn't die. I'm coming to the conclusion that Alto didn't really reciprocate anything with Ranka and Sheryl cause of his mothers death. He seems to have made some sort of peace with it though cause he's really torn up over Ranka leaving and the news he received about Sheryl. Ozma finally called Alto out on his shit. He needs to find his own purpose. Alto clearly stepped up his piloting game though.

Finished Frontier this morning. That shit was so fucking hype I loved it. I'm glad Sheryl didn't die, but whelp Alto never picked his waifu though it sort of seems like he picked Sheryl. The real main villain came from out of nowhere though towards the middle half. "Vajra just wanted to understand you fools" that's why they kept eating people...it's like if Blue Gender tried to pull the "they just want to be friends" trope for its ending. All in all though I loved dis shit, too bad the ending didn't really wrap up everyone's personal drama. I would've liked having a young Sheryl flashback ep though about her training and pulling herself up by her boot straps and what not. Anybody know why she cosplays as M Bison when she sings? I'll most likely start M7 tomorrow.

It's more that they
kept trying to "rescue" people who had the vajra symbiotes inside of them (like Ranka), since it made them think they were one of them. In the case of Ranka they thought she was a Queen. Sheryl was incomplete until she got hers moved to her stomach.

Everyone knows Sheryl won the waifu war. How do you turn her down for kid sister Ranka? Not even a contest.

Best part of the final battle was Battle Frontier on Battle Galaxy giant robot violence. When it just punches Battle Galaxy so hard it breaks apart. My mecha erection couldn't get any harder.

Caught the first 2 eps so far and I already like the lead guy better than Alto. Animation is a little all over the place, but story is looking good

Watch the films if you want a definitive end to the love triangle.

First part makes sense. Second part Sheryl is great. She really did open up a lot compared to her first appearance. I was wondering what Ranka did to her, sounds like Ranka cured her then. I actually liked this love triangle a lot more than HikaruxMisaxMinmay. I cared about both idols and Ranka was pretty much the wrong choice mainly due to how awkward it would've looked and I don't think Alto loved her like that any way. Yeah Ranka pretty much is just the kid sister to Alto and Sheryl and I actually just wish there were maybe at least two or three episodes after for them to just hang out and chill. Too bad Alto's most likely never popping up in Delta dressed as a woman. I read Issamu was supposed to show up in Frontier but I either never saw him or they never said him by name.

Best part about Hayate is that he's not weighed down by earths gravity like Alto...

She
moved the vajra symbiotes from her brain (where they were killing her) to her stomach (which is where they are supposed to be). She basically turned her into another Vajra "Queen" which is why their fold wave manipulation was able to free the controlled vajra from Grace.

I caught most of that in the show, just didn't know about Sheryl being turned into pretty much a second Queen. Never saw Sheryl helping to kill her cyborg manager coming. So pretty much Grace used her and I'm going to assume a bunch of other unnamed people in experiments to manufacture a Vajra Queen that they had full control of?

Does it really though?

Alto leaves, his planet needs him. Will he ever be seen again? Who knows!
I didn't know of this either until it was posted here, it made be quite happy:
Kawamori has stated in a interview with Animedia that
he was amused and surprised that people's sadder (and inaccurate) interpretations when he assumed he was "obvious". He confirmed that Alto is alive and returned to Sheryl when she woke from the coma at the end of the movie. Plus the final song of the movie with Ranka and Sheryl singing is supposed to be her "Welcome back" concert.

Why do I feel like the only insane one on here for liking Frontier?

Frontier is my favorite Macross stuff. (I like Zero more, even if its sensibility drops off a cliff past the halfway point, but it tiptoes in-and-out of Macross territory and categorizing it with the others doesn't seem fair). Looks great, sounds great, it's got a bunch of good characters. It's quality, popcorn entertainment.

7 I... hate? I'm not sure 'hate' is the right word. I'm apparently the crazy one, but I think 7 is a bloated mess. It should have been a OVA with a handful episodes. Maybe a 13 episode TV series. Definitely not the 50 episode mess it is. 7 also has some pretty basic problems, like establishing characters I can identify with and care about, which seems to be its aim but it fails at completely. You'd think Basara should be the hero, right? But he's bizzare ('Basara', eh?) and distant, and instead you follow some stupid kid around for a... coming of age story? as she learns more about Basara and music and life... very slowly and while dealing with bad, '90s comedy hijinxs.

I bring 7 up because I see allot of people on GAF cite it as their favorite, which is bizarre to me.

Interesting. So pretty much it sounds like M7 is about as divisive as ZZ Gundam for example. I found it too hard to really hate Frontier while I was watching it so I was shocked to find out that it's not liked. The VF-25 is great looking, the characters are good. Most of the side characters get attention thrown on them as well. Take Klan for example, I wasn't expecting to feel anything for her when I first saw her, but she became a really good character at the end. Sheryl's a great idol and seeing her growth and softer sides was great. Kawamori knew he couldn't kill that off and the damn soundtrack was fantastic.

Gamlin is that character, Macross 7 is the story of how he falls in love with Basara.

Though I ended up liking most of the characters in 7.

7 is a pile of shit. It is easily the worst Macross for how long and bloated it is. So many episodes are repeating the same thing, piss poor animation, etc.

Yet, its a lot of fun too with just how ridiculous it is. It's a lot like why people like Batman and Robin or other bad movies.

I legit learned to love Gamlin by the end of the series.

You take that back.

I guess the emojis had to go.
yeah, i guess it's better than that barebones title =/

M7 really is the ZZ Gundam of Macross.

i think it is, though each is different in their own way.... (ZZ starts out comedy then get serious, M7 is just ridiculous that you get used to it.) one thing in common i can say about both: if i weren't a fan of Macross/Gundam, i wouldn't have given either a chance to let it develop.

I don't know why Shun didn't use any of my suggestions for the new title. Something tells me that M7 is better the second time you watch it, if you survive watching it the first time that is.

M7 gets better and grows on you bc that guy is freakin persistent if anything.... i just was really into the macross universe. i wanted to know what would happen next, so i watched it all the way through.

after M7, all the corny stuff in delta and frontier is easier to swallow bc you're conditioned by basara.

Hm, for all of those explanations regarding the final Frontier film, they really seem like the sort of details that Kawamori should've actually included in the films themselves, rather than claiming after the fact (that's all rather important information to just omit). I say this when looking at it from the Death of the Author perspective.

But, seeing as the events of the films already represent an alternate continuity from the series anyway, much like DYRL vs. SDF, it could also be argued that such nitpicking matters that much less.

Frontier movie made the series continuity better, much more so than the TV anime.

The original TV run had so many flaws to it despite having good music and cool robots. The movie just improved it in every way, tho it still could be better.

I find Delta overall more enjoyable and better than Frontier other than in the music department, but Delta isn't bad.

I mean the whole skirt propulsion shit was used by Alto in Frontier movie 2.

The films, in some or most cases, are better canon for the series anyway.

I actually find Delta cornier than Frontier.

I need to see Alto in a jet skirt.

As someone who finally managed to finish Macross 7 last night, I kind of agree that it is an incredibly messy series.

However, it still managed to entertain me throughout and the payoff in the final episodes really was amazing.

The weakest parts to me are definitely the large amount of repetition, and the designs for the Protodevlin.
They might have made one of the most obnoxious characters ever with Gavil and his stupid lines. "Beauty of Retreat" "Beauty of Conquest" "Beauty of Explosions" etc etc. someone please throw him in a goddamn volcano.
究極の溶岩美!

The payoff in the end would have still retained the impact even if the show were half as long. You just get a lot of failed attacks by Protodevlin and scientists who waste time somehow not fully connecting the dots that Basara's singing is the key.

I also don't like a large majority of the mecha designs. I am not as picky as the artists I work with who seem to despise them, but the Sound Force Valkyries are pretty meh to straight-up ugly in my opinion. Mylene's is basically the worst Valkyrie design in the entire series as far I am concerned.

The two exceptions for me were the VF-22 models that Max and Miria pilot:

vf-22-fighter.gif

and the VF-17D series that Diamond Force pilots

vf-17d-fighter.gif

I actually really like this Valkyrie design because it is has a unique silhouette compared to most other Valkyries which tend to have F-14 style wings or the inverted type such as the VF-22 above.

Gamlin was also probably the highlight of the series to me. He really does have some good character development, especially in the later half. I especially love that moment when they are
invading the Protodevlin planet and he admits that he was jealous of Basara. The fact that Veffidas immediately fills the awkward silence with a teasing symbol hit on her drum set had me rolling.

Overall, I really enjoyed the series but it does have plenty of flaws and blemishes.

Mac 7 is probably less divisive than ZZ is. It's probably because the strong points of Mac 7 overshadow the bad points it has. At least in Japan, the message, situation, and Basara himself resonated with viewers pretty well and made it a fairly popular and memorable show for folks growing up then. Most recognize the problems it has but the heart and passion the series has is really unique in general.

Frontier really isn't a surprise. The character relationships are pretty thin, the story doesn't really do anything, it has no purpose in mind for everything that happens, etc. The show doesn't really build towards anything at all.

Gamlin is that character, Macross 7 is the story of how he falls in love with Basara.

Though I ended up liking most of the characters in 7.

This isn't that far from the truth actually, lol. Gamlin and Mylene are supposed to be the audience viewpoints within the story. Their views on Basara reflect the journey the audiences goes on throughout the series from going "WTF are you doing you idiot!?" to admiring/respecting him for the resolve and beliefs he has towards music and his goal.

I don't know why Shun didn't use any of my suggestions for the new title. Something tells me that M7 is better the second time you watch it, if you survive watching it the first time that is.

It definitely is an even funner show the second time around because you can watch for little background details the writers and animators put into the show. A lot of the enjoyment of the show is also derived from the worldview the show creates which makes it easier to watch a second time than one that's really focused on a story.

Oh another positive point for Macross 7:

Pointless flower-girl!
I kind of love how they really lead you to believe that she is some key character waiting to be introduced or whatever and she actually never speaks a word.

That is definitely on point and Gamlin literally saves the day in the end,
by swallowing his pride and singing to help wake up Basara.
When that happened a huge speck of dust found its way into my eye....That's all it was I promise.

They might have made one of the most obnoxious characters ever with Gavil and his stupid lines. "Beauty of Retreat" "Beauty of Conquest" "Beauty of Explosions" etc etc. someone please throw him in a goddamn volcano.

Whattttt Gavil is the best. How can you not appreciate the Beauty of Beauty.

Whattttt Gavil is the best. How can you not appreciate the Beauty of Beauty.

I will take Pointy Boobs McGee and her shrill screaming over that idiot any day. Sivil is best Protodevlin.

His lines sound so incredibly corny to me in Japanese, and I have a pretty high tolerance for anime BS!

The YF-19's been my favorite design for awhile. All its modes come together really well.

But the VF-0 is a very close second favorite. It may not be as classic as the VF-1, but I think its proportionally smaller cockpit improves its look over its predecessor/successor.
