As an R9 290 owner myself, I'm also holding off on getting a gsync or freesync monitor till the dust settles on this years' Nvidia/AMD releases.

The way it's currently going I'm leaning towards getting whatever replaces the X34 w/ Displayport 1.4 (so hopefully ultrawide 1440p at >100hz) and a 1070. Will be getting the 1080TI or Titan when they get around to it.

I have this combo , you'll do fine with it. You'll be around 30-40 FPS on High Settings some Ultra. It will feel like playing in 60FPS because of the smoothness.

However.

For 1440p I've realized that you want a more powerful card overall if you wanna stay on the high-end of the graphics curve.

I just know I definitely want IPS and Gsync.

Depends on the games you want to play and the settings you want to use. 1440p is quite a bit more demanding than 1080p (which makes sense as 1440p has ~77% more pixels).

Also you should think about if you really need a 165hz display. I have the same display with a 980Ti OC, and as it turns out I don't really make much use of the high hz range. I am lucky to get 60 fps on games like "Rise of the Tomb Raider" or "The Division" at 1440p/Ultra settings. Other, less demanding games obviously run with higher framerates, but I don't really play that many of them.

And there might be dimishing returns for some people. I can see differences up to maybe 90-100hz. Above that it get's difficult for me to see a difference. And while something like 80fps certainly feels nice, I'm usually fine with 60fps and I try to increase image quality as much as possible instead. But this might be different for you, depending on the type of games you play. I'm more into cinematic singleplayer games like "Rise of the Tomb Raider", "Batman: Arkham Knight" or "Assassin's Creed: Syndicate". That's also why my next monitor in 2017 probably will be a 4K 60fps HDR display instead of a high hz display. But if you prefer multiplayer shooters and racing games, you might have very different priorities here.

So I would think a while about this, maybe you could save a few bucks as the XB271HU unfortunately is not that cheap, and use the money to buy a GTX1070 in the future. But I agree that IPS and G-Sync are must-have features.

If panel manufacturers keep up their game you shouldn't have to pick between Gsync, IPS, 4k, High Refresh and HDR by then as long as you're fine selling a kidney and/or other organs :p
Man. I'm probably more excited for the new DP1.4 generation of monitors than I am for the new GPUs. I haven't had the pleasure to see HDR in person, so I wonder if it's really that huge of a jump as people make it out to be (then again I thought the same about Gsync :D).
 
I've never heard of displayport until my recent GPU upgrade and definitely have never used it.

If I wanted to use my PC with a monitor using displayport, is it still possible to hook up an external audio source? I have Sonos equipment, so want to make sure I can still utilize it.

How many frames are you getting on Witcher 3 max'd? I get around 45-50 with almost everything maxed out.
 
I'm confused about a setting on the nvidia control panel, there's a Vertical Sync option which I don't if I should set it off globally or just leave it as is, the Monitor Technology is set as GSync.

My new high refresh rate monitor is on its way! Not adaptive sync, just 144 Hz. What should I check out first? So far I'm thinking:

Unreal Tournament
Trackmania
Rocket League

Any other suggestions? Maybe something 2D?

Just got my PG279Q on Saturday (no major backlight bleed or dead pixels, fortunately) and the combination of IPS + 165hz + G-Sync is a fantastic upgrade over my nearly 3 year-old VG248QE.
 
So I've asked about 4K displays in 3 other threads and have been completely ignored; hoping this is a good place for some info. I'm gung-ho on 4K after the 1080 and DOOM but need monitor recommendations. Is the Predator XB1 the way to go? Should I even be worrying about G-Sync with a 1080? (assuming I'm quick enough to nab one!)

I have an OLED TV and for gaming I prefer using my X34. While the PQ is a lot better on the OLED it doesn't make up for no G-Sync or high refresh in my opinion. Hopefully we see a product that combines the two technologies soon :)

depends on what type of games you're playing and what settings you want, if you are looking to play the latest titles on high settings at 4k then gsync is something you should want
 
I feel like a 40 inch 4:4:4 4k set is a much better value than a gsync monitor.

Depends on if your priority is resolution and screen size or high refresh I guess, but 40 inch 1:1 scaling at 4k is sweet with that screen real estate, not to mention better for other media.

Absolutely the latest titles on the highest settings, preferably locked at 60. I'm building this PC to chew up Doom on Ultra Nightmare... as much as that's possible. Predator line the way to go?

iirc there aren't many 4k monitors that support gsync at the moment (i think i saw a few acers and one asus model) so that should narrow things down considerably, read some reviews and decide based on your budget and whatever features you value most that differentiate them etc.
 
Upgraded to dual 980s a couple of weeks ago, and I've just recently started looking at some G-sync capable monitors. I'm interested in purchasing a 27"+ 1440p panel in particular, but I'm also somewhat concerned that performance would take a hit with the higher resolution. Anyone else with a similar setup? How do most games fair with dual 980s and a 1440p G-sync monitor?

A single 970 can power 1440p pretty well I would assume dual 980s should be able to max most things out at 60fps depending on the games scaling.

The latest titles locked at 60 FPS at 4K? I think you'll have trouble with that even with a GTX 1080. That's a *lot* of pixels. Stick with 1440p.

I will buy 2 1080s if I have to. This is happening. I can't sit here and continue to NOT play Doom, and I can't play Doom in anything other than PERFECTION.

And then you're stuck with SLI baggage. It's fiddly and you're dependent on developers that often treat it as an afterthought.

If it makes you happy, sure. I've just found that a single high-powered card is the way to go.

Oh I know, I hate SLI; nothing but headaches and poor support. I just wanted to believe that 4K/60 was achievable today but now that I've perused the 1080 benchmarks it simply isn't (at the highest detail settings). I don't think I can wait, though, so I'll just be happy with 4K/45.

All games support gsync. Some few games may have still limited gsync support by not allowing to disable vsync ingame.

gsync is both varying framerate and varying frametime. To get the second, you need to be able to disable vsync in game.
 
I'm way too excited for a 3440x1440 144hz gsync monitor now that we have new display ports.
Can we expect announcements at computex for high refresh 4k or 21:9 or is it still too early?

Not sure about 4k, but 21:9 most likely.

I remember reading something back in like January about Samsung readying up 3440x1440 144hz VA monitors. Probably would include some sort of adaptive sync.
 
Really happy about the new nvidia GPUs offering DP 1.4 connectivity. I own a Gen 1 ROG Swift, but I also have a 4k monitor. While I love the PQ of 4k, I had to eventually admit that I'm not cool going back to 60hz from 144hz and GSYNC.

With DP 1.4 connectivity now available. I really hope 4k/120hz/GSYNC panels aren't far behind. I'm thinking the Pascal Titan/1080ti will allow us to enjoy 4k in GSYNC sweet spot (40fps+) based in the recently released 1080 benchmarks.

I started playing the Witcher 3 on Ultra preset last seeking, with Hairworks enabled. Using a Titan X, I'm getting incredibly smooth gameplay around the 50ish fps area because of GSYNC. To the point that I cut the Afterburner overlay off. I had a driver crash that took me out of GSYNC mode while still in game, and the difference was very noticeable. Same fps but I could clearly see that it was choppy and inconsistent. It's actually how I realized GSYNC was turned off in the first place.

Worth every penny.
 
So when Dark Souls 3 drops to 50 fps it looks like it runs like shit. Almost feels worse than 30fps on consoles. Does Gsync fix stuff like this?

You can see a simulation of how G-Sync helps on this website. Obviously this is not a perfect representation, but it's pretty accurate for people who haven't seen it working in person.

I got a Dell 2716DG last weekend and there's something that bothers me.

When I enable the G-SYNC Indicator in the nVidia Control Panel I get a "G-SYNC ON" watermark on DX games, such as The Division, demul, etc :P

The problem is that on OpenGL games, specifically Doom, but also in GFXBench GL, I get an ugly ass watermark that says "NORMAL" instead.

Is this normal? Can someone check what they get in Doom? I'm worried that my setup is somehow botched and G-Sync is not working. The monitor still OSD says G-SYNC tho.

That problem aside, how's it compare to your previous monitors in terms of sharpness and the Gsync effect? I'm interested in that Dell model specifically and am running a 970/3570k/8gigs of ram at the moment and thinking about Gsync as a next step.
 
Any chance of high fps 4k monitors now that cards are going to support DP 1.4? I know I'm not going to get 120 fps in any game at 4k outside of Half-Life 1 or whatever, but simply being able to choose between high res and high fps would be nice.
