What exactly was basic about it? It mechanically looked like the TLG that people have been wanting since it was first revealed. And it's not like there are any other games like it. And as far as the visuals go, maybe i'm missing what's so bad or disappointing about this
But each episode is apparently as big as a game in the XIII trilogy, and they were all big games. So how's that not epic?
It was either a Kickstarter or we never get it. I think anyone that ever wanted Shenmue 3 to happen is more than happy that it was Kickstarted.
I'm not commenting on the visuals in TLG, just the basic gameplay that was shown. It's not disappointing as such, I don't have expect them to show the most intricate parts of the game in an early trailer, but it certainly leaves enough question marks not to be showered with undue praise just for existing. Hopefully the prolonged development hasn't impacted substantially on the quality of the final game and, as per my final comment, a 2016 release date WOULD be hype-inducing for me.
Turning one plot into a series of games isn't unusual in this day and age, but the idea of playing FFVII part 1, getting to the ending, and then having to wait on part 2 releasing at some point in the future doesn't exactly appeal to me.
I'm sure I won't be alone in waiting until all the parts are released before playing the finished game, which means I'll be waiting until 2020 (or whatever) anyway.
Nothing wrong with a Shenmue III Kickstarter in itself, but the announcement on the Sony stage caused a lot of confusion as to what was actually happening with the game and what Sony's involvement was.
I'm a big Shenmue fan and stuck with the threads until things were cleared up days later and I was happy to back the project at the $300 tier, but it's really hard to say how many people didn't back the project at all because they thought it was PS4 only, or backed at a lower level (over a third backed at $29 for a digital copy) because they figured Sony would make up the difference.
Conversely the PS4 was riding high, and around three times as many people backed for PS4 physical as PC physical. That could mean that using the Sony stage was a success, or that it limited the appeal outside of PS4 owners.
The Kickstarter broke records, and it's impossible to say if it reached its full potential or not. Either way, the messaging on the night wasn't as clear as it could have been.
Again, on the night they hype was a glorious thing, but to still be drinking that same Kool-aid a year later is somewhat silly.
100% this. Can't for the life of me understand why people are trying to retcon Sony's conference as a monkey's paw...
Pessimism in video game communities can go to hell. It's a fucking cancer on this industry.
I don't need to retcon anything.
Since E3 2015 I think I've played MGSV, GTAV, Battlefront and The Division on my PS4. Most of my PS4-owning friends have only bothered with GTAV and Battlefront.
Sony gave me very little to actually buy in the last year. Should I be thanking them for sparing my wallet?
