People were expecting The Last Guardian to be a completely different game it feels like. Or rather, to be a huge graphical leap above its original showing, which wasn't even running at a decent frame rate without speeding it up. The real star of that game is the companion's AI. That is truly impressive stuff.

Man I'm quite jealous shenmue 3,ffvii, the last guardian, is alive, crash rumors alot of dreams man but...where is ape escape 4!!

I would love even if the original game got the remaster treatment like Ratchet & Clank did for $40.

Well overdue for a new Ape Escape though.

But that means it will never get there (like GTA or Bioshock eventually did).

If they are unhappy with Activision's quality output, they can work with EA (again), Take 2, Square Enix/Eidos, Capcom, or a plethora of other developers/publishers. Sucker Punch is not the only available option to create and develop a quality spiderman game. Far from it, actually.

I think you're missing the point a bit. Sucker Punch isn't the only option - as I stressed in my post, I don't think they're even making Spider-Man - but I think it's much more logical option than people suggest.

Sony/Sucker Punch could easily pitch a Spider-Man game based upon the blueprints of inFAMOUS and get it green-lit in my opinion. They have the pedigree, the resources, and the track record to make it happen. More to the point, Sony has the marketing grunt to make it a very agreeable deal for Disney - Spider-Man would feature front and centre in all PlayStation marketing guaranteed.

Despite what you say, if Disney wants a quality Spider-Man game, then there aren't as many good options as you seem to allude. Who's going to make it for Capcom? Who's going to make it for Take-Two? Who's going to make it for EA?

I don't think Sony can match last years E3 hype

I'm hoping I'm wrong though

I'm having a hard to believing that as well, but i'm ready to be surprised.
Poor Gopher is going to be attacked by everyone on Gaf if the conference doesn't live up to the hype.

I agree it will be hard to top FF7 remake, Shenmue 3, The Last Guardian, and Horizon.

I think Sony is riding on the Crash reboot they've been leaking for months now.

With Uncharted 4 out of the way and No Man Sky releasing next week that's two huge games launching that they can't hyped up anymore.

So hopefully there is some big sucker punch game or Japanese game coming out.

After reading some comments here I want that Spidey game from SP so bad right now

This could be super huge if done right. In SP we (must) trust

Realistically speaking, how can it match what happened last E3? That was one where they were announcing games that people either thought were dead or simply would never happen. How many of those are left? Half Life 3/Episode 3? SCI taking over Crash and internally developing it? There just aren't a lot of those left outt hat have the same type of pull that FF7R, TLG, and Shenmue 3 had with fans.

I think Agent (which would possibly be exclusive) and Crash are the only two left. Well, HL3 but...yeah.

O god yes plz!!

As far as matching goes crash can match the last guardian but I can't think of anything that can stand against ffvii remake and shenmue 3 . agent maybe if it wasn't dead

What exactly was basic about it? It mechanically looked like the TLG that people have been wanting since it was first revealed. And it's not like there are any other games like it. And as far as the visuals go, maybe i'm missing what's so bad or disappointing about this

But each episode is apparently as big as a game in the XIII trilogy, and they were all big games. So how's that not epic?

It was either a Kickstarter or we never get it. I think anyone that ever wanted Shenmue 3 to happen is more than happy that it was Kickstarted.

Well said. Can't wait for all 3 of these.

I get your point, I just don't think it's as mutually beneficial as you imply, unless there's $$$ involved in the form of hats or there's more to the spiderman movie deal from last year than what is publicly known.

As for your last question, on a 100% hypothetical, I have no doubt that Irrational or the team that made Mafia II (Take 2), Capcom Internal team (I don't know their team's names, sorry), or Dice, Bioware, Visceral (EA) could make a high quality Spiderman game as good as or better than what Sucker Punch could output. Finally, any of the aforementioned publishers could outsource development to someone like Platinum, Ninja Theory, Insomniac, Respawn and they could all produce quality spidey games.

Yeah. It was not a near term conference but more a long term "dream" outlook. At that it was absolutely amazing.

Bitching about FFVII being episodic or Shenmue being a Kickstarter seems a bit petty.
100% this. Can't for the life of me understand why people are trying to retcon Sony's conference as a monkey's paw.

Shenmue III was the ultimate "fans, put your money where you mouth is" game. That's exactly what happened, and fans and non-fans alike responded overwhelmingly with "yes, we want this game". Triple record breaking crowdfunded title, and seemingly making good progress since last year. What's the downside to any of that?

I'll gladly take a Kickstarted Shenmue III headed by Yu Suzuki and being worked on by series veterans, young enthusiastic game developers, and fans, to no Shenmue III ever. With every interview and showing of the game I get more confident that they still know what makes Shenmue special and how to act on that, but also have the desire to innovate, modernise, and surprise new and old players alike. And that is fucking exciting. It's the ultimate underdog story and I can't fathom why people and the games press are so intent to tear that down.

Pessimism in video game communities can go to hell. It's a fucking cancer on this industry.

I don't see this year topping last year's Holy Shit Balls announcements, but I can see it being a better E3 for more near-term games and in terms of actual game footage. Last year was mostly trailers and teasers. This is the E3 where I believe we will see more and better gameplay demos.

On a personal level, I greatly prefer legit footage but I am absolutely satisfied with exciting announcements.

I'm not commenting on the visuals in TLG, just the basic gameplay that was shown. It's not disappointing as such, I don't have expect them to show the most intricate parts of the game in an early trailer, but it certainly leaves enough question marks not to be showered with undue praise just for existing. Hopefully the prolonged development hasn't impacted substantially on the quality of the final game and, as per my final comment, a 2016 release date WOULD be hype-inducing for me.

Turning one plot into a series of games isn't unusual in this day and age, but the idea of playing FFVII part 1, getting to the ending, and then having to wait on part 2 releasing at some point in the future doesn't exactly appeal to me.
I'm sure I won't be alone in waiting until all the parts are released before playing the finished game, which means I'll be waiting until 2020 (or whatever) anyway.

Nothing wrong with a Shenmue III Kickstarter in itself, but the announcement on the Sony stage caused a lot of confusion as to what was actually happening with the game and what Sony's involvement was.
I'm a big Shenmue fan and stuck with the threads until things were cleared up days later and I was happy to back the project at the $300 tier, but it's really hard to say how many people didn't back the project at all because they thought it was PS4 only, or backed at a lower level (over a third backed at $29 for a digital copy) because they figured Sony would make up the difference.
Conversely the PS4 was riding high, and around three times as many people backed for PS4 physical as PC physical. That could mean that using the Sony stage was a success, or that it limited the appeal outside of PS4 owners.
The Kickstarter broke records, and it's impossible to say if it reached its full potential or not. Either way, the messaging on the night wasn't as clear as it could have been.

Again, on the night they hype was a glorious thing, but to still be drinking that same Kool-aid a year later is somewhat silly.

I don't need to retcon anything.

Since E3 2015 I think I've played MGSV, GTAV, Battlefront and The Division on my PS4. Most of my PS4-owning friends have only bothered with GTAV and Battlefront.
Sony gave me very little to actually buy in the last year. Should I be thanking them for sparing my wallet?

Conferences do not become retroactively worse or better upon reflection/reality that the games end up being bad/good or had more strings attached to them than initially implied.

At that moment in time,Sony's E3 2015 was unbelievable. The outcome of that event will be judged by the product, but the excitement generated by those reveals is eternal.

We are getting the games The Last Guardian, Final Fantasy 7 Remake and Shenmue 3.

It doesn't matter about its funding history or how we receive the game. We are getting them, and that is worthy of excitement.

Stop downplaying one of the greatest E3 conferences of all time just because you have a few niggling problems about how something was presented.

Did you really expect them to explain the funding of Shenmue 3 on an E3 stage?

None of this has to do with the bulk of my post that you cut out, which had solely to do with Shenmue III and where my frustrations with pessimism in games comes from.

I don't own a PS4 and don't intend on buying one, so I don't really know what to tell you beyond that. I hope they have a good line-up for you this year?

I hope you didn't find a single Nintendo announcement of the last 5 years hype-worthy and didn't praise a single one in hindsight. Considering that, by your logic, their market failure, loss of mindshare and goodwill, the shittons of delays, games turning out trash like Starfox and constant non-existence of full release schedules nullified all of their even good announcements of the past.

I.e. these spins serve no purpose and have nothing to do with what E3 tries to achieve.

Sorry, just cut for space as I'd already written about the Shenmue Kickstarter in the rest of my post.

Thanks, I guess. I reciprocated your good wishes for your platform of choice. :)

No Man's Sky will be soon, hopefully TLG will be this year (at least before E3 2017, right?), and there looks like a better batch of third-party games on the way as more developers have left the previous gen behind. This might actually be the first year I put more time into the PS4 than my WiiU or (ageing) PC.

Interesting spin on my comments, seeing as the last few Nintendo E3s have been fairly weak shows, only for people to be pleasantly surprised when the games themselves turn out to be excellent (haven't played Star Fox yet to comment)

I am sorry everyone if I'm seeming unduly negative about last year, but the context is that I'm actually expecting this year to be better from Sony, while others were saying that was impossible after last year.

So are there any hot rumors circulating recently?

Only thing we kinda have to go on is Verendus' post from like a year ago where he pretty much outlines/hints at announcments.

If anything wait until the start of June for any sort of teasing or hints.

Guys sorry if this has already been mention in the thread but I didn't see it. Has there been any announcement of a movie screening in selected cities like they have done the last few years for their E3 conference? Watching FF7 and Shenmue get announced with a live crowd was pretty awesome.

Pretty much. Lots of things shown at E3 eventually turn out better or worse than people expect, but that doesn't really change the experience you had watching it.

I think Sony and MS are both in pretty good shape for this E3, since both consoles are years in now, which generally is around when they peak in terms of use of the hardware/ game output.

I could see people being underwhelmed just because it might be a lot of sequels/stuff we already know/heard about to some extent which, while that can be cool, in terms of conference hype doesn't quite carry the same weight as complete surprises.

Nintendo seem to be in a lose-lose situation, even if Zelda really impresses (which I think it could) everyone will just go "Yeah, but what about the NX version?"

Hopefully VR talk is kept to a minimum as that doesn't play on stage at all.

Not yet but there's still 3 weeks. I would expect something in the next few days!

My realistic expectations:

- New God Of War
- Crash Bandicoot
- TLOU2 teaser
- Kojima game teaser (with Del Toro)
- Horizon gameplay + release date in November
- TLG trailer + release date in October
- FFVII new gameplay trailer. FFVII EP 1: Midgar release date March 2017
- Hearthstone on Ps4
- Unkarted F2P
- Wipeout VR (SE comes with vomit bag)
- Shenmue 1+2 HD remaster: September
- new IP sony Bend
- Bloodborne 2 teaser trailer
- PS4k, 349$ slimmer lighter faster
- dualshock 4 Supreme.
- Sucker Punch new IP revealed. Mix of FPS, RPG, Action/Adventure
- New peripheral, big surprise of the show. Playstation Connexion.

Sony's E3 will be a shitshow. Everything they showed from last year was smoke and mirrors and we're all dumb enough for falling for it. :P

"We have a new PS4! It will be $399 and will make your PSVR work 50% better, thus your gonna get it and invest $800 in VR"

I really loved the swinging in the old PS2 spidermans. If they can nail that, this would totally be the best open world game in a long time!

Anyone expect a section comparing PS4 games to PS4 Neo versions, a la Uncharted? Seems like a logical expectation to sell the new hardware, but it'd take time away from other, newer games, and would also prove...well...frustrating for players who don't have any intention on a Neo.

Easily my most anticipated conference, just to see how they pitch that thing.

Sucker Punch nailed the Traversal aspect of Infamous: SS. If they did get their hands on the spiderman license and are making a game based off the Infamous engine ( how gorgeous would that game be! ) they no doubt could nail the pure joy of traversing the city as spiderman in the game as well.

So its an exciting prospect. Who knows if that rumor was true though

Legit, I do not expect any talk of Neo. If they aren't planning to release it until at least fall, announcing it now will crater sales. Whenever they do announce it, expect it to be releasing in stores within a week. I also wouldn't expect any significant comparisons. They will probably just say what it does and market it as a vanity item and be done.

I get your reasoning, but it also doesn't seem like Sony corporate to release a $349-$399-ish (no facts basing that up other than the rumors and speculation,) without even a few months' prior notice. PlayStation brand maybe, but I doubt their investors would be happy.

That said, I wouldn't be surprised if the leaks made them re-evaluate their marketing pitch.

See the problem is the greatest Spider-Man game ever has already been created, Spider-Man 2.

The truth in this statement. So sad how this game is a decade old and still is better than anything they've made since.

I do think a Sucker Punch Spider-Man game could surpass it though.

My personal opinion, Sony could easily surpass what they did last year.

A Sucker Punch Spider-Man game, GoW 4, Superman from WB Montreal, Dead Don't Ride, and possibly Red Dead could make this one of their best E3's ever.

I wonder what Days Gone is. For me, a new TLG trailer with 2016 release date, a great new Horizon demo that shows different aspects of the game, a GoW reveal that rivals UC4 in terms of looks and a cool demo or trailer for Dead Don't Ride (no CGI please) would probably be enough for me.

Other things I'd like:
First look at UC4 DLC (probably too early), Demon's Souls remaster and a new FROM announcement, Bloodborne 2 or otherwise.

Oh yeah, and Crash.
