Gran Turismo Sport Unveiling live stream discussion (incl. FIA Championship gameplay)

I feel a lot better now compared to when I watched the event the other night. Suspension model looks improved, and it was quite good already in GT6 I think. Lighting looks great. I really could do without the gravel surface tracks though, because it looks like crap, and rallying has never been good in GT anyway in my opinion.

Trying not to read too much into this but this could be big news.

It will be interesting if they show a "proper" trailer for E3?
the neo version?

Whats certain is, the game still needs a ton of work.
I dont know if 6 months are enough.

Well, if there's one thing we know about PD, they're pretty good when it come to post-release support, so even if the game comes out a tad rough (not that it should be, given the amount of time they've had on it) we know they'll fix it up eventually.

But none of them had ever been modeled at a premium level, so that's the exciting part for those that like the brand.

Ah, I didn't think of that part.

Hopefully they aren't just going for the more recent models like the RGT8 and its GT3 variant, I loved the BTRs and CTRs in the past games.

Honestly, I wish PD would be straight up honest about a lot of things and get a community manager that offered feedback on a regular basis. They seem to operate in isolation and as cool as it is to have a team dedicated to core fundamentals (car modeling, in house from the ground up tools, etc.) - they are missing the plot on the modern day racer.

Evolution dying couldn't have come at a worse time. The GT Planet forums are rife with disappointment. Sony owns the files/data to Drive Club- which legitimately is the best looking/sounding racing game I've ever seen in the driving genre. Why couldn't Sony have wised up and had GT Sport be an international effort with international input? Yeah, Evolution's online was jank and the team bit off more than they could chew, but in a lot of ways PD can learn a lot from just playing with Drive Club. I have zero idea why they wouldn't at least entertain the idea of hiring the modelers at Evolution and have them start working on tracks/cars/sounds etc.

Come on Sony, your better than this.

I personally don't like the engine sounds in Driveclub. They sound like they were just recorded in a warehouse or something. I'd be disappointed if their goal was to sound like Driveclub.

Yeah its really weird why Sony has not pushed to make Polyphony Digital grow into a bigger studio. Its like Kazunori Yamauchi demands complete and utter control, no one else has a say.. his way or no way at all.
I see no detriment at all to having more people creating more assets for a game that takes a lot of time to build. Its baffling really...

More impressions.

Okay so about the game, like most I was definitely skeptical after that /stream/ yesterday.

Anyways the menus are so nice and polished, you can use the analog stick to actually freely browse like a mouse and the load times are next to non-existant. Even loading up the game, although on a cut-down copy I know, was almost instant, I wish I joking.

The car selection screen is a huge improvement, nice mix between function and form. Not too sure what the steering assist does since I never selected it. Menu music is awesome btw.

First thing you (sometimes) notice when the race starts loading is some engine noises as they go by on the race start screen, those sounds are much improved. Once again the race start menu is so clean.

The HUD is GREAT, looks fresh but very GT and is useful, map in the middle was a smart move. Super minimalistic but helpful.

Right from the "START" you can tell the physics have been tweaked for the better, also probably helped by the fact I don't use an FFB wheel often (funding issues ) but it just felt so much more alive! Each car felt different, when you hop in the MX5 you can feel that nimbleness but if you push too far you go sideways, the Golf was big and sturdy but cornered less generously, the RS 01 was a fiend off the line and at low revs on cold tires, but careful driving made you feel so rewarded by its performance. You really have to put in work in this game, I had a smile on my face even when I spun out.

(leaving out sounds since we've touched upon that many a time here, me included, and I'm tired lol)

Gripes right now would really only be a lack of damage, but Kaz answered that question in the most hilarious way that also confirmed it. Next gripe I saw was some weird aliasing and some strange graphical flashing in places, like on fences and edges of vehicles. Though from what I saw those famous jaggies seem to be mostly gone? Not sure about that one. Final gripe was a weird bug that happened when moving back and forth through menus too fast but that's clearly a beta thing so whatever.

Final impressions are this is a game for those who love the racing and the thrill, it was genuinely so fun and I've been missing that for a while. Though I love car collection this is still a day one for me.

Last thing; towards the end of the event I spent a good 45 minutes, if not more, sitting in a rig with the headphones on just playing the game. So chill and so fun, can't even explain to you guys. I only used three cars and two tracks in that whole time at the end (I used more earlier though) and there were at least 15 cars to choose from, I didn't feel like I had no choice at all. My friend who wanted to go home before the Kaz presentation (not letting that happen ) spent around 30 odd minutes practising on Brands Hatch with just the RS 01.The 137 car thing is nothing to worry about when you start playing, seriously. I wasn't even looking at the time and I was so engrossed that I didn't realise it was time to go until someone came around and told us to have a final race.

I want to go back :banghead:

I just hope they can patch in dynamic weather like Driveclub did post-launch.

This will definitely be a wait and see game for me. The impressions are all over the place so it's difficult to know who to trust.

This is the most confusing product unveiling ever. Trailer and live stream almost looks like this thing isn't going to impress. But then hands on impressions are hyping me up. Just please make it good Kaz.

You can't have neo specific features so if they can't provide four player local on the base model then neo doesn't get it.
Actually no. If base model has 2 player local splitscreen, the neo can have 4 player local splitscreen (that was actually a specific scenario given in the documentation to show what IS allowed). Now if the game didn't have any sort of splitscreen whatsoever in the base model, then the neo can't have a splitscreen mode.

So you could stretch that definition to if the base model has weather options, the neo could have dynamic weather options. Though honestly, I wouldn't expect them to put this in. They have enough work to do already on the actual game itself rather than desigining advanced features for the neo version.

the GT's playlist always had a small acid jazz flavor that is found in the final game, I do not doubt. <3

what is certain is that the more I look at videos and screens to GT sport and the more I want to play ^^

Best thing about Sony is the don't push things on studios they trust, for all this might no have delivered we are still talking about a studio that's earned Sonys trust due to previous monster sales.

Phenomenal lighting, and the models and car shader detail is absolutely top draw....they look so grounded in the scene...Glitchy in parts with shadows on trees popping into view mind...I'm starting to warm to the game after looking at the info coming out. No realtime weather is no biggie, TOD will no doubt be godly...and I'm hopeful that in 6 months it will of had a fair amount of polish...I'd like to see the tracks/track sides dirtied up...scrape marks, run down parts of the tarmac etc etc...The whole gui style and visual looks fantastic so seems they're on a winner in that respect...

Looks like GTS is recovering slightly after the disappointment of the initial presentation. Some of the subsequent reports and videos give glimmers of hope, but I'd be a lot happier if this stage of development was shown six months ago - there's one hell of a lot of work needed before November, especially if PD need three months to produce the master.

Anyway, signs are more encouraging than they were a couple of days ago.

Still no full transcript/video of the Q&A?

Still no thread about the beta cancellation?

GT5 had RUF iirc. With Forza 6 having actual Porsches you would think PD would negotiate with EA to have them in GTS. Especially in a racing centric game.

Polyphony have said in the past that they aren't going to give special treatment to certain car manufacturers because of deals they may have in place. You could already see that by how they handled Lamborghini and Ferrari through the first four entries. They waited until the brands were available for everyone to use and where you didn't have to make weird deals with other companies in order to use them.

Kaz confirmed the cars are tessellated. Makes sense the majority of GT6 400 premiums had to be dropped, I think there were less than 100 premiums that supported tessellation.

http://game.watch.impress.co.jp/docs/interview/20160521_758519.html

Poor google translation

- Super-premium car is roughly What polygon?

Yamauchi said: if there is a place you have not recently much aware of that the number of polygons count, because, I think I do not say I what polygon because they are to be tessellated to adaptive.

Wait, so not all premium cars in GT6 used tessellation? And those premium cars will be scrapped

So we've got, standards, premium, premium tessellated?

Edit: sorry for double post, I thought I was editing the first one.

Shit. I stand corrected. Those are some really positive impressions about Gran Turismo Sport. Save for the fact every single one of those quotes are from the initial impressions of GT6. It's the honeymoon phase all over again, but we know how all this hyperbole panned out once people played it for a few dozen hours. Not drinking the pre release hype kool aid ever again. This is literally the same shit we have heard before.

You two are changing your tune little by little, its amusing. And why so hung up on the beta? You'll be able to let people try the game before you buy it when it comes out.

Some other impressions:

"... the physics behind car and track are powerfully realistic. Developers worked on a new suspension model and refined the aerodynamic model to boot. The result, at least in our ten minutes at the helm, is remarkably true to life; satisfying to get right, and sometimes quite frustrating during the hard bits."

"I also noticed a slightly more gritty engine sound than what I have heard in previous builds. A Sony representative confirmed that several of the cars were equipped with updated audio."

"Once the races started, though, it was immediately clear that there have been significant changes to the artificial intelligence of the other drivers, as confirmed by U.S. Gran Turismo producer Taku Imasaki."

"This gave the racing a different and more challenging feel. I felt like I would need to push and drive defensively if I wanted to get ahead and win."

"Polyphony Digital are notoriously anal-retentive about these things, so it is no surprise that the engines sound beautiful (and different, depending on the car) and the tracks look more beautiful than ever."

"All of that, of course, is pointless if it doesn’t drive well, but this is Gran Turismo, so no worries, it drives like a dream.

"Front-wheel-drive cars drive differently than rear-wheel drive, 4WD have better handling but are heavier, turbos perform differently than naturally aspirated engines, etc. Gran Turismo has always done this stuff well, so this is not a surprise. But everything is just that much better. The blades of grass are more subtle, the reflection of the car in front of you is a little more clear."

Yeah on GT6 only some of the new cars had tessellation (and none of the GT5 premiums had it). It seems like they'll be throwing out everything that wasn't tessellated.

Let's pray that this new beginning will be the end of the duplicates and that there'll be no more 25 miatas or 50 skylines.

What does this mean exactly?

That several of the cars have updated audio and the majority don't and will be so for final release?
That several of the cars have updated audio for now and the rest are placeholders?

The confusion hurts....

Been at work, is there a link to confirmation of dynamic TOD?

No dynamic weather doesn't bother me. The quality of dynamic weather in pCars isn't that great, and it looked awful in GT5&6 with no "wetness" to anything, especially dry looking asphalt.

Glad to hear there's torque steer. Was pretty much missing in GT6.

No, but there's 24hr Nurburgring which suggests it has to have
