Stellaris |OT| Imperium Universalis

I have not had time to follow this game for the last two weeks so now that it is out I would like to know what GAF thinks. The metacritic score is about 80% but Steam reviews are generally positive.

1. Is the game good to go or wait for patches? (Paradox!)

2. Is the game as good as we all hoped?

3. Anything else I should know?

I'm finally starting my game. Any particular recommendations for starting weapons and FTL methods for a new player?

Starting weapon is not very important unless you want to minmax. Warp is the simplest FTL, hyperlane is probably the most strategically interesting, Wormhole is very good and really it's not that hard to cope with even though it says "for advanced players". Wormhole stations are cheap and can be built in neutral territory. Any will be fine, maybe warp for first game but imo you'd be fine with anything. Warp is kinda weak, I'd go hyperlane or wormhole personally.

3. Anything else I should know?

1. If you're busy with other games, wait for a few updates to fix some of the wonkiness. It's worth playing even though it has design flaws.

2. No, but it is good.

3. Friendship is mandatory

The game is good, but it definitely does need some updates. For instance, early game is insanely fun, while mid/late it starts to get really bogged down. A lot of issues stem from diplomacy. I'm about 30 hours into it now, I'm glad I bought it though because I'm enjoying it and it's only going to get better.

1.It's fun until mid game then you really begin to notice performance issues, annoying AI and limitations of some of the game design. It needs patches for performance and the AI really needs some work.

2.It's good with potential to be very good. I'm enjoying it even with the above issues, but it does feel incomplete at this stage.

3.There are other options that offer a more complete experience in the 4x market if you've never dipped your toes in before.

First game...I guess Im in late game..I have vasseled 1/3 to 1/2 the map.

The vassel mechanics seem completely broken..its to easy to take over an entire empire and then have their doom stack follow you around to vassel the next empire.

It got boring real quick...game seems pointless after you realise noone on the map can stop your doomstack.

If you're at war with an empire, can't you jump into their territory if the empires between us don't have open borders to me? I tells me that there's no route to the selected system I'm trying to warp to.

It's frustrating as shit as it's putting me in a position where I can't win no matter what

No, as far as I know, you cant cross through non-open territory without a diplomatic agreement (having open borders or being allies). It's really annoying, and often results in you getting boxed in later in the game. However, they are planning on changing borders to open by default in the second big patch, so that'll hopefully reduce the frequency of that issue.

I'm fine with them being closed, just let me warp through them to the other side...

Pretty much have to start this game over then though. Litterally unwinnable at this point because of what you describe

When it comes to territorial access, they should learn from EU4, where people will give military access sooner when their rivals are fighting each other.

1.) It's okay, but I would wait for patches and some expansions

2.) Not the base game, but I have faith it will be good in the future

3.) HoI4 is releasing next month, it will probably have a better base game!

OK, thanks for the impressions guys.

Seems like a plan to hold off for now and wait for it to bake all the way through.

Ehh, I mean I have some issues, but I re-rolled with a different map (elliptical I think) and the enjoyment improved ten fold due to instant conflicts and issues with competing with very close empires going for the same space.

Honestly I love it, I would jump in now and get a game in hand, then if you're a little tired just wait for some patches to roll in and pick it up again.

Also question, is there a map setting to see Federations/Alliances instead of just independent civs?

Eh there's enough bugs and mechanics problems I think it's worth it to wait for the may patch at least- I know a lot of people (who weren't around for pre-CK2 paradox) who got kind of soured of Stellaris as it is now, and if I knew it was like this I'd probably have waited too.

I also think that the economy being reduced to energy makes sense to extremely state-focused economies but fails to capture the potential for 'capitalism in space.' There should be a better luxury system and a trading and economy system. Pretty much all of the resources (except for pets?) are strategic; there should be exotic spices, ores, foods, chemicals, etc that can be traded. Different governments would have different attitudes towards trade and markets but clearly some sort of system would help that part of role-playing.

As to how to fit it into the simulation...it could play into growth, migration, and happiness with or without having a "money" resource. You could then settle along trade routes or at resource sources to encourage quicker planet growth instead of a more planned forced resettlement approach, which makes sense for the more statist economies. Perhaps ethics could also tie into how powerful a sway luxuries and money have over your population's happiness to make the more statist approach a more steady and true while the more free-wheeling approach has more of an opportunity for growth/production explosion as well as implosion?!

...

Also, I'd hope for luxuries in a way not like, say, Civ III where they are just like strategic resources, but rather something more like "Civ B makes really good glassware, we like/don't like it and want it!"

So I have a primitive civilization that is controlling mining stations in my territory now. How is this possible? Anyone ran into this?

Bit annoyed because they are taking like 20 mineral mining from me with this.

The stations are "neutral". They send their production to whoever's borders they're in.

Conquer the primitives?

Had the same issue. Annoying as hell, because the system would produce 18 minerals a turn.

And the primitives' homeworld is on the other side of the galaxy.

The mining stations are within my borders. The primitives homeworld is also within my borders. But there is a research station of someone else orbiting because it switched a few times since it is right on the border of me and another empire.

It's strange. These guys are in the Bronze Age and getting their bronze from space it seems.

I think there's some kind of bug with primitives and in-system ships/stations being given to them. I've seen some primitives with three distinct monstrous aliens under their control, sitting idle in the system (all neutral). Very weird stuff.

No idea what causes it.

Good ideas, I agree with a lot of this.

A CK2/Civ5: Brave New World-inspired trade system would breathe a lot of life into the galaxy. Imagine, trade ships travelling between worlds, disupted by pirates, monsters, or wars; or empires, large and small, influencing galactic trade in their own way, all while the citizens living in these various empires went on with their lives. It would reflect the citizens within these mighty empires just doing what they can to get along.

As far as trade resources, I think a Civ5-esque luxury resource system would be good on top of the current strategic resource system. Except these ones would be revealed by default and would give happiness bonuses to empires trading in them (with bonuses depending on quantity). There would be several types, to give areas of the galaxy certain specialties. And, of course, there will be worthwhile economic bonuses for cornering the market.

With trade routes and resources as an actual thing in the map, they could be disrupted by war--say one month's disruption when there's combat in the system. It would lead to CK2/Civ5-esque situations where there are wars of intervention to improve trade control, or provide good options to hamstring large empires (crippling their economy by targetting a major trade route). At the very least, it would be a reason to interact with one's neighbours.

Other random trade thoughts:
  • It would give some more room for interesting events. Market fluctuations improving/devaluing one's trade goods. Space pirates springing up. A mass exhaustion/discovery of some luxuries. An unexpected collapse in a trade route's viability. Stuff that shakes up the galactic economy and drives empires to tighten their grasp on trade.
  • I think it'd be best to tie trade manipulation to governors rather than making a new classification... but perhaps its necessary thinking of their regular traits. They could be sent to improve/manipulate a specific route, as in CK2/EU4. This would let tiny empires that control large amounts of trade rake in the credits and give room for mercenary army forces or something.
  • Importantly, trade manipulation would lead to situations where empires aren't constantly maxed out on energy credits, for one reason or another. It should be as useful in peace as it is in war. Perhaps excess credits could be spent to gain more luxuries or just get drained by an empire's poor trade practices. It has to go somewhere, right?
  • Tying trade into happiness as well as energy credits will further emphasize the importance of both mechanics, which feel kinda flat to me right now.

ok, so something just invaded the galaxy into a civiliation that is just next to mine.

Issue 1: They recently declared war on me, and lost as I reduced their fleet into nothing as my many vassals gave me their fleets for help. They hate me and I can't declare war on them to gain access to their space, and I can't get them to cooperate to help beat back whatever is invading them and the galaxy as a whole.

Issue 2: Their fleet was reduced to ash and they won't stand a chance, meaning whatever is invading us is about to get a major foothold on my doorstep

halp

also random question, how many years is the average game? I'm like 150 years in and only have like 1/8th of the map.

You can actually gain control of those, if you bring the owner species to space. Happened to me, much to my surprise. From what I recall, I got control of a couple of void clouds and a couple of crystals.

Is it the extra-dimensional guys that are invading??

If you're talking about the swarm, that event is pretty fucked at the moment, enough that you can't actually solve the situation. It lead me to give up my first game until they put out a patch.

Give it a bit, they'll probably be willing to offer military access soonish.

Try trading for star charts?

Aww, there's no actual achievement for destroying the Prethoryn, the achievement is for getting the Queen :(

Oh well, at least my vassal got all their land back.

The latest hotfix fixed the Prethoryn bug.

Huh so the scourge kinda... stopped scourging

They have like half an the empire of where they invaded, but there is one system that has been completely surrounded for the last decade and still hasn't been consumed, and there has been little to no expansion for years now.

Disappointing! (Maybe it's because I have the game on medium difficulty?)

Also another question, how does one figure out what species is on what colony ship, I can't seem to find a way and I'm getting a little confused and basically playing a guessing game.

I feel like the early to early-mid game in Stellaris really drags, especially after you've seen all the flavor text for anomalies.

The early tech takes way too long to research, imo. I guess it makes sense that they don't want someone to potentially grab potentially good tech too early (like someone rolling shields in their starting set), but it just feels punishing considering the research options are random.

It's easier to just click colonize on the planet you want and then select the colony ship in the menu that opens. You'll see who are in all the different ships then.

Oh dear god my entire galactic sector just erupted in a massive war

I have like four different civs in a single Federation declare war on me (because on of them was an old rival that I've gone to war with in the past).

Then my first civilization that I went to war with just declared war on a vassal that was once their home world... and now I'm at war with them. only issue is my fleet is busy dealing with an entire Federation wanting to fuck my shit up so an entire part of my civ. is completely unprotected.

oh and I was in the middle of fighting back and getting rid of the scourge, but I mean who cares about a galactic eating species amiright?

They smell an opening and are hoping to win.

I wish I had SOME control of my vassals fleets, like telling them "No stupid stop following me, defend my northern part of my civilization!"

but alas I can not

Edit 1: Scourge still not scourging, guess they got tired and settled down or something.

Edit 2: ok I think I need to stop opening my mouth because I just got a 20k scourge visit in my rim system

Edit 3: ok now one of my very old vassals is starting to throw shade in my direction, pls stop hating me

Like how hard would it be to have a screen where you can set allied fleets to follow specific fleets you own or set them to AI control? In other Paradox games, one of the best things about allies is not having to micromanage every aspect of the war (especially when its obvious your alliance will win).

Man it's pretty much impossible to get any type of allience or federation together with xenophobe trait. Mainly because anyone who I grant independence too also has the xenophobe trait which makes them hate me even faster

Considering I have like 4 alien species integrated after 200+ years, you would think the main ethos of my civ would be able to change to something a bit more tolerant?

Rend. Slaughter. Devour your enemies. There is no other way to survive. You cannot escape your hunger.

You know what you must do.

I think it's fixed now. I was able to defeat them yesterday night. (or at least, I don't see any territory.)

This game needs one major thing

a timeline UI that shows all the major events like wars, contacts, population growth, army growth.

oh man that would make me so happy to see me progress in charts and graphs!

I'm loving the game so far but I have some issues.

I colonised a world with pre-sentients on it and had the option to be them in camps. I chose that option and it put a tile blocker on one tile with the pre-sentients in a camp but there are still a lot of them on other tiles and they grow so I can't use most of the planet. I thought it would put them all in camps.

Speaking of pre-sentients, how does uplifting work? I have the tech and I try to uplift a species by changing the planet preference and adding a trait and the project starts but I always get a message saying it failed when it finishes. I've tried just changing the planet preference and not adding any traits and it still fails. I've tried multiple times with multiple pre-sentients and they always fail, what am I doing wrong?

I have a planet that got occupied by something already on the planet, is it possible for me to bombard it? When I move my fleet there it just orbits it and attacking with all the fortifications up is tough.

The planet limits kind of annoying because I have a system with 3 habitable planets and that takes up 3/5 of my limit. Wish the limit was for solar systems and not planets.

I'm scared to go to war with my neighbours because I've not got the point defense tech yet so any missile or torpedo empire would wreck me. Could I use fighters to protect against missiles and torpedoes?

I really need to figure out how to mod in random events. The anomalies are nice but quite limited at mid-game. Need more and I got a billion ideas for it.
